Nothing about this album sounds awful, but it's all serving anonymous poolside playlist? When you think about the songs that popped on her last album like "NRO" and "HIH" for instance, they had some flavor/oomph. Everything I've heard from this lacks any kind of soul or personality. How invested was she with this album?
I'm not gonna completely knock a faceless/nameless bop, I use them all the time. But it feels like Katy is barely present, a song by committee situation. And it becomes even more glaring when you look at the crop of pop girls that have been taking over the past decade. At the very least, they have strong points of view as song-writers/singers/sonic palette/branding. It just makes it more and more apparent why she cratered so badly commercially.

I think she's conscious of what works for her musically and what doesn't. Her brand was built upon the exact opposite of depths. With this era the intention is to do what she's supposed to be good at: silly, mindless, "big" pop records.

That new song she's planning to release on 9/6 better be something exciting that can save the album. If they are releasing snippets like the one for Nirvana to supposedly attract people, I don't want to know what the rest of the album sounds like.

I don't know why anyone would expect that at this point. Can't imagine they ever had a strategy of releasing basic shit and holding onto the one album gem for a fifth promo single pre-album release.

Right?! How was this whole project even approved by the label to start with!

Listening to the new Sabrina Carpenter album, I can't help but think that Katy should have released something like this instead of a bunch of C+ level fist pump bops.

She's surrounded by too many Yes Men and stuck in 2012 to realize the producers from Espresso should have just produced 90% of this album

I was hopping online before bed to say much the same thing. I finally gave Sabrina's album a spin and "Juno" sounded like a KP bop if Katy actually got that explicit.

Just sliding in here to say she should more songs like "Pendulum". Everything about it to me is just perfect, especially the way the chorus is performed.

There’s some really good songs on there. I really believe that because Katy’s attempt at experimenting and trying something different backfired, she’s afraid to really experiment again. So she’s sticking to the safe route that she’s familiar with. Obviously I don’t know if that’s true but we know that the response to that era really affected her mental health.

"Roulette" is underrated and sounds wonderful live. So is "Déjà Vu".

Maybe 143 is her MDNA.

Nah. Nothing on 143 sounds even half as adventurous as MDNA.

Nah. Nothing on 143 sounds even half as adventurous as MDNA. Literally. "Gang Bang" was right there.😂

I love how everyone keeps pointing to music from her last two albums as things she should be doing. Except... the GP let those albums "flop." So, I don't blame her for not trying to repeat the same type of music. However, I agree the stuff she's been releasing just isn't it either.

Well I mean in the sense that everyone thinks Madonna “phoned it in” with regards to MDNA. I personally like the album. But maybe Katy was so busy with Idol that the 8 writers per song basically did all the work and Katy just “phoned in” her part. Just a theory. Maybe she wasn’t that involved.

I understand leaving all the work to producers and writers, but at the end of the day isn't her name/reputation at stake? She could've stopped the project or tell her people to fix this or that. The fact that she was so sure about it all and nobody said anything about the two songs they chose to promote the album is very telling. Are they THAT disconnected from music today. Anybody in the industry I think could've said the final product was not good. And the label?? Did they give her full green light with no quality control at all? I can't imagine a label releasing marketing money without knowing if the product is good.

Things are dire when people are now ret-conning Witness into an unsung gem lol. That album has (pretty rightfully) been dragged through the mud for years. No way should she return to something like that. Prism really was the peak. A bit more polished and a bit more artistic overall than TD, with just as many smash hits (too many of which unfortunately were ignored). Kill This Is How We Do with fire and it’s a pretty perfect pop album.

Witness was fine, but it was the first time Capitol did not seem to exercise much quality control. If they had cut the weakest songs and made it a 12-13 track album, it would've been solid. I'm not sure that much of it was single-worthy with where pop music was in 2017.

I can't imagine a label releasing marketing money without knowing if the product is good. Some artists just show up, record the chosen songs, stamp their name on it and move on. It isn’t implausible that Katy could have done that. I’d personally be surprised but I haven’t been super tuned into promo or interviews or her social media or anything to really guage that.

^ That's so good! Amazing job Dylan! Part of Me x California Gurls is my favorite part I think, they go really well together. Also, I don't think I'll ever get enough of Dark Horse instrumental, they definitely put something in that song.

"California Gurls" is only 2 million plays away from hitting 1 billion streams on YouTube/YT Music.
It will be Katy's 11th song in the 1 billion club.
