There’s no reason to expect anything other than abysmal sales for her. Katy was never ever an album seller, even when she was smashing singles records. Now it’s 2024 and this has a slew of flops proceeding it with all of her negative press to boot. No one should be expecting anything other than unmitigated disaster for sales and be pleasantly surprised if it manages to avoid that territory.

I mean, it is embarrassing if she doesn't outsell Paris Hilton, but also why is Paris Hilton selling that much?!?!? lol Those are kind of awesome numbers for not even having a single out there or a musical career. I was shocked, like...how ??? She basically sold more pure copies (59.5k?) in two weeks than Dua's Radical Optimism (58k). Is this a joke? Next week's drop will be interesting.

Where would you rank "Im His"? I’d put it in the top half of the album. Also, that song grew on me a lot over the weekend after hearing out at the bar. It sounds really good in the context of the album.

Thanks. 143 is definitely better than Witness but I’d rank Smile higher because this album doesn’t have any songs on the same level as NRO or HIH. I’m gonna give my first listen ranking and thoughts in my next post. I just gotta put it together when I get the chance.

This ranking is based off of my first listen at the pre-release party. So this was heard through a speaker at a record store and some people were talking in the background too.
1. Gorgeous - This felt like an obvious single choice to me but I’m sure some will disagree with me. Trap pop-ish production with a heavy bass. Kim is featured in the chorus and has a verse which she sounds great on. I could hear this fitting in on a Kim album. 2. Wonder - It’s rare for me to love a Katy album closer but this one hit me on first listen. The song starts and ends with a little girl; I can’t tell if it’s Daisy on the track or not but she does shout out Daisy in the song. Lyrically, the song is very reflective. 3. All The Love - This song reminds me of Teary Eyes but happier. I love the lyrics in this one. 4. Artificial - The production goes hard af on this one. JID has a good verse. 5. I’m His, He’s Mine - This one grew on me a lot over the weekend. I love the sample and the music video elevated the song for me. 6. Gimme Gimme - This sounds kinda TikTok ready and I can see why people want it as a single. Another trap pop production. Savage opens the song and has a second verse. 7. Nirvana - Club ready song with a decent drop. There is one part where you think there’s a drop but it leaves ya with blue balls 8. Lifetimes - I still like this one even though it sounds like a lesser version of WOA. This is another one that works well in the context of the album. 9. Crush - A fun dance pop song but felt kinda filler to me on first listen. I can see certain KatyCats liking this. 10. Woman’s World - One of the weakest songs on the album. Burned on me quickly and it never should’ve been the lead single. 11. Truth - The slowest song on the album and the closest we get to a mid tempo. This felt like a leftover from Witness both lyrically and sonically.
I enjoyed this album on first listen but I want to listen to it with headphones and no one around so I can get a real feel for the album. I am certain there are people who will disagree with my opinions on this album but these were my initial impressions. I’d rank this close to Smile in an album ranking but Smile (imo, on first listen) is a slightly stronger album with higher highs. 143 still has some good songs and is a good offering by Katy.

It's very midtempo in the first half, and very dance heavy on the second half, with another mid tempo sprinkled in. As wjr15 mentioned, there are definitely no NRO or HIH, but there are definitely memorable, catchy productions on the first listen. Very positive, less sexual themes. Also, it's only 33 minutes, a very easy listen. My ranking 1st listen: 1.I'm His He's Mine 2.Gorgeous 3.Crush 4.Lifetimes 5.Artifical 6.Wonder 7.Gimmie Gimmie 8.All The Love 9.Nirvanna 10.Truth 11.Womans World

Gorgeous is my favorite clip we have heard so I'm glad to hear other people also think it is a standout. The only part of the song that I could see people not liking is when Katy stretches out the word ‘gorgeous’ in the chorus. Other than that, I think it would make a great single. But I might be biased because it’s my favorite song on the album (as of now).

I will say that my one main criticism is that the album is too short which leads to some songs feeling incomplete. ‘Gimme Gimme’ and ‘Lifetimes’ are probably the biggest offenders of this. Neither are bad songs but both could’ve been elevated with a proper bridge.

"Truth" should've been sequenced in the first half, then it would've been a perfect flow.

If IHHM is considered in the top half of this album, then...whew, I am even more scared. Oh well...the wait is almost over.

Now that the whole album's out there, time to officially drop it in the bin. None of the Luke tracks actually get there. Max Stargate/Cirkut tried with 'Wonder' but the dead weight of the rest of the album (plus an unnecessary Daisy Dove cameo) even manage to drag that one down.

Max tried with 'Wonder' but the dead weight of the rest of the album (plus an unnecessary Daisy Dove cameo) even manage to drag that one down. Can you provide more details on each song, like Billy and Wave did? If you can't, no worries! While I feel like every album except Smile was weighed down by filler, I am hoping to connect with at least most of the songs I haven't heard yet. Were there any songs you actually enjoyed? Are all of Luke's productions as dull and lifeless as the singles that have been released? I'm starting to come around to Lifetimes, as repetitive as it is. I think it's probably the best of the 3. Originally, I thought that dubious honor went to IHHM but I can't get over the dragging tempo. Gypsy Woman was so propulsive, so I don't know why Luke/his hired hands did what they did. I'm definitely going to listen to clips tonight. I still have not pulled the trigger, but leaning towards the CD, especially because at least I will be able to upload it to my phone vs. the vinyl. Plus, now I can get the CD for under a dollar from Amazon.

For the most part, the songs felt so aggressively generic and basic (much like 'Woman's World') that while nothing is like... legitimately terrible and unlistenable, they're just so bland and uninteresting that it makes them suck. There could've been something there in 'Artificial' but Puke is not the producer to really take that sound to an interesting place. I feel like the right three songs were picked as singles so far, and maaaaaybe I could go with 'Lifetimes' as the best of a bad bunch. Godspeed to anyone clamouring for a 'Gimme Gimme' single release because that's probably the worst song here.
Daisy on 'Wonder' was un-needed, and given she's whatever-age-under-5 (sorry I don't remember what year she was born) the auto-tuned to hell cameo just sounds awful. (EDIT: Also I'd forgotten the Kim Petras leftover was Max's sole credit on the album, 'Wonder' was Stargate & Cirkut. Either way, they couldn't overcome the aggressive average-ness of the rest of the album).

This starts awful, then all of a sudden gets really good. The roll out could have been so much better without Woman's World being the lead. There was so much hype for this and there are some certified bops on here. She also teased some of the worst songs
Best Songs All The Love The production reminds me of Owl City. So good! Easily the best production on the album. I wish the whole album was like this. PLEASE MAKE THIS A SINGLE KATY! Nirvana Maybe this is tied with All The Love for the best production. However, wjr15 is right. You expect this to explode and then it.. doesn't. Truth Weak chorus lyrics but omg this is a bop!!
Good Songs Artifical Meh lyrics for how cool the production is. Like a demonic version of Dark Horse meets E.T. with a sprinkle of The Hills, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing. JID, who I don't care for, fits very well. As with most songs on here, ends out of nowhere Wonder Daisy sounds fine for the most part, and Katy tried hard to go for an anthem here. Really great album closer, and I think it would have worked really well as a lead. I love the guitar so much. I wish there were more songs like this on the album. This is going to sound amazing live Crush Those chorus vocals are damn annoying, but the pre-choruses and second verse are really good. The chorus instrumental is so weak. I expected it to sound more like Catch My Breath given how it sounded when sung live, but it didn't in the final version I'm His He's Mine One of the best on the album overall I think, should have been the lead. However, I have little interest to listen again
Meh Woman's World I've already shared my thoughts. I see why they want it as the lead as it's the most Katy sounding song, but the lyrics and lack of effort with the instrumental make it suck (even if I prefer it to now than when it came out) Gimme Gimme - way too slow and too short. Lyrically it's okay but the production is too boring. No different in the instrumental between the chorus or verses, bar a little sprinkle sound in the pre-chorus. It just ends with no payoff at any point
Awful Gorgeous Starts interesting and then it just.. mess lol. The elongated "gorgeous" is ew and the synth thing is awful. Vaguely reminds me of The Weeknd's False Alarm in how weird it is. Again, very little difference in the production between the verses and chorus. Kim just annoys me on this (and in general), although her vocals are better than Katy's

Ok, so on first listen, I think the main issue with the album is that it's soulless: a lot of flash, pomp, and circumstance with no heart. That and I feel like they're behind the curve on a lot of the production elements here. I feel like a lot of this material would've popped off 10 years ago, but now seems a bit empty and dated. Like, I could easily hear "Neon Lights" by Demi Lavato in this tracklisting perfectly. I think one of the songs capture the gist of 143 perfectly: "Artificial", in that it's trying to be something it isn't. The strongest material we've got here is "Gorgeous" 🤩 and maybe "I'm His, He's Mine". There are a few others that are good melodically ("Nirvana", "Crush", "All The Love"), but the production is just so dated I can't get into it. With "Gimme Gimme" you can tell 21 Savage just wanted a check and threw on whatever bs he could come up with in 5 minutes. 143 would've been HUGE....in 2010! Yeah, the reviews aren't going to be kind with this. Ugh.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a good critic review of any of her albums, so these won’t phase me. Used to it by now.
