Old hits that would’ve been huge on Tik Tok…

Of course this is all imagination but what old hits do you think would’ve worked well on Tik Tok if it was around?

For example “Macarena” would be one that comes to the top of my head. It’s interesting because when it was Initially released in it’s original form the song did not take off. In fact it was pretty much dead and over with. It was not until several month later when the “Bayside Boys Remix” was issued that the song resurfaced and stormed up the charts, becoming a pop cultural phenomenon. This is kind of a storybook example of how a Tik Tok song would go viral (an unconventional chart run fueled by a remix dance craze), but more amazing is that this was all accomplished without social media.

Another dance number that comes to mind is "Electric Boogie", or the Electric Slide song as popularized by Marcia Griffiths. She recorded it in 1983 and it charted in a remixed form in 1989-90, but only reached #51 on the Hot 100 (it got a LOT of DC-area airplay, ranking high on the playlists of WAVA and Q107, the two local CHR's at the time.) It would probably be much bigger today with Tik Tok, as well as with You Tube videos showing people how to do the dance.

Funnily enough, I’ve been listening through some Year-End hits from the 2000s for Groovy’s upcoming polls, and I had this same thought when listening to So Fresh So Clean by OutKast. The chorus is a single four-bar melody looped several times, and plays five times in total (including at the beginning and end of the song). The production also has a very “vibey” feel to it, at least by early 2000s standards. And based on the content of being cooler than anyone else in the room, I can imagine someone dancing around to the chorus as a sort of self-empowerment thing.

Although the question leaves it ambiguous, I interpreted the OP to mean "old hits that would have been popular on TikTok if the platform existed when the song was first released."

New Rules peaked an entire year before Old Town Road. There was literally no Dua Lipa song charting when Old Town Road emerged.

To my recollection, TikTok didn't make any hits viral until 2019, a year after New Rules. The viral songs of 2017 & 2018 came from Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube trends, such as In Your Feelings, an Instagram hit.

Old Town Road and Truth Hurts were the first really big ones from TikTok.

Oh yeah TikTok was still Musical.ly up until fall 2018. I don't believe Musical.ly ever made any song into a hit. (Maaaaaybe "i hate u, i love u," but it wasn't an instant viral sensation and took it taking off on other platforms before really hitting the mainstream.)
