Harry Styles’ ‘Harry’s House’ Breaks Modern-Era U.S. Vinyl Sales Record According to initial reports, the LP sets a new record for the largest sales week for a vinyl album in the U.S. since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991.
BY KEITH CAULFIELD
AAfter only three days on sale, Harry Styles’ third solo album, Harry’s House, has broken the modern-era record for the largest sales week for a vinyl album in the U.S.
The vinyl edition of the album, released on May 20, has sold over 146,000 copies in the U.S. through May 22, according to initial reports to Luminate. That beats the previous single-week sales record, set by the debut week of Taylor Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version), when it sold 114,000 vinyl copies in the week ending Nov. 18, 2021.
It’s assumed that the first-week vinyl sales of Harry’s House will grow in the coming days, as the tracking week ends on Thursday, May 26. The set’s final sales number is expected to be announced on Sunday, May 29 – along with its expected robust debut on the multi-metric Billboard 200 albums chart. If Harry’s House debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, it will mark Styles’ third straight leader – the entirety of his solo albums.
Harry’s House is available in a number of vinyl variants, including a standard black vinyl pressing, a Target-exclusive yellow-colored vinyl and a sea glass green-colored edition exclusively sold through Styles’ webstore.
The stellar vinyl sales for Harry’s House shouldn’t be surprising, as his first two albums have been strong sellers on vinyl. His last album, 2019’s Fine Line, has sold 586,000 copies on vinyl in the U.S. (47% of its overall sales), and his self-titled 2017 debut has sold 263,000 on vinyl (36% of its total sales). Additionally, Fine Line was the top-seller on vinyl in 2020 in the U.S. and the No. 4-selling vinyl album of 2021.
Styles’ new record-breaking week with Harry’s House continues the epic comeback of the vinyl format. In 2021, for the first time since Luminate began tracking sales in 1991, vinyl albums outsold CD albums for the year – and vinyl became the leading format for album purchases overall in the U.S.: In 2021, one out of every three albums sold in the U.S. was vinyl. And, 2021 marked the 16th consecutive year of growth for the format.

Truly amazing to see vinyl's resurgence. I remember working at a music store in 1998 and I don't think we even stocked vinyl at all.
I would be very curious to know if there's any data on how many people are buying these as collector's items or just for decor/art as opposed to actually listening to vinyl regularly. Anybody know?

Harry Styles’ ‘Harry’s House’ Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 With Half-Million-Plus First Week in U.S. The set is only the fourth album in the last 18 months to earn 500,000-plus units in a single week. www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/harry-styles-harrys-house-number-one-billboard-200-chart-1235078807/

05/29/2022Harry Styles’ Harry’s House debuts atop the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated June 4) with a massive 521,500 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending May 26, according to Luminate. It’s the largest week of 2022 for any album and only the fourth album in the last 18 months to earn at least 500,000 units in a single week. It logs the biggest week for an album since Adele’s 30 debuted with 839,000 units in the week ending Nov. 25, 2021 (chart dated Dec. 4, 2021). (Styles and Adele also are labelmates — both are on Columbia Records.) Harry’s House is Styles’ third No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — the entirety of his solo releases. And all three have bowed at No. 1. He also topped the list with 2019’s Fine Line and his 2017 self-titled debut. Harry’s House was released on May 20. Harry’s House also logs a modern-era record for single-week vinyl album sales, as it sold 182,000 copies on vinyl in the U.S. That marks the largest week for an album on vinyl since Luminate began tracking music sales in 1991. It beats the previous high, set last year, when Taylor Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version) sold 114,000 vinyl copies in the week ending Nov. 18, 2021. The vinyl sales for Harry’s House were so large that vinyl sales alone would have made the album No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in all but three weeks of 2022 thus far. Harry’s House was preceded by the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit song “As It Was,” which has spent three weeks atop the list (through the most recently published chart, dated May 28). Styles ushered in the album with interviews and/or performances on Apple Music with Zane Lowe (May 16), SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show (May 18), NBC’s Today (May 19) and NPR’s Morning Edition (May 20). Apple Music also live streamed Styles’ One Night Only in New York concert from UBS Arena on May 20. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new June 4, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on June 1 (one day later than usual, owed to the Memorial Day holiday on May 30 in the U.S.). For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Harry’s House’s 521,500 equivalent album units earned, album sales comprise 330,000 (the largest sales week of 2022), SEA units comprise 189,000 (equaling 246.96 million on-demand streams of the set’s 13 tracks — 2022’s largest streaming week for a non-R&B/hip-hop or Latin album) and TEA units comprise 2,500. In the last 18 months, only four albums have earned at least 500,000 equivalent album units in a single week, and all did so in their debut frames: Harry’s House (521,500), Adele’s 30 (839,000); Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version) (604,500) and Drake’s Certified Lover Boy (612,500; chart dated Sept. 18, 2021). In terms of traditional album sales, the last album to sell more copies than Harry’s House in a single week was Adele’s 30, when it debuted with 692,000 copies sold in its first week (ending Nov. 25, 2021; chart dated Dec. 4, 2021). The only other album to sell more than Harry’s House in the past 18 months was Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version), when it sold 369,000 copies in its opening frame (week ending Nov. 18, 2021; chart dated Nov. 27, 2021). Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti holds at No. 2 on the latest Billboard 200 (155,000 equivalent album units; down 15%) after bowing at No. 1 three weeks ago. Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers falls 1-3 in its second week with 96,000 units (down 68%). Future’s former No. 1 I Never Liked You rounds out the top four, slipping 3-4 in its fourth week with 77,000 units (down 14%). Singer-songwriter Zach Bryan makes his Billboard 200 debut with his first major label album, American Heartbreak, bowing at No. 5. The 34-track set enters with 71,500 equivalent album units earned — the biggest week for a country album in 2022. Of the set’s starting sum, SEA units comprise 64,500 (equaling 84.09 million on-demand official streams of the album’s 34 songs), album sales comprise 6,000 and TEA units comprise 1,000. American Heartbreak was preceded by three top 40-charting hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, including the breakout single “Something in the Orange.” The cut became his first entry on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart on May 7. Bryan made his Billboard chart debut in September of 2019 when his DeAnn album reached No. 10 on Heatseekers South Central regional chart (which ranked the week’s top albums by new and developing artists in the south central region of the U.S.). By the end of 2021, Bryan had charted a trio of top 20-charting efforts on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart. Morgan Wallen’s former No. 1 Dangerous: The Double Album falls 5-6 on the new Billboard 200 with 51,500 equivalent album units earned (down 7%), Jack Harlow’s Come Home the Kids Miss You dips 6-7 (41,000; down 26%), Olivia Rodrigo’s chart-topping Sour rises 9-8 (32,500; up 1%), TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s Minisode 2: Thursday’s Child falls 4-9 in its second week (30,500; down 55%) and Lil Durk’s former No. 1 7220 is a non-mover at No. 10 (27,000; down 7%). Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes an exhaustive and thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. The Billboard 200's top 10 actually matched the HITS' top 10 this week.

Very interesting numbers because I was told by a user here that releasing the album as scheduled despite a leak was the worst decision he could make. It's almost as if leaks don't matter in 2022!
Great numbers for Harry. The album is solid and I can see it having good legs.

Just How Much Did Harry Styles’ Album Earn in One Week? Record-breaking vinyl sales — 182,000 copies to be exact — helped push 'Harry's House' past $7.26 million for week-one revenue.
BY ED CHRISTMAN
VVinyl is expensive to manufacture and complicated to ship, even without the long backlogs at pressing plants stretched beyond capacity. To get a sense of why it’s worth it, consider this: Harry Styles’ new Harry’s House album sold $4.49 million worth of vinyl records in its first week in stores in the U.S. alone, according to a Billboard estimate. That revenue came from 182,000 copies – the highest total since Luminate and its predecessor companies began tracking sales in 1991.
In the week ending May 26, Harry’s House album took in an estimated $7.26 million in the U.S., counting the money that retail accounts and digital service providers will pay Styles’ label, Columbia/Sony Music. Of that, vinyl accounted for 61.9% of week one U.S. revenue – at least partly because of a relatively high wholesale price of $24.70 and a list price of $39.98.
Streaming is easier and cheaper for labels than vinyl, which has made it the preferred format. But vinyl and CDs bring in more revenue, especially early on in the lifecycle of a project, which helps reduce the ratio of labels’ fixed costs to revenue. In many cases, vinyl and CD purchases also represent additional revenue, since some fans who buy them will also stream an album in a car or at other times they don’t have access to a turntable or CD player.
In Styles’ case, on-demand streaming was the second biggest format, which will bring in $1.32 million in revenue from on 253.3 million streams, of which 240.4 million were audio on-demand plays. (For estimation purposes, Billboard uses a blended rate of $.0053 for on-demand streams and a blended rate of $0.0038 for video streams since Luminate only counts paid video streams and ad-supported official video streams, but not user generated streams which would bring down the blended rate, but probably brings in additional revenue the album in generating that Billboard is unable to estimate.) The third biggest format was CDs, which had a wholesale price of $9.80 and accounted for $1.12 million from sales of 114,000 copies.
All told, physical music, including cassettes, generated $5.7 million, or 78.7% of the album’s first week revenue. Digital business—streaming plus album and song downloads accounted for nearly $1.55 million, or 21.3% of first week revenue.
Interestingly, sales – of vinyl, CDs, and downloads – provided 81,7% of first-week revenue, even though those formats only accounted for 63.5% of album consumption units, according to Billboard estimates. Which means that although streaming accounted for 36.9% of album consumption units, it only generated 18.3% of revenue. Of course, this is only after a week. At some point, sales will lose strength as compared to streaming, which will continue to generate revenue.
Harry’s House also boosted the consumption of Styles’ other albums, to the tune of an additional 3,000 album consumption units per week in the seven weeks leading to the new album’s debut.
Where did fans buy all of these copies? Looking at sales by store sector, non-traditional (Amazon and other online stores that sell physical products) led the way, accounting for 215,000 copies, or 65% of physical copies. Those numbers include an exclusive green vinyl edition sold by Sony Music’s direct-to-consumer operation. Mass merchants like Target—which had an exclusive yellow vinyl version of the album — sold 69,000 copies or 20.9%. Online stores like iTunes accounted for 24,000 sakes, or 7.3%, while independent stores sold 16,000 copies or 4.8%, and chain stores like FYE and Barnes & Noble selling over 6,000 copies or 2% of physical sales.

I would be very curious to know if there's any data on how many people are buying these as collector's items or just for decor/art as opposed to actually listening to vinyl regularly. Anybody know? I wouldn't be surprised if it were mostly for this reason. The idea of vinyl seems cool to me because of its retro and classic image, and it's great that there's still a market for physical product, but it just seems completely impractical, expensive, and goes against the very way people have come to listen to music recently. It offers no portability, vastly limiting where you can listen to the music (basically only at home), it is very large and clunky, expensive (both in terms of the discs and going out to buy a record player if you don't have one), and inconvenient (having to get up and walk over to the player if you want to change the song, etc.). I honestly can't imagine too many people anymore who listen to music primarily in this way, but I might be wrong and there's probably a special something to it they just love!!

^Not counting this week, oldbloke @ UKMix had vinyl as more than half YTD physical pure sales and 40% of the pure sales. So, clearly this is an audiophile crowd that doesn't mind paying a premium. It still accounted for only about 4% of the YTD SPS equivalent albums.

Thanks, Gary.
Biggest Billboard 200 dropper this week is The Black Keys' Dropout Boogie, down 1236 spots to No. 134.

After Hours and The Highlights playing musical chairs switcheroo on the Billboard 200 this week. It's really getting pretty silly. This rule definitely needs to be ended, but they probably wont do so until it affects at least several more artists, which I'm sure it will at some point.

Thanks, Gary. Biggest Billboard 200 dropper this week is The Black Keys' Dropout Boogie, down 1236 spots to No. 134. Now that's a drop!
But at any rate, I guess with artists like them who are past their prime and not likely to move a large number of units over time anyway, it doesn't really matter. As long as the label can secure a high debut week and brag about that - not many people are going to notice or care about it's trajectory in succeeding weeks.
