Not that surprised it only peaked in the Top 40. Two things to remember

1. As I said before, art pop like Kate is amongst the most critically acclaimed music of all time but it rarely crossover mainstream. Occasionally, acts like Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, or Fiona Apple will get one or two big hits but it's not a consistent thing for them. The careers of singers like Bjork, PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Sufjan Stevens, and others are not built on big singles or even big albums. The closest thing to a baroque pop superstar is Lana Del Rey and even then her biggest hit came due to an EDM remix; Born to Die (the song) never even charted! You can apply this same story to other genres as well like prog rock, grunge, post-punk, old school hardcore punk, hell even hip-hop; some of the most acclaimed and respected hip-hop acts of all time do not have Top 20 hits or when they did it was years after their critical peak.

2. A lot of us like to think of the 80s as big pop songs, fun hair metal, and crazy music videos making fun hit wonders, and yeah that is still true. But you go back through the year-end lists, more often than not it's filled with piano-driven, boring easy listening schlock that's been rightly forgotten to time. Seriously, go through some of the worst 80s years like 1980 or 1986 and you'll see just non-stop piano driven dirges that even Lewis Capaldi would laugh at.

So with that in mind, a song like RUTH: which is downbeat and melancholic with romantic elements but is not a ballad, and which has big production and a big hook but not bombastic or upbeat like 80s pop was, it makes sense it was a cult classic while not being a big chart hit.

The numbers released tomorrow (of Wednesday June 1st) will show if RUTH will go top 10 or top 5.

Funny thing is there's a dance song called Something Good which samples Kate Bush - Cloudbusting which went top 10 in the UK in 1991 and again in 2008 I think and it's her singing "I feel like something good is gonna happen" on loop.

It is a given thee 77 year old Brenda lee will be in the top 10 again this year
But Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree was recorded by a 13 year old girl

and the gaps between hits thing, you can also look at Christmas songs for that too. pre 1963 songs that now chart that were blocked by chart rules for 50 years tend to have all those records

Why dont record labels and/or radio ever “re-release” songs anymore. Used to happen all the time in the 80’s. RUTH would be so cool to hear on the radio again. It’s always been an underrated 80’s song in the US imo and now it’s getting more attention than ever here. Fun to see as a chart geek.

Re-releasing nowadays doesn't make sense for newer songs and newer technology unless you're re-recording the material (like with Jojo and Taylor Swift), you're updating or changing the instrumentation with remixes or making it acoustic, or if you're re-printing new vinyl. It made sense to re-release older songs because things like speaker and recording equipment was much different back in the 60s and 70s. Even in the 80s, recording and tape machines had changed so it made sense to re-release music. That's why if you go on Spotify, you see "Remastered" next to Beatles or Beach Boys songs on Spotify; it's been revamped to accommodate changes in speakers and audio technology. There'd need to be another change in recording for re-releases to make a come back.

I thought he was referring to general pushes on older songs, similar to what is happening with RUTH now (although this isn’t exactly a label push).
If that’s the question (and I guess it is one I sort of have), I think it would be tough for labels to put a push on an older previously established hit and try to revamp them as a current again. A song would always need some sort of a hook that ties it into something current for it to work, whether a viral meme or a movie/show thing, like this song. And even then, is it short lived or something that could have legs. I think RUTH is an example of a song that could have legs if given some sort of additional promo. Not to say it would have a full chart run now or anything but enough for it to make a reasonable mark.

Top 5 is possible, but the prediction seems like it's giving a lot of streams outside Spotify: it's doing half of Spotify on Apple based on the position, and it was behind As It Was on Amazon until recently, which suggests a weak Spotify multi like 1.7? Top 10 seems almost certain though, likely #7, but getting past Heat Waves/Big Energy might be hard, especially since sales are now /6 instead of /5.

Even discounting Dua's presence "Cold Heart" is a weird outlier...it was technically a new song but all of Elton's vocals were 30-50 years old. Not much different from Elvis' "A Little Less Conversation" except that Elton is still alive.

Something to ponder: Never mind top 10- would "Cold Heart" have even reached the Hot 100 without Dua Lipa's presence? Given that Elton hadn't been on the chart since the '90s, the odds weren't in his favor, even given the chart's relative weakness in recent times.

Hmm, I don't know about older songs like from the 80s but the it'd be easier if older material from a hot act could be re-pushed.

Think of how 'I Fall Apart' by Post Malone or how some of Doja's older songs resurfaced when they blew up. Hell, even you could even put in Lizzo in this category with her first two hits. I think that could be a safer bet than pushing an older song. But if they are to push material that's decades old, I think the best way would be to re-release albums (maybe deluxes) and shoot music videos. It didn't have a resurgence but the music video for Rocket Man which was released in 2017 has a decent amount of views, imagine if it was promoted properly.
