Not sure if this will make sense. Less to do with Carrie’s surprising decline and more with the climate… but I think part of the problem in the country genre is there hasn’t quite been a decent changing of the guard besides Luke and Morgan. All these artists mentioned above are what, 20 years into their very successful careers, but how long are they expected to keep selling well for? It’s definitely worse for the females than males, considering at Kacey’s peak she debuted with 77k, which is not anywhere close to what Miranda and Carrie were doing at their best. So our expectations are still so high for these mainstream artists who are almost 40 because well for the girls, there isn’t anyone else who charts like this yet… which is super shitty. I mean Carly is winning female vocalist but she’s selling 10k. Also let’s look at ticket sales. I’m sure Carrie has sold more than 32k tickets to her tour already, because people want to go and hear her old songs that they know they love. They’re still her fans but they might have fallen off of keeping up with everything new or maybe they just don’t listen to albums anymore. But I think the live sector and how these artists still do realllly well there is clearly becoming more important in light of all these shitty sales.

I agree, while there have been new male artists who have taken over as the main men in country (Combs and Wallen) whose numbers far beat any other men in the genere, who used to be Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean, there haven't been women who have taken over the spot Miranda and Carrie held for the past two decades.
None of the new women have come even close at matching the success Miranda and Carrie maintained when they were at their peaks. Heck, none of them even really match where they are at now either being nearly 20 years in, with the exception of Kacey, who I feel like is riding the high from Golden Hour, which can only last so long.

I miss the times when Faith, Martina, and Sara in the early to mid-2000s (and before that Shania) were owning the charts for women. I feel Miranda and Carrie took over after them but there hasn't been anybody of their caliber since.

I remember a Carrie fan on Twitter posted a meme when Folklore came out and it said “there goes the last great American dynasty” with a picture of Carrie and Miranda. And it’s kinda true. 🥲

Alright. Question for everyone. How many of you miss the days where Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift were the only females to top the singles charts between 2006-2009?

Honestly I don't miss it since at least now more women are topping the radio chart as compared to back then where it was only Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. I do wish we had a woman who could sell albums like they did back then but I will gladly take women selling less albums if it means radio is more on board with them.

I loved seeing the two of them absolutely own the genre. They were right up there selling with the main men in the genre and giving them a run for their money. Like others have said though, I do appreciate the amount of more women on the radio now though.

Of course I would have wanted more women to be successful and reach the highest of highs then but also them two being on top was such a moment and it was so much fun to watch. Music used to feel like such an event compared to how it is today, especially in country music. So I second the love/hate relationship with it.

The usual neglect of Eric Church (the separately released double album last year did around 50k each) and Chris Stapleton (which is less popular than Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen but is more popular than everybody else) in this kind of discussion.

Eric still does great. His drop off this time was about what Miranda’s was from wings to wildcard (I think?). So it’ll be fun to see what it is next. He has such a loyal church choir fanbase that I think he’ll be in the 40s still. I’ll always be interested in listening to his albums, because he’s the artist guy. As for Stapleton, I forget he’s even in this genre because he's that popular and adored by so many types of people. Is there anyone who doesn’t like him 😂

Idk if Eric suffered the same stocking issues that have been persisting lately. His album was released around the time of My Savior, and I don’t remember people having issues finding MS. I personally saw it in most stores, which I can’t say the same for D&R.

The breakdown for D&R is not disclosed yet, so I can only give you EC's: Heart: 13k CDs, 12k vinyl LPs, slightly less than 16k digital, SEA 8k (10.54 million streams for 9 songs), TEA 1k (40k sales, 49k SPS) &: 11k vinyl LPs Soul: 14k CDs, 13k vinyl LPs, slightly less than 15k digital, SEA 10k (13.3 million streams for 9 songs), TEA 1k (42k sales, 53k SPS)

I'd be curious what D&R would pull in if they had the vinyls available on the release date, like Eric did. Eric pulled in great streaming for albums that only consisted of 9 songs.

I think vinyl is definitely more popular among SOME fan bases more than others. @ Miranda only releasing Marfa on vinyl and not CD was a choice. I buy Eric, Chris and Miranda’s vinyls idk why I think it’s just the songwriter part of them makes me gravitate to that format. But not sure I would buy anyone else’s (current mainstream) in this genre that way. Re the stocking issues, I know it’s fun and tradition to go to stores etc to get the CDs (my target has had everything so far) but do most people not just order online now? Like from the official store or amazon? Especially since it might get there a day early 😀

I think vinyl is definitely more popular among SOME fan bases more than others. Usually the artists with die-hard fans will have better vinyl (or other unconventional media) sales. Star-crossed did 26k on vinyl (largest for country album) and 2k on cassette. Sturgill Simpson did 15k vinyl for Cuttin’ Grass, Vol. 1, 14k vinyl for Cuttin’ Grass, Vol. 2, and 13k vinyl for The Ballad of Dood & Juanita.

The one thing I dread would be week #2 numbers. Carrie Underwood is sure to take a tumble on the top 200 chart.

10 consecutive Top 10 debuts on the all-genre Billboard 200. At least that streak is still alive :)
But it still sucks to see her streak of #1 debuts on the country-specific albums chart come to an end. :( The longest such streak in history though; and one that is not likely to be beaten for quite some time, if even in my lifetime. She’s still a legend.

Do we have a “standard” percentage for her contemporaries of what a 2nd week drop off should look like in this day and age?

I didn’t really see any big publications review Luke’s album yet. Usually they come out a a couple days before so it’s not just Carrie.

Thinking about the physical album’s reported lack of availability, I was at Walmart earlier and decided to take a look at their pitiful music section to see if it was there. I saw no copies of this album, but several copies of My Savior on both CD and vinyl.
Frankly, I don’t see how any artist sells many physical albums at all anymore if what I saw today is representative of what’s available in stores these days.

I went to my Target today and was also curious. The CD shelves were insanely depleted but they did have multiple copies of Carrie and Luke. I’m in a big city thought idk if that matters.

I went to a local Target and Wal Mart today. Both had a few copies of Denim and Rhinestones but neither had a spot for Luke Combs new cd. Only explanation I can think of is that some retailers don’t get copies on release date anymore since the demand for physical copies of music/movies isn’t that high anymore.

Only explanation I can think of is that some retailers don’t get copies on release date anymore since the demand for physical copies of music/movies isn’t that high anymore. Last couple times I've tried to buy cds on release day, they do have them, but they just don't have anyone who is designated to put them out anymore So I think they are all sitting in boxes in the back, but don't get set out until somebody happens to randomly get the job of restocking the Electronics section on some random slow evening who knows how many days later. At least that's how it's been at Targets in my area. I found an employee who was able to march into the back and grab me copies of Reba's last two cds on release day (2 different Targets like 2 years apart), and in the process of apologizing for them not being set out the second guy pretty much told me that they just don't have anyone responsible for that job anymore, lmao. But like, LUKE COMBS??!!?! That is the level of superstar that is still going to generate at least some release-day interest! It's kinda shocking to me that they don't at least have somebody watching for the highest-profile releases like that.

And yet another album that leaves Billboard 200 after 3 weeks on chart. Chart run: 10-72-123

I just don't get it. This album is miles better than Cry Pretty imo, I just don't know why it isn't making more noise. I noticed that Luke's new album brought in 30k for it's second week, which is only 13k more than What You See Is What You Get brought in last week, so if I were to guess in the forthcoming weeks, there's a good chance it will be pulling in less than that one, which is nearly three years old.
Are country album's being released now just losing longevity?
