I thought some of you would like this one more, so I was a bit surprised to see it not be a bit more popular. I just love this song and think lyrically and vocally it is among their best. Happy it made the Top 10 but wish it had made the top 5, where I think it belongs.
After a long history of being underwhelmed by The Wilkinsons songs that had randomly showed up in rankdowns previously, "L.A." showing up in castle's random shuffle series was the first time I genuinely enjoyed a song by them! The fact that it only made it to #5 on my list here is a real testament to how much my opinion of them has improved since! The melody and overall energy level are both spot on, imo.
Genuinely shocked to see "Nothing But Love" miss the top 5! The chorus hit me with a blast of nostalgia that I wasn't expecting. I think that the "There I was, the note was even written" line was stuck in my head from somewhere in my childhood, which is the sort of satisfying feeling that immediately made it a frontrunner for my #1 rank. (I'd criticize .indulgecountry for that janky ranking, but as far as I know this #18 might have been his highest rank remaining... )
"Fast Car" overstayed. This is a decent cover of a great song. I did enjoy it, but to be this close to the top 5?! I could see it being deserved in the album rankdown, for sure, but not so much against the hits.
I’m rather behind on commenting here, but I wanted to post a few thoughts before this officially wraps up.
As for the songs that left early on, there were few surprises along the way. Of those, “Highway” was such a favorite discovery of mine that I ended up seeking the album out on Amazon and bought a used cd that I could burn. While I’m not at all surprised that this was one of the first couple of songs to exit, it’s a testament to the influence rankdowns can have!
The same can be said for "Shame On Me" as I absolutely adored it from the very first listen. I loved it so much that it ended up being one of my all-time favorites from the group and ranked it inside my top 3.
Here are my predictions for the final four:
4. Boy Oh Boy 3, 1999 2. Fly (The Angel Song) 1. 26 Cents
Oh wow, an upset victory!!! I figured "26 Cents" was the shoe-in, since it's the one song of theirs that seems to generate any sort of conversation nowadays! Personally I have always found it a tad underwhelming though, so I'm actually kinda happy with this outcome. It's one of those songs where the entire appeal hinges around a hook that tries to feel clever but ends up wearing thin pretty quickly...
"Fly" has such a catchy chorus, it almost rivaled "Nothing But Love" for my #1! That melody is so engaging So glad to see it hang on to the top 3!
"1999" was a hard one for me to rank, but the more I listened to it the higher it got. There is something about it that just got better and better...
