It's the same as Hot 100. The last 5 years is very top-heavy because streaming created different chart runs that their point formula can't adjust for.

I mean, the biggest albums are the ones that moved the most units, not the ones that spent the most time on the Billboard 200. This is probably a better list to use en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums. Not to spoil anything, but Thriller is ahead of 21.

I think the biggest discrepancy is that starting in 2009, they removed all recurrency rules for albums charting on the Billboard 200, so this undoubtedly gives an unfair advantage to albums charting from this point forward, unless this list was somehow adjusted for that. It seems though that recurrency rules also weren't as strict before the 1990s, so albums that charted starting roughly sometime during the '90s to 2009 would be the most disadvantaged.

That chart should be discontinued if anything lol.

What they should do is ret-con old year-end charts with the all-time formula since a lot of old Billboard year-end charts are of shaky reliability.
