www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/rod-wave-beautiful-number-one-billboard-200-albums-chart-1235129066/Rod Wave’s ‘Beautiful Mind’ Bows at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums ChartBy Keith Caulfield Plus: Megan Thee Stallion's scores her fifth consecutive top 10 with "Traumazine." Rod Wave’s Beautiful Mind bows atop the Billboard 200 chart (dated Aug. 27), scoring the rapper his second No. 1 album. The set enters with 115,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 18, according to Luminate. He previously topped the list with his last release, SoulFly, which opened at No. 1 on the chart dated April 10, 2021. Also in the new top 10 of the Billboard 200, Megan Thee Stallion scores her fifth top 10, all earned consecutively, as Traumazine starts at No. 4. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Aug. 27, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (Aug. 23). Of Beautiful Mind’s 115,000 equivalent album units earned, SEA units comprise 113,000 (equaling 157.73 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 24 tracks), album sales comprise 2,000 and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. All told, Beautiful Mind is Wave’s fourth straight top 10 effort on the Billboard 200 — the entirety of his charting releases. Aside from the chart-topping SoulFly, for a week in 2021, he also logged a top 10 each in 2020 (Pray 4 Love, No. 2) and 2019 (Ghetto Gospel, No. 10). Beautiful Mind was led by the single “Cold December,” which premiered in January and marked the artist’s sixth top 40-charting hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in February (peaking at No. 38). At the top of May, the album was announced for a June 3 release, but was eventually pushed back until Aug. 12. Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti falls 1-2 on the latest Billboard 200, after eight nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1, with 108,000 equivalent album units earned (down less than 1%). Beyoncé’s chart-topping Renaissance is a non-mover at No. 3 with 64,000 units (down 29%). Megan Thee Stallion notches her fifth top 10 album on the Billboard 200, all earned in a row, as Traumazine debuts at No. 4 with 63,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 54,000 (equaling 85.72 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 18 tracks), album sales comprise 8,000 and TEA units comprise 1,000. Traumazine is the rapper’s sixth charting effort on the Billboard 200. She first dented in the tally in 2019 with Tina Snow (peaking at No. 166) and has followed it with five straight top 10 efforts: Fever (No. 10, 2019), Sugar (No. 7, 2020), Good News (No. 2, 2020), Something for Thee Hotties: From Thee Archives (No. 5, 2021) and Traumazine (No. 4). The Traumazine album was announced just one day before its release on Aug. 12. The set was preceded by a trio of Hot 100-charting hits: “Sweetest Pie,” with Dua Lipa (No. 15 peak), “Plan B” (No. 29) and “Pressurelicious,” featuring Future (No. 55). The set also boasts collaborations with Key Glock, Latto, Pooh Shiesty, Rico Nasty, Jhené Aiko, Lucky Daye, Sauce Walka, Big Pokey and Lil’ Keke. YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s The Last Slimeto slips 2-5 in its second week with 50,000 equivalent album units earned (down 54%), Morgan Wallen’s former leader Dangerous: The Double Album dips 4-6 with 48,000 (down less than 1%) and Harry Styles’ chart-topping Harry’s House falls 5-7 with 43,000 units (down 1%). The Weeknd’s compilation album The Highlights returns to the top 10, rising 36-8 with just over 28,000 equivalent album units earned (up 76%). The set contains such hits as “Blinding Lights,” “Save Your Tears” (both from The Weeknd’s studio album After Hours). On the new chart, the TEA and SEA units for those songs contribute to The Highlights, as a song’s activity is assigned to the artist’s album with the most traditional album sales in a week. (The Highlights sold 1,000 copies in the latest tracking week, while After Hours sold under 1,000.) A week ago, the TEA and SEA for the songs were directed to After Hours, as it outsold The Highlights that week. Closing out the new top 10 are two former No. 1s: Future’s I Never Liked You, falling 7-9 with nearly 28,000 equivalent album units earned (down 4%) and Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour, which slides 9-10 with 25,000 units (down 1%). Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes an exhaustive and thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data, removing any suspicious or unverifiable activity using established criteria before final chart calculations are made and published. ^Probably not that good since most of her albums are not in stock. Fans of hers probably don't stream.

Also, if iTunes was any indication, activity probably dropped off after the first few days that followed her passing.

Grease is such an iconic piece…
The album actually returned to the top 10 in 1998, before the catalog restrictions were lifted. The film did well on its re-release as it topped the Catalog Albums chart for many weeks. Don’t let those RIAA numbers fool you, the album has sold at least 6 million in the Soundscan era alone. The numbers would be much closer to Saturday Night Fever, which is not surprising. 1977-1978 launched a few of the biggest blockbusters in the rock era.

WolfS- we probably touched on this prior, but... Grease was a two-record album, much like Saturday Night Fever. Do we know if their certifications reflect that, or each album counting once? I would think Grease had sold at least 8 million copies total when it was certified, rather than just 4 million. Though its Billboard 200 run was relatively short compared to some other blockbusters (77 weeks in its initial run; SNF was 120).
Nonetheless, it's certainly overdue for an updated certification, given what it has sold in the SoundScan era.

Well, it was certified in 1984, so that 8 million is a legit 8 million. True, it does have shorter run than SNF, but it seems like Grease has a bit of a cult following. With streaming factored in, that number may be very close to 15 million units… just speculation. I haven’t gone through the analytics of it yet. I’m guessing UMG has the rights to the soundtrack, and most labels tend to passive with soundtracks, though I was surprised to see Dirty Dancing recertified. The same situation effects The Sound Of Music, which clearly has the highest shipments of any LP from 1965. For an album that did 109 weeks in the top 10, that “gold” plaque really doesn’t cut it. Sad but true.

When did the RIAA start counting multi-record releases twice (or however many units an album contained)? I used to have the RIAA book, that may have stated as much, though it's long MIA.
The SNF soundtrack was certified for 11 million in 1984, 15m in 1999 and 16m in 2017.

^I just looked at my 1990 RIAA book. No mention of counting each album for 2cd/LP releases.

The musical album chairs involving The Highlights continued this week on the Billboard 200. As such, After Hours didn't even chart, resulting in the former being in the top 10.

^ Looks like it was 1992 that the RIAA started counting each disc in a multi-disc set as one unit toward certification.
Biggest dropper on the Billboard 200 is Calvin Harris' Funk Wav Bounces, Vol. 2, down 149 spots to No. 166.
Notably, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard's Omnium Gatherum debuts at No. 8 on Album Sales, but misses the Billboard 200.
Olivia Newton-John's Physical reenters Album Sales at No. 81, while Grease comes in right behind it at 82 (down 23 spots).

Plus, new albums from Danger Mouse & Black Thought, Megan Thee Stallion, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard & Hollywood Undead debut in top 10.
ENHYPEN have landed their first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Aug. 27), as the group’s Manifesto: Day 1 climbs 2-1 in its third week on the list. The set sold 14,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 18 (down 20%). The South Korean group’s album debuted at No. 3 on the Aug. 13-dated chart at No. 3 with 38,000 sold, following its CD release on July 29.
Manifesto: Day 1 was initially released to stream and via digital retailers on July 4, but did not chart until after its CD hit stores. Since its release, the album has sold 69,000 copies – with 68,000 on CD (the other 1,000 are digital albums).
Like many K-pop releases, the CD configuration of Manifesto was issued in collectible deluxe packages (11 total, including a version exclusively sold through Target), each with a standard set of items and randomized elements (like photocards). The set was not issued on any other physical format. Manifesto: Day 1 is the fourth charting title for ENHYPEN on Top Album Sales, with all four having reached the top five of the list. Notably, the 14,000 sold for Manifesto: Day 1 is the lowest sum for the week’s top-selling album in more than a year. The No. 1 on Top Album Sales last sold as few, or fewer, on the July 24, 2021-dated chart, when Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour sold 10,000 copies, notching its third nonconsecutive week atop the list (of an eventual total of four weeks at No. 1). Also in the new top 10 on Top Album Sales: there are debuts from Danger Mouse and Black Thought’s collaborative album, Megan Thee Stallion, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard and Hollywood Undead. Plus, BrockHampton’s year-and-a-half old Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine re-enters the chart at No. 5 following its delayed vinyl release. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. At No. 2 on Top Album Sales, Danger Mouse and Black Thought’s collaborative album Cheat Codes debuts with 11,000 copies sold. The long-in-the-works project features guests including A$AP Rocky, Run the Jewels, the late MF Doom, Michael Kiwanuka, Joey Bada$$, Russ, Raekwon and Conway the Machine. Cheat Codes is the highest charting effort ever on Top Album Sales for either Danger Mouse or Black Thought. Cheat Codes also bows at No. 1 on Tastemaker Albums, which ranks the top-sellers at independent and small chain record stores. It sold 4,000 copies at the indie and small chain sector – 38% of its first-week sales. Harry Styles’ former No. 1 Harry’s House climbs 4-3 on Top Album Sales with 10,000 sold (down 1%). The set’s cumulative U.S. sales stand at 562,000 since its release in May. It continues to be 2022’s top-selling album, and the only effort to sell more than a half-million copies in the U.S. this year. Megan Thee Stallion’s new Traumazine sold 8,000 copies in its debut frame, arriving at No. 4 on Top Album Sales – the rapper’s highest-charting effort yet on the list. It’s her third top 10 on the tally overall. BrockHampton’s year-and-a-half-old Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine re-enters Top Album Sales at No. 5, following its delayed vinyl release on Aug. 12. (The vinyl released was originally slated for April.) The set sold 8,000 copies in the tracking week, effectively all on vinyl, prompting its No. 1 debut on the Vinyl Albums chart. Roadrunner spent one week previously on the chart, when it debuted at No. 3 on the April 24, 2021-dated list. Two former No. 1s are next up on the chart, as Beyoncé’s Renaissance falls 3-6 with 8,000 sold (down 43%) while SEVENTEEN’s SEVENTEEN 4th Album Repackage: Sector 17 rises 10-7 with 7,000 sold (up 7%). King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard notches its second top 10 on Top Album Sales – 16th charting effort overall on the list – with the No. 8 debut of Omnium Gatherum, following its vinyl LP release on Aug. 12. The set sold nearly 7,000 copies in the tracking week – effectively all from its vinyl editions. The band’s album was initially released for streaming and via digital retail in April. Rounding out the top 10 on the new Top Album Sales chart are TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s former leader Minisode 2: Thursday’s Child, falling 8-9 with 7,000 sold (down 2%) and Hollywood Undead’s new album Hotel Kalifornia, debuting at No. 10 with 6,000 sold. Morgan Wallen’s ‘Dangerous’ Is Close to Breaking Longest Top 10 Record on Billboard 200 After 83 nonconsecutive weeks, the album is only two weeks away from tying the record set by a singular artist in the chart's top 10.

MMorgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album is closing in on a 58-year-old record on Billboard’s signature albums chart – the Billboard 200.
The set has spent 83 nonconsecutive weeks in the top 10 of the chart (through the list dated Aug. 27), since its debut at No. 1 on the Jan. 23, 2021, tally. That is only two weeks away from tying the record set by a singular artist. The album spent its first 10 weeks at No. 1 and has fallen out of the top 10 for only one week since its arrival on the list.
Since the Billboard 200 began publishing on a regular weekly basis, with the March 24, 1956-dated chart, the album with the most weeks in the top 10 is the original cast recording of My Fair Lady, with 173 weeks in the top 10 between 1956-60. The seven albums with the most weeks in the top 10 are all cast recordings or film soundtracks. (See list, below.)
However, for albums by a singular artist (not a multi-artist soundtrack or cast recording), Peter, Paul and Mary’s self-titled set has the most weeks in the top 10, with 85 nonconsecutive weeks in 1962-64. The album spent seven nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 1962-63.
Adele’s 21 and Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. have the second-most weeks in the top 10, among albums by artists, with 84 each.
For 21, its 84 weeks in the top 10 were nonconsecutive in 2011-16. Born in the U.S.A.’s 84 weeks were consecutive, from its debut at No. 9 on the June 23, 1984-dated chart through its last week in the top 10 on Jan. 25, 1986.
21 spent 24 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 2011-12, and Born in the U.S.A. ruled the list for seven nonconsecutive weeks in 1984-85.
It’s likely that Dangerous will match the top 10 runs of 21 and Born in the U.S.A. on the Sept. 3-dated chart (whose top 10 is scheduled to be announced on Sunday, Aug. 28). Dangerous is on track to tie Peter, Paul and Mary’s 85-week-run on the Sept. 10-dated list, and surpass it a week later on the Sept. 17 chart.

Dangerous has been a monster-sized hit on the Billboard 200, becoming one of only four country albums with at least 10 weeks at No. 1 on the chart. It also finished 2021 as the year-end No. 1 album on the Billboard 200.
Dangerous debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated Jan. 23, 2021, and has left the weekly top 10 only once, on the Jan. 1, 2022-dated list, when it was squeezed out by a number of older holiday albums (typical for the season on the chart).
On Feb. 2, 2021, in the middle of the album’s fourth week of release, a video emerged showing Wallen using the N-word. He subsequently issued an apology. Reaction from the industry was swift, and his music was removed from dozens of high-profile playlists on streamers, and multiple radio groups dropped his music. However, on the Billboard 200, the album posted a gain in units earned during its fourth week and held at No. 1. Wallen spent 2021 out of the spotlight, but has been re-embraced by streamers and country radio (as he adds his seventh top 10 on the latest Country Airplay chart, dated Aug. 27). He’s also donated at least $500,000 to charitable causes, including the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville and Rock Against Racism. Earlier in 2022, Wallen performed at the Billboard Music Awards (May 15), marking his first performance at major awards ceremony since being caught on video using the slur. At the awards, he took home the trophy for top country male artist. (In 2021, he won three Billboard Music Awards, but was not invited to accept them during the broadcast.)
Some history on the Billboard 200 chart: The list began publishing as a regular, weekly fixture with the March 24, 1956-dated chart, where Harry Belafonte’s Belafonte was the No. 1 album in the U.S. At the time, the chart was only 10-positions and was named Best Selling Pop Albums. (Its name would change only a week later, to Best Selling Popular Albums.)
Prior to March 24, 1956, Billboard had tracked album popularity, but not consistently. The first overall album chart appeared 11 years earlier, on March 24, 1945. That chart was published on an irregular basis until it became a weekly fixture starting with the March 24, 1956 issue of Billboard magazine.
Notably, for a little over four years (between May 25, 1959-Aug. 10, 1963), the album chart was split into two separate lists, each tracking the sales of mono or stereo-recorded albums. These two charts were named Best Selling Monophonic LPs and Best Selling Stereophonic LPs. The names of the charts would change slightly over time, but Billboard would publish two charts for mono and stereo albums until Aug. 10, 1963. The following week, Aug. 17, 1963, the mono and stereo charts folded back into one overall chart.
The chart would grow to 200 positions in 1967. In 1992, and after a number of name changes, the chart would settle on its current name, Billboard 200.
For the above list of the albums with the most weeks in the top 10, if an album charted on both the mono and stereo chart, its total weeks in the top 10 is its combined total across both charts (without duplicating weeks). So, if an album was in the top 10 on both the mono and stereo chart in the same week, that counts as one week in the top 10.
As for how the Billboard 200 chart is compiled… through the May 18, 1991-dated chart, the chart ranked the week’s top-selling albums in the U.S., based on reports obtained from record stores. On the May 25, 1991-dated chart, the list began using electronically monitored point-of-sale purchase information courtesy of SoundScan, Inc. (now known as Luminate).
The chart would continue to rank the week’s top-selling albums, by traditional album sales, through the Dec. 6, 2014-dated chart. The following week (Dec. 13, 2014), the list transformed again, becoming a multi-metric popularity chart, ranking overall consumption, as measured in equivalent album units.
Because of how the Billboard 200 is now compiled – where a lengthy track list can help accrue large streaming totals – an album like Dangerous (which debuted with 30 songs and was later reissued with three bonus tracks) profits greatly from the continued weekly streams of its hefty track list. Many high-charting albums on the Billboard 200 now have long track lists. In 2022, across the 17 albums that have been No. 1, the average album length is 19 tracks.
Further, older albums (known as catalog albums; generally defined today as titles 18 months old or older), were mostly restricted from charting on the Billboard 200 from May 25, 1991-Nov. 28, 2009. From Dec. 5, 2009-onwards, catalog and current (new/recently released) albums chart together on the Billboard 200. Today, older albums regularly spend hundreds of weeks on the chart – such as Journey’s Greatest Hits (more than 700 weeks) and Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits (nearly 600). Based on its track record thus far, one can imagine Dangerous could be on the Billboard 200 for hundreds of weeks to come.
