I honestly don’t really believe this. This is one of those pre-release bits of gossip that no one can verify and could just have been made up. Anti-Hero was made for Tik Tok. The only way Lavender Haze was the first single is if it was turned in before Anti-Hero was created lol. I could VERY well imagine someone mixing up CREATING/SHOOTING/CONCEPTUALIZING the *video* first, which Taylor says she did, with it being the *planned first single*. The part that supports Anti-Hero not being the original lead single is apparently how Taylor said it was such a weird song and they shouldn’t expect it to go number one. But, IDK. You get the stars for the first single’s video. It has the quotable chorus for Tik Tok. I just don’t buy this was some last second switch. Isn’t the Theallknower actually the one with insider info and the receipts to show it? There’s too much ambiguity with the way it’s phrased. An original pick for first single can mean a million things, extending far back.

The video has nothing to do with airplay. did i say it did? Although Anti Hero made it to #1 on Pop, it's been a struggle for Taylor the last few years to get a big pop hit. There's no guarantee that Lavender Haze or any other song from Midnights will be a big pop hit. In her 1989 Era everything she released to radio was a big hit. Pop radio is not embracing Taylor in 2023 like it was in 2014.

There are more radio friendly songs on Midnights than LH though, I think she can do better on pop radio with the right singles

I personally believe this is the last Midnights hit on pop.
I hope I’ll come back to quote this post in like 6 months, when a song gets a great chart run like “Delicate” did after people doubted her in the reputation era.

I think Question..? could be the song that surprises everyone, the same way Delicate did.

Bejeweled should've been the second single. It was the highest debuting song from the album on MMI callouts, is probably the second most known song from it thanks to a huge TikTok trend, and just has the right amount of pop appeal to smash at the format.
With that being said, I'm still shocked to see that Lavender Haze is struggling so much. It's a very sexy, sturdily crafted pop song and in a perfect world that alone would've granted it major pop radio success, let alone the facts that it's following a huge radio smash and that it's featured on what is probably the biggest pop record of the decade thus far.

I hope I’ll come back to quote this post in like 6 months, when a song gets a great chart run like “Delicate” did after people doubted her in the reputation era. Midnight Rain has the appeal/ability IMO, but I'm honestly not holding my breath for it to get a radio release or get a good push if it did get released. Not after seeing what happened with this and Bejeweled and that fact we have a bajillion TVs to still come. There's also Hits Different which could get Ours'd/New Romantics'd, but again, will her radio team put in the effort or will it just be this/Lover/Ready for It/willow/cardigan all over again? I do think there's quite the potential to really stretch out this era on other formats, though! There's quite a few tracks that could pull some numbers on Hot AC/AC and AAA with not much effort. And might as well, too, if there really are videos for all the other standard edition tracks.

“Hits Different” is my last hope tbh.
I like to think that she’s holding it back to give it a proper release right before the tour starts and get another hit. I can see it scoring decent debuts if she doesn’t just drop it randomly like she did “the lakes” (and “right where you left me”/“it’s time to go”).

imo she shot herself in the foot releasing bejeweled's video with the album release as it's easily the safest choice for pop on paper but i worry it's too overexposed now. karma is easily the second most pop friendly choice but as was pointed out to me multiple pages back, it has the potential to reaffirm the idea of taylor being smug and "plying the victim" to certain parts of the gp, an image she only just has begun to shed. midnight rain is a tempting choice since it's streaming so well but if the radio is lukewarm towards this then i think rain would be a really hard sell
that said, hopefully the update today is indicative of what's to come and we don't have to worry abt the third single for a lil while longer !

Releasing Bejeweled’s video with the album was indeed the only confusing, and imo, actual misstep so far.
To me that is the big pop smash of the album after Anti-Hero. Karma would do well but as we all have said, we don’t really know if the GP wants to hear those themes again from Taylor. Bejeweled feels perfectly in line with where she is as a mature but still very playful and sexy woman.

Definitely agree with the previous ones here - Bejeweled sounded like it was meant to smash. Irdk why they released the video so early and totally forgot about it. Plus it's a very cute song title and very cute to say and pronounce lol. Bi-juwld. Lmao

Didn’t Bejewelled’s video allow her to occupy the entire top ten on the Hot 100?
