The Contenders: Will Drake and 21 Savage’s Debut Be Big Enough to Take Over From Taylor Swift? As Swift's blockbuster enters its third week on the Billboard 200, it faces its stiffest challenge for the top spot: star rappers Drake and 21 Savage's "Her Loss."
By Andrew Unterberger www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/drake-21-savage-her-loss-taylor-swift-midnights-charts-1235168497/ 11/9/2022Welcome to The Contenders, a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming Billboard 200 albums chart dated Nov. 12): Taylor Swift’s Midnights blockbuster faces competition from superstar labelmate Drake’s team-up with 21 Savage, while fellow pop icon Rihanna leads the new Black Panther: Wakanda Forever sequel soundtrack. Drake and 21 Savage, Her Loss (OVO/Republic/Slaughter Gang/Epic): Following the rare commercial downturn of June’s surprise-released club detour Honestly, Nevermind — which still debuted atop the Billboard 200, albeit with relatively low numbers by Drake’s pace-setting standards — the historically successful rapper looks to rebound with last Friday’s (Nov. 4) Her Loss. It’s a 16-track team-up with frequent collaborator 21 Savage (who also appeared on Nevermind’s lone breakout hit, the Billboard Hot 100-topping “Jimmy Cooks”) and many of the album’s bad-guy bars set social media on fire over the weekend (for both positive and not-so-positive reasons). Collaborative albums in hip-hop often add up to less than the sum of their parts — take March’s Better Than You, a team-up of DaBaby and YoungBoy Never Broke Again that charted lower on the Billboard 200 (No. 10) than either rapper’s then-most-recent solo LP. Both Drake and 21 Savage have scored in this lane before, though — Drake topped the Billboard 200 in 2015 with the Future team-up What a Time to Be Alive and 21 Savage did the same in 2020 with the album he made with marquee producer Metro Boomin, Savage Mode II. Various Artists, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Music From and Inspired By (Roc Nation/Def Jam/Hollywood Records): The soundtrack to the original Black Panther movie was a blockbuster success nearly on the level of the superhero film it accompanied, topping the Billboard 200, spawning a pair of Hot 100 top 10 hits and even scoring a rare nomination for album of the year at the 2019 Grammys. That soundtrack had the benefit of curation from a then-red hot Kendrick Lamar, who also appeared on several tracks (including both top 10 hits, “All the Stars” with SZA and “Pray for Me” with The Weeknd) and stitched its disparate tracks into a cohesive full listen. Lamar isn’t involved with the 19-track Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, which is built around Afrobeats hitmakers like Tems, CKay, Rema and Burna Boy. But the set is led by another veteran global superstar on Lamar’s level: Rihanna, who makes her long-awaited return to popular music with “Lift Me Up,” the set’s first single and the Bad Gal’s first new solo song in six years. The ballad, written in tribute to late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, debuts at No. 2 on the Hot 100 this week and should give Wakanda Forever an excellent head start in next week’s Billboard 200 race. Joji, SMITHEREENS (88rising/Warner): Few artists probably cursed the news of Drake and 21 Savage bumping Her Loss back a week from its initial Oct. 29 release date than Joji, who would have been a frontrunner for the highest debut in another week with his new SMITHEREENS. That’s thanks to a sizable cult fanbase and strong streaming numbers — grown over a half-decade since the artist formerly known as Filthy Frank pivoted from Internet comedy to intimate R&B — and the recent success of lead single “Glimpse of Us,” which became his first major crossover hit on the Billboard Hot 100 over the summer, hitting the chart’s top 10. IN THE MIX Russell Dickerson, Russell Dickerson (Triple Tigers): Dickerson has been a regular visitor to the top of Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, besting the tally with four consecutive singles in the late ‘10s and early ‘20s. Neither of the advance cuts from his self-titled third album reached the chart’s top level, but Jake Scott collab “She Likes It” has been one of the most enduring country songs on the Hot 100 this year, lasting 30 weeks before finally falling off this week. Billy Joel, Live at Yankee Stadium / Barbra Streisand, Live at the Bon Soir (Columbia): A pair of new Columbia-released live albums threaten to put the charts in a New York State of Mind this week, as both Joel’s 1990 set at the Bronx baseball stadium and Streisand’s 1962 gig at the famed Greenwich Village club come out on streaming and CD. (The Billboard 200’s No. 1 spot is a familiar venue for both artists, who have topped the chart a combined 15 times.) Quavo and Takeoff, Only Built for Infinity Links (Quality Control/Capitol/Motown/YRN): Cuban Links debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 dated Oct. 7 and had fallen to No. 84 as of the Nov. 5 chart. However, the set has received renewed interest following the tragic Nov. 1 death of co-creator Takeoff, resulting in a rebound to No. 12 on this week’s Billboard 200 — and possibly an even higher placement next week.

Drake & 21 Savage’s ‘Her Loss’ Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart Drake now has a dozen No. 1 albums, while 21 Savage scores his third leader.
By Keith Caulfield www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/drake-21-savage-her-loss-debut-number-one-billboard-200-album-chart-1235170474/ 11/13/202221 Savage and Drake perform during Wicked (Spelhouse Homecoming Concert) at Forbes Arena at Morehouse College on Oct. 19, 2022 in Atlanta. Prince Williams/Wireimage Drake and 21 Savage’s collaborative album, Her Loss, debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Nov. 19) with the year’s biggest week for an R&B/hip-hop set and the fourth-largest streaming week ever for any album. Her Loss launches with 404,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 10, according to Luminate. Streaming activity drove the bulk of that sum, to the tune of 513.56 million on-demand official streams of its 16 tracks. 11/13/2022 Her Loss is the 12th No. 1 for Drake and the third leader for 21 Savage. Drake now solely has the third-most No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, since the list began publishing on a regular weekly basis in March of 1956. Ahead of him are only The Beatles, with a record 19 No. 1s and Jay-Z with 14. Drake was previously tied with Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand and Taylor Swift, each with 11 No. 1s on the Billboard 200. Her Loss was announced on Oct. 22 and then-slated for an Oct. 28 release. On Oct. 26, its release was postponed to Nov. 4. The set was released via streaming services and as an album download via digital retailers. A physical release for the set on CD or any other format has not been announced. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Nov. 19, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (Nov. 15). For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Her Loss’ 404,000 equivalent album units earned, SEA units comprise 391,000 (equaling 513.56 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks), album sales comprise 12,000 and SEA units comprise 1,000. Biggest Week for an R&B/Hip-Hop Album in 2022: Her Loss tallies not just the largest week for any R&B/hip-hop set in 2022, but the biggest since Drake’s own Certified Lover Boy debuted at No. 1 more than a year ago, with 613,000 units on the Sept. 18, 2021-dated chart. Among all albums in 2022, Her Loss nets the third-biggest week by units earned, trailing only the No. 1 debuts of Taylor Swift’s Midnights (1.578 million; Nov. 5 chart) and Harry Styles’ Harry’s House (521,000; June 4). Fourth-Largest Streaming Week Ever: Her Loss captures the fourth-largest streaming week ever for an album, by total on-demand official streams of its combined tracks (513.56 million). Drake owns three of the top four biggest streaming weeks, and half of the top 10 largest weeks. The Nos. 1 and 2 biggest streaming weeks were logged by the debut frames of Drake’s Scorpion (745.92 million in 2018) and Certified Lover Boy (743.67 million, 2021), respectively. Swift’s Midnights debut is No. 3 (549.26 million, 2022) and Lil Wayne’s opening week with Tha Carter V is No. 5 (433.02 million, 2018). Nos. 6-10 are the debuts of Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys (431.34 million, 2018), Juice WRLD’s Legends Never Die (422.63 million, 2020) and Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake (400.42 million, 2020), the second week of Drake’s Scorpion (390.98 million, 2018) and the opening frame of Drake’s More Life (384.84 million, 2017). A Dozen No. 1 Albums: Drake’s even dozen No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 continues to pull him closer to Jay-Z, who has the record for the most No. 1s among solo acts, with 14. The Beatles have the most No. 1s among all artists, as the Fab Four has 19 leaders. Below is a list of every act with at least 10 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, since the list began publishing on a regular weekly basis in March of 1956. Most Billboard 200 No. 1s: 19, The Beatles 14, Jay-Z 12, Drake 11, Bruce Springsteen 11, Barbra Streisand 11, Taylor Swift 10, Eminem 10, Elvis Presley 10, Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) Taylor Swift’s Midnights falls to No. 2 on the latest Billboard 200 after spending its first two weeks atop the chart. The set earned 299,000 equivalent album units in the latest tracking week (down 13%). Lil Baby’s former No. 1 It’s Only Me dips 2-3 with 62,000 units (down 24%) and Bad Bunny’s chart-topping Un Verano Sin Ti slips out of the top three for the first time in its 27 chart weeks, as it shifts 3-4 with 58,000 units (down 8%). Joji achieves his third top 10-charting effort on the Billboard 200 — all of which have debuted in the top five — as Smithereens opens at No. 5 with 57,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 39,500 (equaling 52.95 million on-demand official streams of the set’s nine tracks), album sales comprise 17,500 and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. The set was led by the hit single “Glimpse of Us,” which became the artist’s first top 10 (and top 40) hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 8 on the July 2-dated list. Rounding out the new Billboard 200’s top 10 are Morgan Wallen’s chart-topping Dangerous: The Double Album (falling 5-6 with 41,000 equivalent album units earned; though up 1%), The Weeknd’s The Highlights (6-7 with 39,000; down 4%), Styles’ Harry’s House (9-8 with 30,000; down 4%), Zach Bryan’s American Heartbreak (11-9 with 28,000; up 11%) and Steve Lacy’s Gemini Rights (17-10 with 27,000; up 32% following its release on vinyl on Nov. 4). Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Thanks, Gary. Three albums drop 100-plus spots on the Billboard 200 this week: Michael Jackson's Thriller slides 101 spots to No. 120; Berner's From Seed To Sale plunges 153 positions to No. 173; and Smino's Luv 4 Rent drops 145 spots to No. 195.
Of note: Volume 44 of the Grateful Dead's archival live sets drops off the Billboard 200 from its debut position of No. 13.

Barbra Streisand’s Live at the Bon Soir debuts in the top 10 on both Billboard’s Top Album Sales and Top Current Album Sales charts, and arrives as her 64th entry on the Billboard 200 — extending her record for the most total albums charted among women. The archival live set was recorded in 1962 and was originally intended to be Streisand’s debut album for Columbia Records. Instead, the project was shelved and her first release for her longtime label was the studio effort The Barbra Streisand Album in 1963. (It was also her first charting album on the Billboard 200, debuting at No. 17 on the Aug. 17, 1963-dated list, later peaking at No. 9.) Live at the Bon Soir sold 7,500 copies in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 10, according to Luminate, and bows at No. 8 on Top Album Sales and No. 7 on Top Current Album Sales. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. Of Live at the Bon Soir’s 7,500 sold, physical sales comprise 5,000 (all on CD) and digital album download sales comprise 2,500. The album will be released on SACD and vinyl LP at a later date. On the Billboard 200, Live at the Bon Soir bows at No. 150, marking Streisand’s 64th entry on the chart. That extends her record for the most charting albums among women. It’s also her ninth live project to chart on the list, and she’s logged at least one charting live album in each decade from the 1960s through the 2020s. Streisand’s live albums on the Billboard 200:Title, Peak Position, Peak Date A Happening in Central Park, 30, Dec. 14, 1968 Live Concert at The Forum, 19, Jan. 6, 1973 One Voice, 9, June 6, 1987 The Concert, 10, Oct. 15, 1994 The Concert Highlights, 81, June 10, 1995 Timeless: Live in Concert, 21, Oct. 7, 2000 Live in Concert 2006, 7, May 26, 2007 The Music… The Mem’ries… The Magic! Live in Concert, 69, Dec. 30, 2017 Live at the Bon Soir, 150, Nov. 19, 2022 At No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Taylor Swift’s Midnights holds tight for a third straight week, with 93,000 sold (down 19%). In its first three weeks, the album has sold 1.348 million copies in the U.S. Joji debuts at a career-high No. 2 on Top Album Sales, as Smithereens bows with 17,500 sold. Of that sum, CD sales comprise 13,000, bolstered by its availability in a Target-exclusive variant with alternative cover art, along with an array of deluxe box sets sold through the artist’s official webstore. The Beatles’ Revolver falls 2-3 on Top Album Sales with 15,000 sold (down 68%) while the Stranger Things: Season 4 soundtrack re-enters at a new peak of, fittingly, No. 4 with 14,000 sold (up 2,067%), following its arrival on vinyl. Of that sum, vinyl sales comprise 13,000, enabling its debut at No. 2 on the Vinyl Albums chart. Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss – which launches atop the Billboard 200 – starts at No. 5 on Top Album Sales with 12,000 sold. Home Free collects its highest charting effort on Top Album Sales, and third top 10, as So Long Dixie debuts at No. 6 with 8,000 sold. Steve Lacy’s Gemini Rights bows at No. 7 with nearly 8,000 sold following its vinyl release. Nearly all of its sales for the week were driven by its vinyl LP (No. 3 debut on Vinyl Albums). Gemini Rights was released on streaming services and to purchase as a digital download album on July 15, but never sold enough to chart on Top Album Sales until its vinyl was released. It has yet to be issued on any other physical format other than vinyl. Rounding out the top 10 on Top Album Sales is Berner’s From Seed to Sale (4-9 with 6,000; down 55%) and Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (16-10 with 6,000; up 45% thanks to continued strong performance of its 10th anniversary reissue variants). In the week ending Nov. 10, there were 1.749 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 8.1% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.363 million (up 10.2%) and digital albums comprised 386,000 (up 1.3%). There were 631,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Nov. 10 (up 1.8 % week-over-week) and 720,000 vinyl albums sold (up 18.8%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 29.652 million (down 7.3% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 33.294 million (up 3.7%). Overall year-to-date album sales total 80.993 million (down 6.7% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 63.412 million (down 1.7%) and digital album sales total 17.581 million (down 21.1%).

With seven weeks left, it looks like album sales will fall short of 100 million this year, baring better-than-expected holiday sales.
Billy Joel's live album fell short of the Billboard 200.Was it higher-priced than Streisand's?

^For comparison's sake, the MRC Year-End report had 109 million pure album sales for 2021. The main culprit is the continued decline of digital album sales. It appears only three albums will end up reaching at least 400k pure sales (with BTS' Proof only 5k away according to HITS' YTD) for 2022, while there were 6 album total for 2021. Midnights' pure sales account for more than 1.6% of the totsl so far this year.
