The Contenders: Could Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ Add a 38th Week to Its Historic Run Atop the Billboard 200? Also: a new mixtape from Roddy Ricch, a new EP from Rod Wave, and two new albums from Brockhampton.

11/23/2022Welcome to The Contenders, a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming Billboard 200 albums chart dated Dec. 3): The most successful original album in Billboard 200 history celebrates its 40th anniversary by returning to the chart’s upper tier, while a pair of new sets from Brockhampton could send the group off with a bang. 11/23/2022 Michael Jackson, Thriller (Epic): Just a couple weeks ago, we were talking about Michael Jackson‘s Thriller as a factor on the Billboard 200 following its annual Halloween bump – and now, the set may once again be a threat for the chart’s top tier, thanks to a new reissue celebrating the set’s 40th anniversary. The album is available in limited-edition single LP, or as part of a two-CD set that includes a disc of unreleased demos and bonus material. This revival is practically unheard of – except for Thriller, which has repeatedly made chart history, including with a record 37 nonconsecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 from 1982 to 1984. Still, it will face stiff competition from well-performing incumbents by Taylor Swift, Drake and 21 Savage, and Bad Bunny. Brockhampton, The Family and TM (Question Everything/RCA): After announcing its impending breakup in January, rap collective and “boy band” Brockhampton teased fans with the prospect of a final album out before the end of the year. The Family came out last Thursday (Nov. 17), followed the next day by TM – a two-set farewell to the group’s fans. Brockhampton has always sold well, thanks to its devoted fan base, and it is offering box sets of The Family and signed copies of TM on its web site. The idea is to follow the success of 2018’s Iradescence, which became the group’s first (and to date, only) album to top the Billboard 200. Disturbed, Divisive (Reprise): They might not be the most obvious chart conquerors, but few artists have been as consistently successful on the Billboard 200 this century as mainstream rock stalwarts Disturbed. From 2002 to 2015, they topped the chart with five consecutive albums, a streak finally snapped in 2018 with the No. 4 peak of their Evolution. The Chicago band will look to start a new chart-topping run with this month’s Divisive, its first new album since 2018, which frontman David Draiman calls a “blisteringly angry” set inspired by the tumultuous time. The early response on radio has been positive, with lead single “Hey You” becoming Disturbed’s 11th single to top the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. IN THE MIX Rod Wave, Jupiter’s Diary: 7 Day Theory (Alamo): Florida rapper Rod Wave already topped the BIllboard 200 once in 2022, with August’s Beautiful Mind, thanks to robust streaming numbers from his devoted online following. Fans will have fewer tracks to stream on this month’s Jupiter’s Diary, since the EP only runs a scant eight tracks, including the previously released “Break My Heart.” Roddy Ricch, Feed the Streets III (Bird Vision/Atlantic): Roddy Ricch’s latest mixtape is the third installment of his Feed the Streets series, but his first since breaking through on the national stage with 2019’s Please Excuse Me for Being Anti-Social and the 2020 11-week Hot 100 No. 1 “The Box.” The set features appearances from Lil Durk and Ty Dolla $ign, and a pair of R&B/Hip-Hop Songs-charting advance tracks in “Stop Breathing” and “Aston Martin Truck.” Nickelback, Get Rollin’ (Nickelback II Productions/BMG): Disturbed aren’t the only hard rock fixtures back this week: Canadian rockers Nickelback return with its first album in five years, the heavier Get Rollin’. The band has seen its commercial fortunes fade since their ‘00s heyday, but it still has an active run of seven consecutive top 10-peaking albums on the Billboard 200, most recently the 2017 No. 5 Feed the Machine. Dolly Parton, Diamonds & Rhinestones (Sony Music Entertainment): The recently enshrined Rock and Roll Hall of Famer takes a well-earned victory lap this month with the new greatest hits set Diamonds & Rhinestones. The 23-track collection of Dolly Parton’s personal favorites spans from 1971 breakthrough “Coat of My Colors” to 2020’s “Faith” collab with dance artists Gallantis and Mr. Probz, and is available on streaming, CD and double-LP vinyl.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ Spends Fourth Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Also in the top 10: Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' returns, Rod Wave debuts & Michael Bublé brings 'Christmas' back.
By Keith Caulfield www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/taylor-swift-midnights-fourth-week-number-one-billboard-200-chart-1235176707/ 11/27/2022Taylor Swift’s Midnights spends a fourth nonconsecutive week No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Dec. 3) as it holds atop the list with 177,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 24 (down 13%), according to Luminate. Also in the new Billboard 200’s top 10: Michael Jackson’s former No. 1 Thriller returns to the region after its 40th anniversary reissue, vaulting 115-7; Rod Wave’s new Jupiter’s Diary: 7 Day Theory bows at No. 9; and Michael Bublé’s chart-topping Christmas jingles its way back to the top 10 with a 19-10 climb. 11/27/2022 The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Dec. 3, 2022-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Nov. 29. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of Midnights’ 177,000 equivalent album units earned, SEA units comprise 118,000 (down 16%, equaling 155.8 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks), album sales comprise 57,000 (down 4%) and SEA units comprise 2,000 (down 49%). Four former No. 1’s follow Swift on the new Billboard 200, as Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss is a non-mover at No. 2 (119,000 equivalent album units; down 30%), Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti is steady at No. 3 (56,000; up less than 1%), Lil Baby’s It’s Only Me is also stationary at No. 4 (48,000; down 9%) and Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album rises 6-5 (42,000; up 2%). Jackson’s former No. 1 Thriller returns to the top 10, jumping from No. 115 to No. 7 after it was reissued in celebration of its 40th anniversary. It earned 37,000 equivalent album units (up 283%). Of that sum, album sales comprise 27,500 (up 820%), SEA units comprise 9,000 (equaling 13.17 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks) and TEA units comprise 500. Thriller spent 37 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 1983-84 — the most weeks at No. 1 for an album by a singular artist. The only album with more weeks at No. 1 is the soundtrack to the film West Side Story, with 54 weeks in 1962-63. Thriller was last in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 on the June 30, 1984-dated chart, when it ranked at No. 8. During its initial chart run, its last week on the list was April 20, 1985. It didn’t return to the list until Dec. 5, 2009, when the chart began allowing catalog (older) albums to chart again. (From May of 1991 through November 2009, catalog albums were generally not allowed to chart on the Billboard 200.) For its 40th anniversary, Thriller was reissued in a variety of new configurations and formats, some with additional bonus tracks. All versions of the album, old and new, are combined together for tracking and charting purposes. Thriller has seen a few high-profile reissues in the past, including a remastered “special edition” in 2001 with previously unreleased bonus tracks and a 25th anniversary edition in 2008 with an unreleased song and new remix collaborations with Akon, Fergie, Kanye West and will.i.am. Harry Styles’ former leader Harry’s House rises 9-8 on the new Billboard 200 with 33,000 equivalent album units (up 10%). Rod Wave’s new eight-song Jupiter’s Diary: 7 Day Theory debuts at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 with nearly 31,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise a little more than 30,000 (equaling 43.32 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks), while album sales and TEA units comprise the remaining units. It’s the fifth consecutive and total top 10-charting album for the artist, and follows a pair of No. 1s in Beautiful Mind (2022) and SoulFly (2021). Rounding out the new top 10 is Bublé’s former No. 1 Christmas, which rises 19-10 with 31,000 equivalent album units (up 51%%). The set was originally released in 2011 and spent five weeks at No. 1 in late 2011 and early 2012. It has returned to the top 10 in every Christmas season since. Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published.

Sir Bublé may reach No. 2, though, depending on how far Swift drops, that may be the best his set can do.

Dolly Parton Shines With ‘Diamonds & Rhinestones’ on Top Country Albums Chart Plus, Morgan Wallen's "You Proof" matches the longest Country Airplay reign this decade.
BY JIM ASKER
DDolly Parton achieves her 48th top 10 on Billboard‘s Top Country Albums chart (dated Dec. 3) as Diamonds & Rhinestones: The Greatest Hits Collection enters at No. 4. In the tracking week ending Nov. 24, the set — released Nov. 18 — earned 19,000 equivalent album units, with 15,000 in album sales, according to Luminate.
The 23-track album includes songs released between 1971 and 2019, including 10 No. 1s on the Hot Country Songs chart in 1974-89, from “Jolene” to “Why’d You Come in Here Lookin’ Like That.” Among those leaders are her two No. 1s on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100: “9 to 5” (1981) and “Islands in the Stream,” with Kenny Rogers (1983).
The newest cut is “Faith,” Parton’s collaboration with Swedish DJ/production duo Galantis and featuring Dutch vocalist Mr. Probz. The track debuted atop Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales in November 2019, giving Parton her first No. 1 in the genre, and topped Dance/Mix Show Airplay that December.
Parton extends her record for the most Top Country Albums top 10s among women, pushing six ahead of Loretta Lynn’s 42. Parton also remains the only woman with top 10s in every decade since the list began in January 1964. Her top 10 totals by decade: 1960s – four; ’70s – 18; ’80s – 11; ’90s – five; 2000s – three; ’10s – four; and ’20s – three.
Parton has netted eight Top Country Albums No. 1s, most recently A Holly Dolly Christmas, which bowed on top in October 2020. In between that set and her latest, Run, Rose, Run debuted at its No. 4 best this March.
Parton boasts the second-most Top Country Albums top 10s among all artists, after Willie Nelson (the only other act with top 10s in seven decades), with 53. She first reached the tier with her second entry, Just Between You and Me, with Porter Wagoner (No. 8 peak, 1968).
More ‘Proof’ of a Hit Morgan Wallen’s “You Proof” rebounds from No. 2 for a sixth week atop Country Airplay (26.6 million audience impressions, down 7%). The song, Wallen’s seventh leader on the list (dating its first week on top on the Oct. 15 chart), ties for the longest reign of the 2020s, matching Dustin Lynch’s “Thinking ‘Bout You,” featuring MacKenzie Porter (starting last December), and Luke Combs’ “Forever After All” (starting in June 2021).
Since Country Airplay started in January 1990, only seven songs have led longer, with two tied with a record eight frames at No. 1 each: Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett’s “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” (2003) and Lonestar’s “Amazed” (1999).
Meanwhile, “Proof” is the first song to return to the Country Airplay apex since Chris Lane’s “Big, Big Plans” hit No. 1 on Dec. 19, 2020, and revisited the top two weeks later.
Top 10 ‘World’ View Jordan Davis banks his sixth Hot Country Songs top 10 as “What My World Spins Around” rises 12-10. The song, which he co-wrote, drew 7.7 million official streams (up 1%) and sold 2,000 downloads (up 98%) Nov. 18-24. On Nov. 17, he announced that his second LP, Bluebird Days, is due Feb. 17.
On Country Airplay, “Spins” ranks at No. 10, up by 7% to 18.7 million impressions in the week ending Nov. 27.
Davis last reached the Hot Country Songs top 10 with “Buy Dirt,” featuring Luke Bryan. The collaboration led for four weeks in January-February, becoming his first No. 1 (and Bryan’s 12th). It dominated Country Airplay for two frames, marking Davis’ third leader (and Bryan’s 26th).
Davis posted his first Hot Country Songs top 10 with his rookie entry “Singles You Up,” which hit No. 4 in April 2018, and followed with “Take It From Me” (No. 4, March 2019); “Slow Dance in a Parking Lot” (No. 6, April 2020); and “Almost Maybes” (No. 7, July 2021). “Singles” and “Slow Dance” also topped Country Airplay for a week each.

Thanks, Gary.
Nas' King's Disease III drops 106 spots to No. 116 this week, making it the week's biggest dropper. Right behind, Louis Tomlinson's Faith In The Future slides 105 spots to No. 110.
Look at the jump for Adele's 30- up 76 spots to No. 55. It jumped from 66 to 24 in sales, though streaming must have had a decent week, too.
