5. And On And On - Janet Jackson

"And On And On" was the B-side to "Any Time, Any Place". On its own, it peaked at #12 on the R&B airplay chart and #17 on the rhythmic chart. Together with "Any Time, Any Place", it reached the Top 5 on the Hot 100 and was nominated for R&B/Soul Song Of The Year at the Soul Train Lady Of Soul Awards.

4. Any Time, Any Place - Janet Jackson

The fifth single from janet., "Any Time, Any Place" was one of the longest-running R&B #1s of the year. It was later sampled in Kendrick Lamar's "Poetic Justice", which was named after the movie Janet starred in with Tupac Shakur. A remix produced by Robert was popular at urban radio.

11 of the 17 tracks (album tracks + B-sides) charted on various radio charts in the US alone and then two additional songs (Whoops Now and What'll I Do) were international singles. This Time, Funky Big Band, The Body That Loves You, and One More Chance were the only songs not to chart anywhere. Design of a Decade is an understatement for the power she held at the time.

3. I Wanna Be Down - Brandy

Born in Mississippi and raised in California, Brandy Norwood got her start singing backup for Immature, and later starred in the short-lived sitcom Thea. After signing with Atlantic Records she released her self-titled debut album. The lead single, "I Wanna Be Down", reached the Top 10 on the Hot 100.

A hip hop remix featuring Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Yo-Yo was released as the B-side to Brandy's follow-up single "Baby".



Fun fact: Brandy is cousins with Snoop Dogg and WWE wrestler Sasha Banks.

2. Back & Forth - Aaliyah

Born in Brooklyn, Aaliyah Haughton got her big break appearing on Star Search and in concerts with Gladys Knight. She was eventually signed to her uncle's label Blackground Records and became a protégé of the man named Robert. He wrote and produced for her debut album Age Ain't Nothing But a Number. The album's lead single, "Back & Forth", was one of her biggest hits, reaching the Top 5 on the Hot 100 and was certified gold. It's been sampled by the likes of Chris Brown, Tyga, and Madonna.

Aaliyah's association with Robert came to an end after it was revealed that the two had secretly married. Robert was 27 at the time, but Aaliyah was only 15. Obviously that marriage was annulled, and Aaliyah would work with Timbaland and Missy Elliott on her next album.

1. Creep - TLC

The lead single from their sophomore album CrazySexyCool, "Creep" is one of TLC's most iconic and well-known songs. Written and produced by Dallas Austin, it topped the R&B and Hot 100 charts and was named Billboard's #1 R&B single for 1995. It was nominated for three Soul Train Lady Of Soul Awards and won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Duo Or Group (and was also nominated for Best R&B Song).

The song caused a bit of tension within the group. Lisa "Left Eyes" Lopes didn't agree with the lyrical content and threatened to wear black tape over her mouth in the music video. She stood down in the end.
