Do tell, darling Rose. :)
Edit: and I say that with love, before I get told I’m baiting. I’m always curious to hear other peoples’ takes on thing, because sometimes I have blinders on and fail to see something.
I think the song is catchy, has empowering lyrics, and has a vibe that all ages can like.

I think the song is catchy, has empowering lyrics, and has a vibe that all ages can like. It's general enough that it doesn't sound particularly special, yet at the same time, it's unique enough to not be a rehash of dozens of songs that came before it (despite its reliance on the Bruno song, lol, but even that was done imo in a creative original way). But considering Miley's chart success post-Bangerz, the fact that she was able to get this song as bit as it was quickly as it happened and for as long as it did (it's still pretty high) as a non-radio darling (some might have said a pop music has-been) is impressive and yes, I'd definitely agree a surprise. It's a no brainer in hindsight because of the song itself, but leading up to it, it wasn't exactly written on the wall.

when this was first released, I doubt a single person would’ve thought it would break records like this, I think this is definitely unexpected

I guess it is pretty safe to say that it will outlast As It Was at #1 considering how stable it is. Wow. I wonder if it will be able to outlast We Belong Together and become the longest-running female song at #1.

It's absolutely mind boggling and semi-historic for a female solo artist to have a global smash this huge 16 years into her career, after nearly a decade of not scoring big hits. The only comparisons that come to mind are Cher and Tina Turner, though Flowers is much more global than What's Love Got to do With It.

It's great to see this song performing so well, but I do feel that it's ruining the chances for Miley to get another hit on this platform. The success of this song is really cannibalizing any shot she has at a follow-up hit. It looks like both River and Jaded are stalling, which makes me think this may be a one-off.
If Jaded ends up failing, hopefully she can capitalize on the momentum of Flowers in another way with a lead single of a new album not too far off from now.

If Jaded ends up failing, hopefully she can capitalize on the momentum of Flowers in another way with a lead single of a new album not too far off from now. There were rumours that she's releasing a deluxe version of the album in summer. There was an interview where Brandi Carlile indirectly confirmed a deluxe edition (or some sort of rerelease) by saying her favourite song on the album isn't out yet and will be coming out later. I'm hoping that "Jaded" will get a music video and pushed enough to become a moderate hit of its own. With maybe a live TV performances. Although I could see them letting "Flowers" do its thing with "Jaded" fading before releasing a lead single for an upcoming deluxe version of the album later in the year (when "Flowers" should have hopefully died down enough to make more room for another Miley song).

Ok Miley, time to actually promote this album. Like Jaded. Also announce a tour.

Today, Flowers surpassed Easy On Me on Kworb, spending a whopping 87 days at #1. It is very likely that it will outlast As It Was as well next week. High Hopes is next with 95 days. Then, Girls Like You (116 days).
The longevity of this song is absolutely crazy. I won't be surprised if it ends up breaking Mariah's record given that the gap between Flowers and Last Night appears to be pretty big (and Last Night seems to be stalling on top of that).
It would need to remain at #1 until the end of August to surpass Blinding Lights and become the longest-running #1 radio song ever (very unlikely, but I won't be surprised if this song keeps smashing throughout the entire summer).

How long has this been #1 on HAC and what's the record? #1 at HAC for 12 weeks . the record according to Wikipedia is 25 weeks which was Smooth by Santana. there are 15 songs which had 14 or more weeks at #1. Flowers with the gap it has could get that. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adult_Top_40

I also thought Smooth by Santana and Rob Thomas only got 23 weeks at #1 which is the record. Maybe someone else can clarify.

"Smooth" spent 23 weeks at #1 on the Radio & Records Hot AC chart, not counting the Holiday break. Casey Kasem and American Top 20 may have counted the 2 week break to come up with 25 weeks. Edit: I didn't realize it was for Billboard. They do no not take breaks over the Holidays, so it was indeed 25 weeks there.
