I'll never get what people see in Portugal. The Man. They're filed away in the same place in my brain as X Ambassadors, except this song is the only one of theirs that actually approaches being as bad as a real X Ambassadors song.

only complaint about this set so far is Wild Child beating the far superior It Ain't Over, I've been super close on pretty much every other song

MEDIABASE EXTRA This will get ranked on AAA in 2023, and I expect it to do well there, this may be one of the best Hot 100 #1s in a very long time.

I have a certain level of respect that I have to give when a band sends a Halloween themed song to radio, but we all know Ministry did this much better.

This middle era between Måneskin's first 3 songs, and their recent songs like The Loneliest and Gossip was pretty rough. I don't care for this one sadly.

More catch-up. My comments on the most recent reveals will be late tonight after my work shift.
#55. Arcade Fire - "Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)" I was greatly disappointed when this became the radio single. Then it turns out it's one of the better songs on the album. Arcade Fire seems to be starting to fall off, unfortunately, and the allegations surrounding the singer probably aren't helping the band either, especially since their material is now reeking of fake sincerity.
#54. The Maine, Taking Back Sunday & Charlotte Sands - "Loved You A Little" This is another one I was initially high on and it slipped down. It's not a bad song by any means (I would call it a good one actually) but it's a little too messy.
#53. YUNGBLUD - "The Funeral" This was better than "fleabag". YUNGBLUD seems to be on a career redemption arc tbh, "Tissues" is another improvement of his formula too.
#52. Måneskin - "Supermodel" This was overproduced and wrecked by Max Martin. I can't blame them for going for it though. It's fine enough but went out around when it should.
#51 - alt-J - "U&ME" More indie hookless garbage by the kings of indie hookless garbage. At least there's a brief burst of life near the end.
#50. Wallows - "Especially You" Generic but listenable. Can't see myself going back to it though.
#49. The 1975 - "Part Of The Band" It seems to be a tradition for The 1975 to start off every era with a faceplant. Instead of embarrassing themselves they just made something dreadfully boring instead.
#48. The Lumineers - "BRIGHTSIDE" Hell must have frozen over because I was the highest ranker of a Lumineers song. Holy crap. But yeah, I actually like this one a lot; it's got some Kings of Leon vibes and rides the post-punk train convincingly but with indie rock reflection on top. It's by far the greatest song by them I've heard, and I'll give them credit for making something I genuinely enjoyed for a change. And most importantly, NOT BORING.
#47. twenty one pilots - "The Outside" I liked this one a lot, it has some fun new wave-y tones and then transitions to more traditional TOP to wrap things up. These guys continue to make pretty good music and I hope they can keep it going, even though they seem unlikely to reach the heights they once had.
#46. Ripe - "Settling" This was one of the more unique songs on the list. Indie rock and jam band mesh together again but in a more cohesive way than the most similar-sounding song on this list, "Clarity". Not bad.
#45 - The Regettes - "Monday" They can do much, much better than this.
#44. Phoenix - "Alpha Zulu" Some good ideas here but the chorus is awkward af and forced the much lower rank than I would have liked. The rest of the album is much better than this thankfully.
#43. The Interrupters - "Raised By Wolves" Not their best. Their whole album is a couple steps down from their last couple. Just a bit generic-sounding now.
#42. half.alive - "Move Me" I fell in love with this song, not gonna lie. The crescendo, the unusual time signature, the guitars, all of it combined to make something uniquely appealing to my ears. They made something special with this song in my opinion. I feel like this got tanked for the singer having similar tones to the AJR singer and the Christian undertones (yes, the song is the singer talking to God). Unfortunate, because this is a genuinely great song, and not what I expected to hear from a group I've usually called "AJR if they were competent".
#41. Rex Orange County - "Keep It Up" Now this is genuinely "AJR if they were competent". The nasally vocal and some of the overall genericness dragged this one down, but it's listenable. Not something I think I'll ever come back to, though.
Extras:
The Anxiety - "Meet Me At Our Spot" I'm probably getting old but I don't get the love for this one. It's alright mind you but I just don't hear what made this a beloved summer anthem.
The Arcade Fire - "The Lightning I, II" Better than "Unconditional I" but it reeks of fake sincerity and compassion given recent events and accusations. I pulled it from my YE 2022 list and I honestly don't know where I'll put it if I'm asked to rank it.
Bakar - "Free" He's done much better than this.
Whole Damn Mess - "Some Big Something" So this was what listening to Alt in 2013 felt like. It's okay for what it is, I guess, but I forgot this existed until now.
Harry Styles - "As It Was" A modern classic by Harry, even if he is cribbing from the Dayglow playbook more than a little. I'll elaborate with more if I submit to AAA this year.
Papa Roach - "No Apologies" Honestly this is pretty damn good butt rock with an uplifting message. I'll say more for Active.

Scattered thoughts since all these reveals have passed me by today:
40. Chapstick - A #100 for this??? At the same time though, I guess I could understand why. It's still such a shame though since I've come to like this one for its punchy groove and interesting sound. 39. Scared Together - And there goes my first top ten. I've never been huge on Silversun Pickups, but this song rips hard, that much I can say. 38. How Dare You Want More - Arguably the best single from an otherwise very disappointing Bleachers album. Be thankful that I wasn't around for the 2021 rankdown, because I would've tanked "Stop Making This Hurt" very hard. 37. It Ain't Over - I didn't expect The Black Keys on autopilot to make it this far, but here we are. 36. Talking to Ourselves - Rise Against, on the other hand, I think are still capable of putting out great hits despite sticking to the same sound. 35. Wild Child - Better than "It Ain't Over," but still not impressive enough for my standards from this band. 34. Black Summer - And there goes another song on my top ten. On the surface, it is just another RHCP song, but I like the throwback sound its got going for it while the lyrics and themes have touched on me in some unusual way. 32. Virginia (Wind in the Night) - I thought this would go out earlier, but I think this is pretty much the best single I've heard from the band to date, so I guess I can't complain. 30. Giants - Yeah, this is definitely a Walk the Moon song. 29. Love Dies Young - R.I.P. Taylor Hawkins, but the Medicine at Midnight album was still very mid. My thoughts on the song in question are the same regardless of the loss. 28. What, Me Worry? - "What, me worry?" Portugal. The Man said upon recycling their biggest hit for their newest radio single in a while only to be unable to recapture that same lightning in a bottle. Yeah...I'm sorry, but I didn't think this was worth the wait. 27. In the Mirror - The best Interrupters single of the year, enough said.

decent song but matty healy is probably the most likely person in a current alt staple band to end up like the hed pe guy circa 2011 tbh

#40. COIN - "Chapstick" A popular Internet band without much luck on radio. Can you believe that this is their second most successful radio song? Neither can I. They're capable of far better than this repetitive junk.
#39. Silversun Pickups - "Scared Together" Another near-miss for my YE top 50. Unlike other near misses, this wasn't due to it being high and slipping, it's mostly stayed consistent for me. It's a step up from their last era, but it's not at the same level as their best material. But this has some neat ideas, such as the mid-song tempo change, that make this one an interesting and lively song to listen to. Honestly I kinda wish it had managed to scrape the top 10.
#38. Bleachers - "How Dare You Want More" The album was crap and so is this song.
#37. The Black Keys - "It Ain't Over" Another reliable band that had a noticeable drop-off in quality. This song and the band don't suck by any means, but the "wow" factor is gone. This is still a decent track, mind you. But The Black Keys just don't set the world on fire anymore unfortunately. Considering how it inexplicably flopped, I think Alt is starting to get tired of them too (Wild Child lingering for almost half a year probably didn't help either).
#36. Rise Against - "Talking To Ourselves" This is Rise Against doing Rise Against things pretty damn well. "I never wanted to disturb the peace but it feels like no one is listening" is a killer line. I completely get how their formula is wearing thin for some though, because they've only evolved their sound and not revolutionized it.
#35. The Black Keys - "Wild Child" The Black Keys giving us the full band experience should have been better than this. But this song comes out a bit uninspired and spawned a worrisome indicator for the near future that the album itself fulfilled. This isn't a bad song by any means, it's honestly decent just like "It Ain't Over" but my expectations weren't met for this one.
#34. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Black Summer" A somber offering by RHCP that never completely landed with me. Thankfully much better songs than this were to come. It's surprising to note that this is the longest-lived song of theirs on the Alt chart by far. It would have hit #1 on the year-end if "Enemy" hadn't kept holding on for so long.
#33. The Wombats - "If You Ever Leave, I'm Coming With You" Solid effort by the British indie perennials. Nothing world-shattering but overall a decent product.
#32. The Head and the Heart - "Virginia (Wind in the Night)" Solid enough song and the standout of a mediocre album. Also a surprise flop for the band on a chart they had dominated for a couple of eras. Still not sure how that happened.
#31. Wilderado - "Head Right" Excellent song by a newcomer to the format. If you're going to make a good first impression put your best foot forward and that's what Wilderado did. On an album filled with slower and more pensive indie rock, they cracked out a true alternative rock anthem with elements of powerpop and roots rock to craft one of the highlights of the year IMO. I'm looking forward to seeing what else they can do, and I hope their next album comes with a couple more bangers like this.
#30. WALK THE MOON - "Giants" This was... okay. Generic and uninspired but passable radio and playlist filler.
#29. Foo Fighters - "Love Dies Young" Low-key surprised that this was the best received Medicine At Midnight single by Pulse. I can see why, though. Instead of simply Foo Fighters doing Foo Fighters things like "Waiting On A War" or trying to party rock like "Making A Fire", it's more experimental and layered, with contemplative lyrics and Dave Grohl restraining his urge to shriek for a urgent yet melodic vocal performance. For what is likely Taylor Hawkins' final performance on the drums, this was a good way to go out on.
#28. Portugal.The.Man - "What Me Worry?" They've done much better than this. Maybe the reason why there's no follow-up to this yet is because they failed to make the long wait for new material worth it and they're going back to the drawing board.
#27. The Interrupters - "In The Mirror" TBCH, I was probably too harsh on this song when I ranked it. It's an obvious attempt to try to make the "She's Kerosene" lightning strike twice, though. It just rubs me the wrong way even though there's nothing technically bad about it.
#26. Culture Wars - "Faith" I don't know how this band does so well on radio despite being signed to a small label and some suspicious YouTube numbers (though they get some comments so they do have a fanbase of some kind). That being said, they have talent, and this is a pretty decent song. Solid hook and a decent atmosphere throughout.
Extras:
Steve Lacy - "Bad Habit" Like "As It Was", probably one of the best Hot 100 #1s to come by in years. I wish this had done better on Alt, not gonna lie. Lacy is a perfect fit for the format.
Muse - "You Make Me Feel Like It's Halloween" This is total musical chaos. I can't call it "good" but I can call it "fun".
Papa Roach - "Kill The Noise" Kinda neat that something like this made Alt. Also neat that after several years in a dark age and a horrific lead in "Swerve" that this came along and kicked copious amounts of ass. More thoughts when Active comes around.
Snail Mail - "Valentine" I will never understand why Matador let this potential smash slide through their fingers. This had some momentum with no push whatsoever and they just... did nothing with it.
Måneskin - "MAMMAMIA" This song was a mistake to release after "Beggin'". Absolutely killed their momentum. There's nothing wrong with it, but this gave the impression of a band not ready for the spotlight, when the actual Rush album showed better preparedness, superior musicianship, and far less awkward English than this one.
