i didnt have any backups but i almost sent a different song on accident while i was drunk. only like two of the judges probably would've loved it while the others would've put it in the 5-7 range most likely

Is that a high low?!? I’m scared Speaking from experience, normally a 7 is a good thing because it means you didn't totally flop, but this early with a double elimination and no previous scores to go off of, that 7 could easily be a nail in the coffin

== ROUND 1 - RESULTS ==Welcome to the first elimination ceremony. By the end of today, only 14 of you will remain in the competition and 2 of you will be eliminated.
Without further ado, the FCO for this round is…
FILTHY!Lianne La Havas - "Weird Fishes"
Our runner-up from last season is showing the taste level here. The judges all agree this is a great song! Your lowest score is only a 9.0! Congratulations for winning the very first round of the competition!
Gates: "Imagine having the ability to take one of Radiohead's best songs and make your own version worth listening to. G-Eazy can't relate! The beat fake-out intro and the mid-way vocal harmony solo are two golden moments, and not the only ones in this song either." (9.0) APM: "I really love this! I feel like the transition from the first half to the second was pulled off really well." (9.4) Wrip: "Hey, I’ve judged this before! Absolutely beautiful cover, Lianne can do no wrong." (9.8) Samo: "Talented. Brilliant. Incredible. Amazing. Showstopping. Spectacular. The original is one of my favourite Radiohead songs already, but this is on a whole other level. It might just be my favourite cover I’ve ever heard." (9.9) Will: "This is how you do a cover. I adore the original, but this really does give it a run for its money. The second half of this is just magical. Love hearing the soulful vocals over rocky instrumentation." (9.5) Hamed: "Lianne is truly such a really beautiful artist between her writing, instrumentals, and vocals that I cannot help but love everything she makes and this cover of the already great Radiohead track is no different. I love the neo-soul spin on her interpretation and I honestly think it makes for one of the rare times where the cover outclasses the original." (9.5) JUDGES: 57.1 | ROLEPLAY: 0.4 WEEKLY SCORE: 57.5
The second best is…
JUGG!The Beatles - "Strawberry Fields Forever"
Very impressive start! This is a great way to start off your comeback season!
Gates: "Obviously The Beatles were some of the most important and skilled musicians ever, but the way their songs touch the human soul is why people still care about them. What this song means to me is a refuge from depersonalization and hopelessness, a space I can enter whenever I want where society's absurd restrictions don't bind me." (9.0) APM: "I wasn’t big on this when I was younger but hearing this again today, it hits me so much harder. Thank you for letting me give this another chance lmao." (9.8) Wrip: "Undeniably a classic! Psychedelic music is super cool." (8.6) Samo: "Weird mixing issues with the 2009 remaster aside, this is one of my favourite Beatles songs. I particularly love the drums here. This song’s influence can’t be denied, but even outside of that it’s great." (8.4) Will: "To be consistently praised as the greatest band of all time and not even be overrated, you have to make some fairly outstanding music, i.e. this." (9.7) Hamed: "I've never been a major Beatles fan but this is easily one of my favorites from them, truly one of the most influential psychedelic pop songs of all time." (8.8) JUDGES: 54.3 | ROLEPLAY: 2.0 WEEKLY SCORE: 56.3
The third best is…
MOD!Cocteau Twins - "Cherry-Coloured Funk"
You seem to show already what makes you a winner 2 seasons ago. Keep this good work up!
Gates: "This song is nothing but beauty. I feel weightless, like I'm in the clouds, at peace and nothing can touch me." (9.8) APM: "A great chill bop." (8.5) Wrip: "Not *as* good as HOLV but still really good. Very dreamy which I like." (8.7) Samo: "This was one of my favourite discoveries of this set; it’s no Heaven or Las Vegas but I really enjoy this sound, maybe I should check out the rest of the album." (8.6) Will: "My favourite Cocteau Twins song, continues to be the gold standard for dream pop over 30 years later. The lushness of both Fraser’s vocals and the instrumental create a mood few songs have achieved. I’ve also always loved how the title evokes the sound of the song, this really is what cherry-coloured funk would sound like." (9.8) Hamed: "I do need to get into more from Cocteau Twins since I love all the artists they have basically inspired and this is a really lush pretty discovery that reminds me again why I need to do a deep dive one day." (8.6) JUDGES: 54.0 | ROLEPLAY: 2.0
WEEKLY SCORE: 56.0
Next…
312999!Prince - "Raspberry Beret"
Gates: "This was my #2 in his Pulse Pop Top 10s, so what did you expect? this fusion of baroque/psychedelic pop and R&B is pure bliss, and Prince's singing...well, he says it himself: baby, he's the most!" (10) APM: "I might be a little biased because I grew up in Minnesota, but I’ve always loved Prince. This is no exception." (8.8) Wrip: "Just an overall amazing song." (9.2) Samo: "It’s absolutely a classic, but Prince has better imo. There’s literally nothing wrong with it, I just don’t return to it often at all." (8.8) Will: "Timeless classic, one of Prince’s finest." (9.1) Hamed: "Another classic this time from the late Prince, it just never fails to be such a fun jam and I'm a Janelle stan so it kinda is illegal for me to not love Prince by default lol." (8.7) JUDGES: 54.6 | ROLEPLAY:0.8
WEEKLY SCORE: 55.4
Next…
REPUTAINBOWTove Lo - "Grapefruit"
Gates: "Tove never goes far outside her zone musically but every so often she constructs a tune that stands out just enough from the rest of her work. However, the lyrics are the highlight here; I can't think of many songs that portrayed an eating disorder more thoughtfully that this." (8.0) APM: "Tove Lo has an amazing voice and I hate myself for ever letting myself forget about her music. This song has great lyrics and production too." (9.2) Wrip: "Haven’t heard this before but possibly maybe potentially my favorite from the album of what I remember." (7.9) Samo: "I was worried I wouldn’t be that big on Dirt Femme after I was underwhelmed by the lead singles but this slaps. We love a body positivity anthem with non-cringeworthy lyrics." (9.1) Will: "Haven’t really gotten into this era of Tove Lo like others on pulse but this is probably my favourite of the songs I’ve heard, I think the production is a step up." (7.5) Hamed: "One of the highlights off Dirt Femme, I just love the thumping synth production that is present from the very start of the track of this upbeat number about body positivity that feels raw and personal without coming across as your everyday empowerment anthem, truly powerful relatable stuff for me." (9.2) JUDGES: 50.9 | ROLEPLAY: 2.0
WEEKLY SCORE: 52.9
Next…
DECADEVIASweet Trip - "Chocolate Matter"
Gates: "This chord progression feels like it was made especially for me; it cascades down the folds of my brain like a waterfall. The rumbling, perfectly meshing electronic and organic tones are just the icing on the cake." (9.3) APM: "This is certainly a cool sound but I wouldn’t say I love it." (7.5) Wrip: "The distortion of the guitar/production really sets this song apart. Truly a killer sound." (9.0) Samo: "I’ve found it hard to get into most of Sweet Trip’s music that I’ve heard. This is definitely one of their better ones imo, I really like how it builds at the end with the [assorted noises] piling on top of each other." (8.0) Will: "I don’t love this album like others do but this is probably the 2nd best song from it and I think one of the best early examples of their sound. The noisier elements really work well here." (8.6) Hamed: "I have heard this one before and I can say it did grow on me but I'm still not in love with it but I am more so embracing the sound this go around." (7.8) JUDGES: 50.2 | ROLEPLAY: 2.0
WEEKLY SCORE: 52.2
Next…
WALTEcho & The Bunnymen - "Lips Like Sugar"
Gates: "One of an inconsistent band's big highs. The rhythm section locks in so McCulloch can lay down a seductive majesty of a vocal and the guitar and piano can dazzle with out-of-control flights of fancy." (8.4) APM: "This bops. Very good vocals and a memorable chorus." (8.8) Wrip: "good music, I can see it growing on me 😌" (8.5) Samo: "I feel like I should like this more than I do lol. It sounds nice enough, I just don’t think I’ll ever want to return to it after this." (7.5) Will: "80s alt rock goodness." (8.3) Hamed: "I've heard of this band but have not heard much from them but this is a very fun slice of 80s new wave executed perfectly, what a great discovery and definitely is another artist I have to add to my only ever growing list of artists to do a deep dive for one day." (8.5) JUDGES: 50.0 | ROLEPLAY: 2.0
WEEKLY SCORE: 52.0
Next…
LEORobyn - "Honey"
Gates: "One of the few post-2000s Robyn tracks I don't think is overrated. Dark but danceable and texturally daring beat meets mysteriously alluring vocals." (8.0) APM: "I really like this. The production especially slaps imo." (8.0) Wrip: "Robyn has a way of making just really good pop music. This isn’t even my top song from her or anything but it’s still really solid." (8.1) Samo: "that’s hot." (9.0) Will: "Grew on me after this relisten, absolutely love the way the production builds. I don’t find Robyn a super interesting presence, but she has a nice voice that compliments the song well." (8.4) Hamed: "I really love how this track just builds from the slow opening and then your hit with this really nice ambient esque deep house bop, it isn't one of my favorites from Robin from Sweden but it still is a bop." (8.4) JUDGES: 49.9 | ROLEPLAY: 2.0
WEEKLY SCORE: 51.9
Next…
MAXMariah Carey - "Honey"
Gates: "The song feels very casual, it's like Mariah's saying "yea I've done this type of easy-going love song before, I can do it again no pressure, I'm just that hot". I would be more on board but I think the song is missing a lot with the lack of bass." (7.1) APM: "I can’t say I find this extremely memorable but it’s good." (7.6) Wrip: "If we’re talking r&b songs called Honey, then I would’ve rated Kehlani’s song a bit higher but this is still really good! I haven’t found myself seeking out Mariah’s music often but she is talented for sure." (8.3) Samo: "I’ve always loved this one, but it’s not an absolute favourite from Mariah for me. Most of the time I think she sounds better belting than whispering but for the latter this is as good as it gets; the beat is phenomenal." (8.9) Will: "I feel like there’s only so much I can add about Mariah Carey on pulse music board dot com but I’ll say I think this is one of her best singles and I love the production." (8.3) Hamed: "A true bonafide classic that we all know (and should love), Honey truly has not aged a day for me and still is a divine bop that deserves its praise everytime." (9.5) JUDGES: 49.7 | ROLEPLAY: 1.2
WEEKLY SCORE: 50.9
Next…
DREMOLUSTyler, The Creator & A$AP Rocky - "Potato Salad"
Gates: "A nice subversion of the "Knock Knock" beat. The music feels built for kicking back on a warm sunny day, but originally Monica sang about a rough breakup over top. Now Tyler and Rocky use it to shoot the s**t and trade silly punchlines. They feel like they're past proving themselves to anyone. I kind of thought this was underwhelming when it came out (considering the same duo made the more aggressive song "Who Dat Boy" a year before), but I've come back to it more lately." (8.2) APM: "A catchy vibe. (7.7)" Wrip: "Both Tyler and A$AP are 2 of my favorite rappers. They work really well together on this track!" (8.6) Samo: "I’ve heard this for a few different rankdowns now, and it gets better with every listen. I do think it’s a little overrated, but I definitely get its appeal more than I did in 2019." (7.6) Will: "Kills me that we’ll seemingly never get the Wang$ap project that was teased after this, Tyler and Rocky have amazing chemistry and this beat is so smooth." (8.7) Hamed: "A classic from these two who are easily some of the best in the industry, absolutely just love the vibe of the song and it never fails to be such a fun vibe." (8.7) JUDGES: 49.5 | ROLEPLAY: 1.2
WEEKLY SCORE: 50.7
Next…
NAOMIDeftones - "Cherry Waves"
Gates: "The band chemistry is a true marvel, every measure resonates into the next almost as if guided by the divine. The mix of sweet and sour will leave you thinking about this song long after it's over." (9.0) APM: "I really dig this, especially that outro." (8.7) Wrip: "I can’t think of anything to say about this right now except that it’s good!" (8.1) Samo: "Whoever sent Deftones when they know I’m judging is…brave, but I actually quite liked this! I normally can’t get into John Deftones’ vocals but I don’t mind them here, and the instrumental is as solid as in a lot of their other songs." (7.2) Will: "This one is not peak Deftones to me, but B-tier Deftones beats most other artists’ best work anyway. I do enjoy the more mellow sound of this one compared to a lot of their other releases." (8.5) Hamed: "Another artist I need to do a deep dive for, I really like the vibe of this track and I love the duality in that it explores the intensity of love and the exploration of death through the analogy of a cherry colored wave." (8.4) JUDGES: 49.9 | ROLEPLAY: 0
WEEKLY SCORE: 49.9
Next…
ADRIANMigos - "Stir Fry"
Gates: "Pharrell Williams doesn't always seem inspired, but when he is, he boggles my mind with his ability to combine few and disparate elements into a slammer of a beat that feels like magic at work. In the same fashion, the Migos don't always seem like they care about what they put on their beats as long as it's catchy, but here, every member is bringing their A-game." (8.8) APM: "Very catchy. I don’t *love* it but I was happy to see it get sent because I have good nostalgia for it." (8.2) Wrip: "I slept on this a bit too hard in 2018, a certified bop I fear. I’ve been jamming to this quite a bit recently though, it’s especially good for working out." (8.5) Samo: "For what it’s worth this is probably my favourite song from Migos. The beat is really interesting, but some aspects are kind of annoying." (7.4) Will: "I love Culture 1 and I think it was a very important album in the late 2010s, but it’s also nice hearing the Migos on some genuinely surprising production like this. Of course, it could sound awkward and mismatched in the hands of a lesser producer and lesser rappers, but Pharrell and Migos make it work, combining for one of the best songs of both artists’ careers. Also, the hook and the verses from Offset and Takeoff deserve a mention." (8.4) Hamed: "Another song here that is good but I'm personally not super into it but then again I'm not really into much from Migos. This is easily though among the best if not is the best I've heard from them. It's a fun song if it comes on but I won't really go out of my way to hear it." (7.3) JUDGES: 48.6 | ROLEPLAY: 0.4
WEEKLY SCORE: 49.0
The last name to escape the bottom three is…
BIG2000Drake - "Passionfruit"
Gates: "a serene atmosphere lays the stage for probably the best melodies I've ever heard on a tropical house song, both instrumentally and vocally. Drake's singing isn't exactly smashing but he does enough for you to get the picture." (8.1) APM: "Definitely one of Drake’s better sounds. Revisiting this takes me back to one of the best times in my life when I loved this a lot more." (9.1) Wrip: "Easily one of Drake’s best songs. Such a low key banger and one of my favorite 2017 hits." (8.4) Samo: "I don’t really get why this is talked about as one of Drake’s best singles; it’s fine and the beat is pretty nice, but it doesn’t need to be 5 minutes long, and the first minute is especially unnecessary." (6.1) Will: "A great single from Drake, one of my favourite hits in recent years and a good selection for this challenge. Drake’s not the greatest singer in the world but I do enjoy when he does." (8.4) Hamed: "This was always a fun pleasant vibey track but I never particularly was into it that much at any point." (7.0) JUDGES: 47.1 | ROLEPLAY: 0.4
WEEKLY SCORE: 47.5
Which means the bottom three is…

Last person to advance to the next round is... JAMES!DREAMCAR - "Kill For Candy"
Gates: "I keep going back and forth on this song. Sometimes I think it's pretty generic, but other times I love that opening riff and the euphoric manner in which the whole song is delivered too much to care" (7.4) APM: "This admittedly doesn’t stick out to me much but I don’t mind it." (6.5) Wrip: "Apparently I heard this for TOTC 2017 alt haha. It’s pleasant enough but I don’t feel myself wanting to return to it a crazy amount." (7.4) Samo: "This was a great discovery! It feels very maine-core, but that’s a sound I usually enjoy, and this is no exception." (8.5) Will: "One of the first songs I remember Pulse loving that I hadn’t heard anywhere else. I don’t have a heap to say about this one, it’s a nice listen but I didn’t get into it as much as others here." (7.6) Hamed: "This is a pretty fun discovery though it doesn't standout too much to be but it still is an enjoyable listen." (7.5) JUDGES: 44.9 | ROLEPLAY: 1.6
WEEKLY SCORE: 46.5
Which means...
FIRE, I'm sorry but you've been eliminated.
Neil Diamond - "Cherry Cherry"
Gates: "Diamond really did have his keepers. They're just buried in popularity by his duds nowadays. This is a nice and simple little jaunt that clearly calls to mind a recipe of rockabilly groove and Merseybeat harmonic brightness." (7.3) APM: "This is decent but I can’t say I’ve ever been a fan of it tbh." (6.4) Wrip: "This kind of falls into the category of “I respect it more than I enjoy it”. It’s good music but again not something I want to actively listen to." (7.5) Samo: "lol what’s with all the “Cherry” songs here? (and why are none of them Rina’s???) I love the piano line, but the rest is just decent to me." (7.4) Will: "I have to admit I’m largely unfamiliar with Neil Diamond aside from Sweet Caroline, thankfully this song is a lot better than that one. It’s got a pretty simple 60’s pop rock sound but I am a big fan of that style and I think Diamond does it quite well." (7.8) Hamed: "I've never been super into Neil Diamond but I respect him and his legacy, this is a fun nostalgic track but its again not something I'd seek out on my own." (7.4) JUDGES: 43.8 | ROLEPLAY: 1.2
WEEKLY SCORE: 45.0
----------
AVATAR, I'm sorry but you've also been eliminated.
Lana Del Rey - "Cherry"
Gates: "I guess this era was when she tried to nod toward hip hop/alt-r&b the most? That's what I'd assume from the sound of this song (particularly the percussion) and the album's features list. Sometimes the downfall of her songs is predictability, and I don't feel that issue comes up here. It's more just the lack of drive or development behind the ideas that leaves me a little cold. (6.0)" APM: "Not sure if I see myself coming back to this but it’s pretty good." (7.2) Wrip: "Kind of feels like an album filler LDR song but it’s nice enough." (7.3) Samo: "Ok this one’s kind of fun. My favourite food-related Lana song is definitely “Cinnamon girl” but this wasn’t bad. I very much appreciated the “Cola” energy she brought with the outro." (7.3) Will: "(Cinnamon Girl was right there). This one is pleasant enough but not super memorable and the instrumental isn’t great." (6.5) Hamed: "This is one of the better cuts from Lust For Life which is personally one of my least favorite Lana records but I think Lana had much better options in Cinnamon Girl Cola, or Diet Mountain Dew." (7.7) JUDGES: 42.0 | ROLEPLAY: 0.8

The way Lana had 3 other options that were better: Cinnamon Girl which is top 5 off her best album NFR Diet Mountain Dew which is a fun cut from her other best album BTD And then my pussy tastes like cherry Cola which is so camp!
