Anyway, as much as Keith Urban's career has taken a nosedive the last 10 years, I've actually been pretty happy with him this year! "Wild Hearts" and "Brown Eyes Baby" have been easily his strongest 1-2 punch since at least "Cop Car"/"Somewhere In My Car" for me!

Very thankful "Something In The Orange" is out. Not only is the song itself horrendous to me, but Zach Bryan has some of the worst vocals I've ever heard. Even if I loved the song, his voice is one I'm not sure I could look past to be able to enjoy it. "5 foot 9" is really bad and I can't take the song seriously, I mean dude got his wife's height wrong it is just an all-around tragic song, lol. I legit almost put "Songs About You" below Zach Bryan, but as far as I'm concerned they're both equally terrible songs and vocal performances. "Don't Come Lookin" being out hurts, but I'm glad it made it into the top 50! A fantastic country-rock song, and Jackson Dean's voice is dope af.

If I ran the world, Zach Bryan would become the Dean Dillon to Charles Wesley Godwin's George Strait. My daughter is a big fan of ZB but I guess I'm just to old. (I mentioned before I like some of his other songs better)
I think Jackson Dean is a modern day... Travis Tritt(?) with the mix of country and southern rock. (Tritt may not be exactly right but he's best I can come with).
Hubbard, Eldridge and Urban, just not a fan of. (Also, T. Hub's wife is 5' 10".)

I'm a little surprised "Don't Come Lookin'" managed to do this well. Pulse has a pretty limited tolerance for this more "Southern Gothic" vibe, and the fact that Jackson Dean is a nobody with nothing else to really compare his output to, I figured this wouldn't be nearly this well-received. It'll probably keep growing on me, but personally this one doesn't hit as hard as "Holy Water" in this same rankdown. I would say it was placed in the exact, right, correct spot.

Like, "not bad" would be a sentence to end up in the 60s/70s for most artists that have his background of bro-country blandness. It would make sense if his music was genuinely revolutionary, like Jason Aldean suddenly doing well with "If I Didn't Love You" last year. His bro-country era is just one album only. Do most people lump him with other bro-country bros? If I Didn't Love You did well because of Carrie Underwood, and he already did similar sounds called Don't You Wanna Stay.

I like Keith Urban more than most on this board but “Wild Hearts” is just…there. It’s not bad. It’s not good. It’s just a song. I honestly forget how it even goes, despite listening to it in full at least 20 times.

Don't Come Lookin'>>>Holy Water I feel Jackson Dean has vocals like some indie male country rock artists like Cody Jinks. I don't think he technically sings well but it legit sounds badass, especially considering his age. But nope, of course Pulse would love generic vocals instead.

I knew SITO would go well before top 10 but this early? C'mon Y'all! Also wow I lost so many top 20s this section EDIT: And *Wow* I didn't see there being so much hate for Joy of My Life, which while simple yes is still a great execution of its concept.

Great round with both Zach Bryan and Jackson Dean going out. Yikes these both got way too high.
Do not get the appeal of Zach in the slightest - he’s not bad but nothing about his voice or music makes me want to revisit it. I knew some people would have it high so it would last awhile but Jackson Dean making it this high is quite a shock to me. Sounds like something we’d collectively all dislike and go out in the bottom 20 😂

I highly doubt Pulse got "Holy Water" higher because they prefer Michael Ray's voice over Jackson Dean's

50: “5 Foot 9” is a nice song but I’ve kinda burned on it lately due to overplay.
49: I love “Songs About You”! The vibe of this song just hits right for me. Shame radio didn’t play it more!
48: “Something In The Orange” grew on me a TON throughout 2022! At first I thought it was too stripped down and wasn’t a fan of his voice but the vulnerability of it really helped throughout the year and I’ve started to really love this one. Still haven’t found another Zach Bryan song I enjoy in the same way though…
47: Great song! Not sure how many hits Jackson will have but I’m glad this was a hit.
46: A fine Keith Urban song. Still listen to his 2000s stuff a lot more than his recent music though.

I think "Songs About You" was a happy medium between the introspective part of Sunday Drive and radio friendliness. With that song not doing anything, I think he's done on radio but I feel like he's happy with where he is and honestly as a long-time fan if this is the direction he wants to go in, I fully support it. Sunday Drive and Songs About You were definitely his best works to date (the former is his best imo) and I love the quality he's been serving.
I wonder if any song has been this divisive in a country year-end rankdown, and I feel like Zach Bryan will continue to be divisive if he were to appear in any future renditions. I liked "Heading South" which went to AAA radio sometime back but didn't fully get into him until last year. I don't go back to the entire album because it's so long but it has a nice amount of gems that I like going back to like "Tishomingo", "Heavy Eyes", "Billy Stay", and "Oklahoma City". I also love that he's been bringing more attention to Charles Wesley Godwin with CWG featuring in "Jamie" in the Summertime Blues EP and bringing CWG as the opener for his tour.
I actually prefer "Fearless" to "Don't Come Lookin'" but DCL is pretty good too and I wonder if he'll have more hits, I wouldn't mind his swampier (?) style sticking on radio.

As we kick off the final stretch of songs to miss the top 40, we say goodbye to our second-to-last Canadian song. "The Last Time" by Tenille Townes was a top 5 hit in Canada last year, but I know several of us think it should have been released in the U.S. too! This is one of those country songs that just perfectly touches on emotions relating to the sentiment that you never know when something is going to happen for the last time, such as hanging out with your grandpa, etc. so you'd better enjoy it while you can. Tenille sells the sentiment well, and I'd like to think she could get a hit in the U.S. eventually if she keeps putting out quality material like this (and actually pushes it to radio). I personally think "Girl Who Didn't Care" or "When's It Gonna Happen" would have been even better for U.S. radio, but alas she released none of them despite them all being quite successful in Canada.
Lindsay Ell now has the final remaining Canadian release with "Right On Time".

I always forget how much I love the chorus of "Note To Self"! The verses are definitely not quite as catchy. I mean, they do try to hook you with descriptive and emotional lyrics for sure, but the chorus is always a LOT more engaging than I expect after hearing the verses! Either way, it's nice to see Randy Houser coming back with quality material and getting a moderate hit with it in 2022. This placement feels about right. Although gardyfan is probably not too happy with his #1 leaving!

The Last Time is a well-written song, and glad it made it to the top half. I hope she will try again on the US radio, but also glad that she's been continuously successful up here in Canada, winning Juno Award with her album.

10/10 song writing, 2/10 melody, so 6/10 for me. It grew on me a lot due to the story-telling.

To me "Holy Water" hits the sweet spot with the dark Southern-Gothic vibe. That sound is always super polarizing on Pulse, but this is probably my favorite example of it in recent years. I even like this one more than "God's Country"! And overall this seemed to be more liked than hated considering it was nearly a top 40 contender. Also, Michael's vocal is quite a bit more engaging imo than it ever was on any of his early stuff. He should definitely prioritize his country twang, because he has a voice that is much better-suited for it than you would expect based on some of the hits he has released!

Idk how this deserves bottom 5s but at the same time I didn’t think it would make it that far anyways, thought more like 60s.

“Holy Water” is one of the few songs from Michael Ray that I just love. The dark vibe in the production and the storytelling are incredible imo. Glad to see it get as far as it did here.
