2022 Country Rankdown (Revealing!)

Hello! It is time for yet another annual year-end country rankdown! As per usual, this playlist is based on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, with duplicates from last year removed as well as songs that I feel still have a chance of being bigger hits next year (my discretion is not perfect, but I basically excluded anything that is currently charting for 20 weeks or less. I was able to include songs outside of the top 100 thanks to CoJoFan 's Billboard Year-To-Date thread, so I was able to guarantee that I didn't miss anything that has charted this year (other than also excluding a few Christmas songs and album cuts). Plus of course in keeping with the tradition that began last year, we have taken the top 5 songs from 🌺CountryLineDancer 's 2022 Canadian Country Rankdown (which is actually top 6 this year since there was a tie for #5). Finally, I also consulted the Hot Country Songs year-end chart to make sure I didn't miss anything that had a ton of hype even if it wasn't an airplay hit.

I just went back and looked in the Billboard thread, and it had only been on the charts for 6 weeks as of the update that contained the year-end charts. So yes, I must have cut it figuring it would be a safe bet to spend more time on the charts in 2023 than it did in 2022.

As long as it charted this year (which it has), it will be on my radar to include in 2023!

Reminder time!!! This has been open for like three weeks now, and I only have like 5 lists... Submitted my list earlier this week and this is probably my most polarized year for country music looking back, the good stuff is really good and regular listens for me (probably Top 30 are all songs I actively enjoy) but man the bottom of my rankings are not good songs at all imo (if anyone knows me in these rankdowns you should have an idea of who are probably occupying my near bottom slots). 

It doesn't help a lot of stuff I liked that made year end charts for 2022 were on 2021 Country Rankdown ("Half Of My Hometown", "Drunk AIDWGH", "Thinking Bout You"). But I am still excited for when this starts.

Just submitted the list! Another strong year and I liked most of the songs as usual for this series. Looking forward to the result!

1-3 Masterpiece: I would remember these after 50 years.
4-34 Love It: On my heavy rotation
35-65 Great: I'd often seek out and listen to it.
66-85 Solid: I could seek out sometimes, good songs to be on a playlist regardless
86-99 Okay: I'd not always skip but kinda boring.
100-106 Pass: Tolerable but not enjoyable.
107-110 Trash: Trash

It's flopping because you excluded the #15 year-end Hot Country Songs smash "All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version) (From the Vault)! I'm working on it though.

Lmao I actually heavily considered it! But, Billboard doesn't list is as the 10-minute version on the year-end chart??



The main reason I cut it was because I decided we didn't need to rank the carbon-copy re-recordings of her pre-existing songs. Like it made total sense for us not to rank "Love Story" the last couple years, and I figured the same logic applied to "All Too Well". I would have probably leaned more towards keeping it if the charts had made it clear that it was the 10-minute version!

Billboard does list it as "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)" but most of its chart points came from the 10 minute version (it outsold and far outstreamed the 5 minute version and then airplay was basically non-existent on this one). I do see your point about ranking her pre-existing songs too though, granted "Love Story" was a single in its original form and we ranked it in the 2008 rankdown whereas "All Too Well" was never a single. I guess this does raise a question about if Brett Young's "You Ain't Here To Kiss Me" were to be pushed after "You Didn't" peaks since it is also a re-recorded version (but if it receives a radio push and charts, I think we should include it) but we can cross that bridge when we get there!

I just realized Kip Moore's re-recorded "Crazy One More Time" is in this year's rankdown, so that pretty much answers that, lol. In my mind the difference between that and something like "All Too Well" is the official single push!

That being said, I would not be opposed to adding "All Too Well" if people want it. It was definitely one of the most important viral moments in the country industry last year, and as radio continues to lose importance I think it is important to recognize those viral moments. And I only have 12 lists, so it's not like we're at anywhere close to what we normally finish with! The majority have yet to submit!

This all the way. It may have a less country production but it’s essentially the unabridged version of a song that was originally released as country, on a mostly country album. And as has been pointed out, it was actually a single this time. “Easy On Me” has nothing going for it except for Chris Stapleton singing the entire song alongside Adele’s original vocal. And it was terrible.

Lol...I only used that as an example because of both Adele and Sunny's songs having "Easy" in the title. But along with that, I just feel so far removed from mainstream country radio these days as much of what I digest comes from Texas/Red Dirt country. Given that, to my ears songs like Wade Bowen's "Everything Has Your Memory" and "Where Phones Don't Work", "John Wayne" by Whiskey Myers, and yes even Sunny's "Easy As Hello" were all just as big if not bigger hits in the indie country music scene as some of those included for the year-end for 2022.
