That's right, hip hop turns 50 this year. What began at a house party in The Bronx in 1973 turned into a global phenomenon. I'm planning on doing a multi-part series highlighting some of the biggest and best of the culture over the last half century. This first part will focus on the early years of hip hop, from the '70s through the end of the '80s. Here are the 50 songs we'll be ranking: 2 Live Crew - Me So Horny Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force - Planet Rock Audio Two - Top Billin' The Beastie Boys - The New Style Big Daddy Kane - Ain't No Half Steppin' Biz Markie - Just a Friend Boogie Down Productions - The Bridge Is Over Dana Dane - Nightmares De La Soul - Me Myself & I Divine Sounds - What People Do For Money DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Parents Just Don't Understand The D.O.C. - It's Funky Enough Doug E. Fresh & The Get Fresh Crew - The Show Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde - Genius Rap EPMD - You Gots To Chill Eric B. & Rakim - I Ain't No Joke The Fat Boys - Jail House Rap The Fatback Band - King Tim III (Personality Jock) Funky 4 + 1 - That's The Joint Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Message Heavy D & The Boyz - Somebody For Me Ice-T - Colors J.J. Fad - Supersonic Kid N' Play - Rollin' With Kid N' Play Kool Moe Dee - How Ya Like Me Now Kurtis Blow - The Breaks LL Cool J - I'm Bad MC Lyte - Paper Thin N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton Public Enemy - Fight The Power Queen Latifah feat. Final rankings will use an inverse point system. You may rank whichever version (single edit, remix, etc.) you prefer Submissions are tentatively due February 24. Tagging those who might be interested, but as always anyone can participate!

I learned about almost all these songs in my hip hop class last semester (although already knew most of them but just went more in depth) so definitely in.

Had no idea hip hop was around that long! Thought it started with The Sugarhill Gang in 1979.

This looks great! I don't know all of these, but what I do are classics. I love the Message, but where's White Lines? I'm not even going to mention Sugarhill Gang's Apache... Looking forward to this one!

Slight change in the list: I swapped out "The Symphony" for "It Takes Two", so if any of you are currently working on your list, please take note.

Freedom - Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
="Get Up And Dance" by Freedom might be my favorite sample...from the original song to Grandmaster Flash's version to SWV's "Anything" Remix to 95 South's "I Tell U What".....that riff makes me shake my shimmy EVERY. TIME!

Hands down, Me So Horny is gonna win!
Hip-hop/rap is a genre that I could consider myself a fan of depending on the style. Yet, I have had trouble evaluating and ranking rap songs at times and ended up feeling stressed over it. So I’m not sure if I will submit a list for this (it will be in February if I do) but I will at least give the playlist a listen since I recognize several songs that I enjoy.

I don't think I will do this one but if 90s or 2000s versions come out in the future then I am in for sure. I'll follow along.

White Lines would have been my 1 for sure, no contest, one of the best 80s rap songs ever, so great that a part of it was sampled by Lets Dance by David Bowie 2 years later.
It's Like That would have also been very high for me, love that Jagged Edge did a sample on it for a remix of Let's Get Married.

Sent my list! That was fun to go through. There were more songs than I thought that I didn't recognize. But then there were some songs I didn't know by title but knew once I listened to them, haha. Then there were of course those classics I knew and grew up listening to and loving! All in all a fun mix of songs. Looking forward to how this rankdown goes!

Basketball would have been high for me. Also like the cover that Bow Wow did as well in the early 2000s.
