38. Funk You Up - The Sequence

Formed in Columbia, South Carolina, The Sequence consisted of Cheryl The Pearl (Cheryl Cook), Blondy (Gwendolyn Chisholm), and Angie B, who we know better as Angie Stone. "Funk You Up" was the first rap song released and first charted single by a female group, peaking at #15 on the soul chart in 1980. It was later sampled in Organized Rhyme's "Check The O.R." and was interpolated in Dr. Dre's "Keep Their Heads Ringin'".

Angie Stone would later join the group Vertical Hold before finding her greatest success as a solo artist.

In 2017 The Sequence sued Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars for copyright infringement, claiming that their song "Uptown Funk!" used elements from "Funk You Up".

From West Philadelphia, "DJ Jazzy Jeff" Jeffrey Townes and "The Fresh Prince" Will Smith scored their breakthrough hit in 1988 with "Parents Just Don't Understand". It peaked at #10 on the soul chart and #12 on the Hot 100, and was the first song to win a Grammy for Best Rap Performance. Contains a sample of Peter Frampton's "Won't You Be My Friend?"

36. The Bridge Is Over - Boogie Down Productions

Formed in NYC, Boogie Down Productions consisted of KRS-One (Lawrence Parker), D-Nice (Derrick Jones), and DJ Scott La Rock (Scott Sterling). Their debut album Criminal Minded was released in 1987. One of the album's songs, "The Bridge Is Over", was actually an answer song to "The Bridge" by The Juice Crew, in which the lyrics were misinterpreted as claiming that hip hop originated in Queens. It resulted in what would be called The Bridge Wars, as members of The Juice Crew released songs attacking BDP, but the war was short lived.

Sadly, DJ Scott La Rock was murdered just months after Criminal Minded was released, and KRS-One began to focus more on socially conscious hip hop.

The duo of "Dr. Jeckyll" Andre Harrell and "Mr. Hyde" Alonzo Brown scored their biggest hit in 1982 with "Genius Rap". It peaked at #31 on the soul chart and was one of a slew of hip hop songs that sampled Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love".

Alonzo Brown would later become a producer and screenwriter and was executive producer for the Judge Mathis show. Andre Harrell would later found Uptown Records. He passed away in 2020.

Formed in Brooklyn, Audio Two consisted of Kirk "Milk Dee" Robinson and Nat "Gizmo" Robinson. They're best known for their 1987 song "Top Billin'". It's been sampled in over 300 songs, most notably "Real Love" by Mary J. Blige, "We Trying To Stay Alive" by Wyclef Jean, and "I Get Money" by 50 Cent.

Milk Dee would later produced the Eamon hit "F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)".

Born in Brooklyn to an Afro-Jamaican father and an Indo-Jamaican mother, Edward Archer broke through the hip hop scene in 1989 with the release of the single "I Got It Made". From his debut album Youngest In Charge, it peaked at #9 on the rap chart and #18 on the soul chart. Samples Ripple's "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky".

32. Request Line - Rock Master Scott & The Dynamic Three

Formed in The Bronx, Gregory Wigfall (MBG), Charles Pettiford (Charlie Prince), and Richard Fowler (Slick Rick) were originally known as The Devilish Three. With the addition of DJ Mark Scott (Rock Master Scott), the group name was changed to Rock Master Scott & The Dynamic Three. Their biggest hit came with the 1984 release of "Request Line". It peaked at #21 on the soul chart and was later sampled in Missy Elliott's "Work It".

Note: the Slick Rick in this group is NOT the same Slick Rick who performed on "The Show" with Doug E. Fresh and later had the hits "Children's Story" and "Teeenage Love".

Formed in Harlem, The Treacherous Three consisted of Kool Moe Dee (Mohandas Dewese), LA Sunshine (Lamar Hill), Special K (Kevin Keaton), and DJ Easy Lee. They're best known for their 1980 song "The Body Rock", which was later sampled in Mariah Carey's 1997 hit "Honey".

29. Self Destruction - Stop The Violence Movement

The Stop The Violence Movement was made up of a collection of East Coast rappers. It was formed by KRS-One after a fan was killed at a show headlined by Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy in the hopes of ending violence within the hip hop community. In 1989 they released the single "Self Destruction". It peaked at #30 on the soul chart and was the first #1 on the rap chart, staying there for 10 weeks. It raised over $100,000, all of which was donated to the National Urban League. Samples "Funky Drummer" by James Brown, "Pass The Peas" by The JB's, and "Heaven And Hell Is On Earth" by The 20th Century Steel Band.

Some of the rappers on the song include Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Public Enemy, Doug E. Fresh, and Heavy D. The music video also features appearances by West Coast rappers Tone Loc, Young MC, and Shock G of Digital Underground.

28. Paper Thin - MC Lyte

Born in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, Lana Moorer was the first solo female rapper to release a full-length album, 1988's Lyte As a Rock. One of the album's singles, "Paper Thin", is generally considered one of the greatest hip hop songs of all time. It samples "17 Days" by Prince, "I'm Glad You're Mine" by Al Green, "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind & Fire, and an interpolation of Ray Charles' "Hit The Road Jack".

27. How Ya Like Me Now - Kool Moe Dee

After The Treacherous Three went their separate ways, Kool Moe Dee embarked on a solo career. He broke through with the release of his second album, 1987's How Ya Like Me Now. The title track, which he wrote and produced with Teddy Riley, was his first to hit the soul chart, peaking at #22.

"How Ya Like Me Now" is considered a dig at LL Cool J. LL responded with the track "Jack The Ripper".



And that prompted a response from Kool Moe Dee, "Let's Go".
