Hello everyone and welcome to the 2023 Predictors Cup!

Last year, during a particularly contentious Hot 100 thread, I thought it would be a fun idea if we could actually “bet” on the Hot 100 - artists, songs, and general trends. From there, the Predictors Cup was born! The first year went super well, and so I wanted to keep it going for 2023.

How to Play

• Toward the end of each week, I'll pose a few questions about the Hot 100 - sometimes about the following week, and sometimes longer-term
• You'll have through Thursday to post your answers - predictions close at 11:59pm US Eastern Time on Thursday night!
• Correct predictions will be awarded points based on how many people guessed each option

How Points Work

• Answering every question for a week automatically earns you 10 participation points
• Correct guesses will earn you 10/(% of correct predictors) points
  
  • i.e. if 100% of people get it right, each gets 10 pts for an easy question
  • but if only 20% get it right, each gets 50 pts!...keep that in mind as you make guesses
• Sometimes we’ll do different questions (like “Predict the Peak” for rising songs) - the points will be explained in the post
• I’ll keep track of points and update you all every few weeks on who’s in the lead!

Last year, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” peaked the week before Christmas with 48.7M streams (it drew 46.90M the week of Christmas). This year, Christmas falls on a Monday rather than a Sunday, which adds an extra day of Christmas-week streams. How many streams will Mariah earn in her peak week this year?

Q1: Pick 3
Recently, the chart has been dominated by longtime stars. Beyonce, Drake, Taylor - these are artists we've been talking about for years. As we've seen however, things can very suddenly get shaken up out of nowhere. Like Lil Nas X's instant success, or Olivia Rodrigo smashing streaming records. The charts are predictable, until they aren't. So let's see how good you all are at predicting who will have a big year! For this question, you need to select any 3 artists who you think will do well on the Hot 100 in 2023!
For this question, your 3 picks will accumulate points throughout the year - think of it like a fantasy league! Here's how the points will work:

• +50 Points - For every song by your artists that hits #1
  
• +10 Points - For every additional week at #1
• +20 Points - For every song by your artists that hits the Top 10
  
• +10 Points - For every song by your artists that hits the Top 40
• +5 Points - For every song by your artists that hits the Top 100
  
• Songs that are charting as of the 1/28 chart will not earn points - so "Flowers", "Anti-Hero", "Kill Bill", etc. are not eligible to earn you points
• Holiday songs which charted in 2022 are not eligible either
• This has the potential to be worth a TON of points, so choose wisely!

The sampling craze reached full strength last fall, as it seemed like song after song was released which repurposed old hits. In total, there were 7 Top 10 songs from July - December 2022 which contained samples from old hits: "Staying Alive", "Super Freaky Girl", "Hold Me Closer", "Vegas", "Circo Loco", "I'm Good", and "Creepin." Will the trend continue into the new year?

Q3: 10 Week #1s
The last few years have consistently seen 1 super long-running #1 hit per year. Will the trend continue in 2023?

• In 2019 LNX's "Old Town Road" broke the record with 19 weeks at #1
• In 2020, Roddy Ricch's "The Box" held at #1 for 11 weeks
• In 2021, BTS's "Butter" held at #1 for 10 weeks (or good 4 u, if you're not a digital sales fan)
  
• In 2022, Harry Style's "As It Was" held at #1 for 15 weeks

We've seen quite a stretch of k-pop success on the charts over the past few years. But in 2022, 2 big things happened: BTS is now officially on long-term hiatus, and Billboard has significantly down-weighted digital sales. Still, there's some hope for the future as k-pop continues to grow and expand its influence. For one, NewJeans, who released music for the first time last year, has been blowing up on streaming even in the US. Last week, they charted on the Hot 100 for the first time. Also TWICE is releasing more English singles, maybe a play for more worldwide success. Will some other k-pop group step in to fill the gap left by BTS?

Q5: Rap #1
Something weird has happened with rap on the charts over the past few years. In the mid 2010s, pop music started to seem more downbeat and lifeless. In its place, rap began to flourish on the charts. Powered by memes, SoundCloud, and a wave of new artists, rap took over the Hot 100, and many thought it would be the future of popular music. The last couple of years have somewhat discredited this theory though. The only rappers getting hits are the established superstars, while many of the newer names have fallen off. The best way to succeed as a rapper seems to be leaning into pop influences. Will the trend continue - or will rap's influence continue to dwindle on the charts?

I'll open up the predictions!

1) My 3 artists will be:
Olivia Rodrigo - I think she'll drop her follow up album in the second half of the year. It's going to be huge no matter what, and I expect every song to chart.
Taylor Swift - She hasn't gone a year without a big release since 2018, and I think that'll continue with another Taylor's version later this year.
Lil Nas X - It's a big question if he wants to release more music, especially after Montero's singles held on well into 2022. But I've noticed a lot of his Tweets going viral as of late. Wouldn't be surprised if he was getting ready for more music...

2) No - I think the sampling trend has been pretty played out. There was a viral Twitter post last month on "I'm Blue" where everyone was laughing at the laziness of the lyrics. Even if you like the melody, the songwriting is awful. So, I'd say the GP is starting to tire of really shameless samples.

3) Yes - I think every year needs a major smash. No clue where it will come from though.
3b) Olivia Rodrigo - IDK, justice for good 4 u? Sure why not!

4) Yes - I think NewJeans' recent success is a sign that k-pop is growing in mainstream acceptance in a big way. Gen Z seems much less likely to care whether a song is in all English, as long as it sounds good. I also think there will be a mini "arms race" to replace BTS as the "international k-pop group." But, equally likely is one of the BTS guys release a solo project that blows up. Either way, I think this is likely to happen.

5) No - I think rap needs something new and exciting to make a comeback on the charts. For a bit I thought it might be Playboi Carti's sound, but that hasn't quite caught on and Carti seems reluctant to release anything to build off the momentum of his last project. Also, I think 2023 is the year Drake finally takes a break from releasing new albums. I could very easily be wrong on that though.

1) Taylor Swift (probably will release another TV album this year alongside the Eras tour happening)
2) J. Cole (expected to release his final album at some point this year, which should dominate the top 10 in its first week)
3) Zach Bryan (viral traction should continue throughout 2023, maybe another project on the horizon that could get big too)

Q2: Samplemania
No. It appears that the trend was mostly confined to the second half of 2022. There will still be a few outliers that chart anyway, but I doubt too many are going to reach the top 10 in the future.

Q3: 10-Week #1's
Yes. If not Flowers, then definitely some other huge smash that hasn't charted/been released yet.
(To be clear, I am technically predicting Miley will achieve this feat)

Q4: K-Pop
No. We'll still see several songs from the genre chart throughout the year, but unless they're willing to get a Pop push out of the gate and/or work with a much bigger artist that will get them the attention, this probably will not happen. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong, though.

Q5: Hip-Hop #1
No. Mainstream hip-hop has just not done enough to keep their sound fresh and exciting since the beginning of this decade. Subgenres that were thought to have potential like drill and rage just have not caught on properly, and even established artists like Drake struggle to stay at #1 for more than a week. If anything, I think R&B and pop-rap will continue to thrive while the "urban" hip-hop sound is still in a period of flux.

1. Taylor Swift - They’ll probably push another one or two singles once Lavender Haze peaks, and I can see at least one of them doing well.
2. Miley Cyrus - I have a feeling her next era is going to be massive.

3. Yes, there’s always at least one long-lasting big hit each year.

5. No, rap music just isn’t as big as it used to be and there aren’t as many artists that are willing to mix it up. I think there will still be plenty of popular rap songs, but very few of them will have the momentum to be a big hit.

Olivia and Dua are set to start new album cycles soon, both of which I think will be big successes. Drake will surely release some sort of project this year that will dominate the chart for at least a couple weeks. I was tempted to say Taylor, but I don't foresee the next TV producing anything super chart dominating unless it's the 1989 TV. Miley is also a wildcard, but I'm a little cautious about Flowers, an ineligible track, will be the bulk of success from her upcoming era. J. Cole is another wild card because he could release this year and dominate. Then there's also artists like Doja, Billie, and Lil Nas X who could drop at any point and see success. The three I chose seem to be the safest bets. (Now watch Dua not release this year and Olivia flop or something lol.)

2. No. We'll see a few, I'm sure, but not 7.

3. Yes, and I actually think it's gonna be Flowers with a Shape of You style run.

R&B seems to be becoming a new powerhouse on streaming, and due to it being more accessible for pop and AC radio, they'll have longer reigns and will be able to keep the rap hits from spending much time at the top (or even reaching the top).

that's right! any song that's charting right now can't net you any points. this is because it would be too easy to pick Taylor or SZA or someone and get a bunch of guaranteed points.

Good point, it's not entirely clear in the question. I will say, if it's charted before but is not presently charting, it WILL count. So if Taylor pushes another single off Midnights that isn't charting as of 1/28, it would count.

1. The 3 artists for me are:

Olivia Rodrigo - This might be the obvious choice but there’s no doubt that her comeback will be a huge one.

Dua Lipa - Coming off huge from her last era had to have created some hype as I think she’s just bubbling under to be a fully fledged A list pop star and if this next era does just as well as Future Nostalgia then it’ll be certain.

J Cole - Someone has mentioned earlier that his final album is near and regardless if it is or not, it’ll most likely do really well anyways. Hopefully this will give him that long awaited #1 he has been creeping up on since he’s been able to do album bombs in the top 10. Starting from 4YEO in 2016 with just 1, then KOD in 2018 with 3, then Off Season with 4, I think with this pattern of it consistently climbing up can make this next album do 5 or 6 top 10 debuts including one of the songs hitting #1.


2. No, maybe at the max 5 songs but besides that i think sample heavy hits could be on the decline.

3. Yes, i think there will be a huge streaming hit just like As It Was but maybe not to that extent. Flowers seems like a good contender but something tells me it’ll just cut a little short of 10 weeks to maybe the comebacks of Olivia or Dua, or even if someone like Rihanna decides to properly drop something either for or after the Superbowl.

4. No, unless if it’s like a K pop artist featuring on an established artist’s song or something I don’t think we will get a crossover hit from that scene.

5. No, there might be a possibility of someone big like Travis Scott releasing or as mentioned before, J Cole getting his first #1, but they probably wouldn’t be multi week #1’s to begin with. I think this year will be handed over mostly to Pop and R&B as we are seeing right now.

Let's goooooo! This year is starting off so crazy that I can already tell this game is gonna be even more fun than last year.

1. Olivia Rodrigo, Zach Bryan, and Miley Cyrus - Olivia Rodrigo herself confirmed she's dropping this year, and considering she charted a whole album for a month last time, she's a super safe bet. Zach Bryan's stock is rising up and up, and with Something in the Orange finally getting radio traction, I think the floodgates are open for his next releases to also get country radio play. Considering how often he releases music, one of them is bound to catch on. I sense Miley Cyrus having a run this year similar to Harry Styles from last year. Sure I miss out on the points from the biggest hit, but there'll be a few other extra hits lingering just below it, like Late Night Talking did. And of course, I bet the whole album will chart on release day.

2. Yes - I was gonna say no at first because seven is a lot, but if the criteria is just that the old "hit" had to chart on the Hot 100, to the point where Circo Loco counts, then I think we'll get a few fluke album cuts or whatnot that add up to that.

3. Yes, Miley Cyrus - I mean you just laid out that every recent year has had a #1 hit with that many weeks...

4. Yes - BTS was STILL able to notch one week at #10 last year with a random Snoop Dogg collab that no one cared about, even with the new sales rules in place. I bet they or Blackpink could pull off just one more week in that area with the same tactic, especially if they get fans to care even a little.

5. No - This really depends on Billboard not being dumb with what they allow to chart on Hot Rap Songs lmao

Yup, Flowers would count. Anything from Jan-Dec 2023!

1. a) Olivia Rodrigo - she confirmed she'll release this year, and it's all but certain she'll smash with something!
    b) Taylor Swift - odds are she'll continue her highly prolific output as of recent into this year, and her stuff of course tends to do well
    c) Dua Lipa - I don't think it's been confirmed, but she's also due to release this year, and she's one of the most successful pop girls out there
        now and in her prime, so the odds are in her favor.

2. No. I would say somewhat likely if it were till the end of the year, but much less likely only through June.

3. Yes. It's also worth noting that every year since 2013 has had at least one song spend 10+ weeks at #1 (some with more than one song), so this is highly likely!

3b. Miley Cyrus

4. Yes. The genre is still a substantial force, and there are many artists showing more organic growth now.

5. No. I agree rap seems to be losing steam a bit (though it's still big), and this is a little tough because all it could take would be one or two outlying hits to buck the trend, but I'm gonna go with no.
