These days, I'm always impressed when a radio station does anything outside of playing it's standard playlist day in and day out. It's rare, but sometimes it does still happen.
This weekend, a local radio station is going out of its way to raise money for the Asian tsunami relief effort. For a pledge of $25, they claim they'll play any song you request. Naturally, I was doubtful, but I've been following their playlist on yes.net all morning.
This station, whose normal format is "classic hits", has been playing everything from country songs to 50's oldies to unreleased album tracks mixed in with its regular songs.
Too bad stations have to wait for special occasions before trying something different...

Too bad stations have to wait for special occasions before trying something different... The former WTYX in Jackson, MS did something like that last spring. They were raising money for the children's hospital there and for a pledge, they would play want you want to hear. They were also classic hits at the time. It was weird hearing Faith Hill and Whitney Houston on a classic hits station. Speaking of being different, the same station did do something different by changing to Jack a few months ago.

WAEV/Savannah is doing something similar. A request-a-thon...pledge money for the relief fund, they'll play whatever you want. They've played Tamia, Metallica, Shania Twain...lol.
Edit: They just played "Pony" by Ginuwine! Major points!

ideally, it's a really good thing. but they should put their (donated) money where their mouth is and play WHATEVER the listeners request. i know someone that requested any song by a certain artist for payment, and they just laughed, refused to play anything by that artist, and lost the money.
