The Contenders: Will P!nk’s ‘Trustfall’ Land Her at No. 1? The veteran pop star sent her last three albums to No. 1, but will have to soar without some of her previous safety nets.
www.billboard.com/pro/pink-trustfall-billboard-200-number-one-the-contenders/ BY ANDREW UNTERBERGERWelcome to The Contenders, a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming charts dated March 4), as SZA’s SOS goes for its 10th week atop the Billboard 200 albums chart, she’ll have to fend off pop’s most acrobatic veteran star, as well as hitmakers from the country and dance worlds. P!nk, Trustfall (RCA): While P!nk used to be one of top 40’s most ubiquitous figures, she hasn’t reached the Billboard Hot 100’s top 40 since 2017 and her most recent lead single, “Never Gonna Not Dance Again,” has so far toppedout at No. 99. Still, two decades of being a household name — and more recently, a stadium-level touring draw – ensure that P!nk remains a major threat on the Billboard 200. She’s topped the chart with each of her last three albums, most recently 2019’s Hurts 2B Human. Trustfall will, however, be P!nk’s first album release since the 2020 elimination of ticket bundles from Billboard 200 calculations – sure to affect the first-week numbers for such a top-flight live draw. Helping to make up the sales difference will be the multiple options for physical purchase via P!nk’s webstore, including a limited -edition T-shirt box set, and a “zine-pak” including a CD. Jordan Davis, Bluebird Days (MCA Nashville): Since Jordan Davis’ 2018 debut album, Home State, he has become one of country’s preeminent hitmakers on both radio and streaming, with four Country Airplay No. 1s and two entries on the all-genre Streaming Songs chart. Both of those latter hits are found on Davis’ sophomore album, Bluebird Days, as well as the currently rising Billboard Hot 100 single “Next Thing You Know.” Bluebird is available for sale in a variety of physical packages on Davis’ webstore. Skrillex, Quest for Fire / Don’t Get Too Close (Owsla/Atlantic): Skrillex has been one of the most visible dance artists of the last 15 years, just about everywhere except the Billboard 200. Until last week, he’d only released one full-length album, 2014’s No. 4-peaking Recess. But after dropping Quest for Fire and then, as a surprise, Don’t Get Too Close on Saturday, that number of LPs has tripled for the no-longer-bespectacled superproducer. Both releases came in the midst of a live Skrillex performance blitz in New York – alongside big-name collaborators Four Tet and Fred Again.. — with three surprise gigs at smaller venues (including one “pop-up rave” out of a converted school bus) leading up to the trio’s much-anticipated Saturday night performance at Madison Square Garden, where Close was first announced. The albums are currently streaming, but only available for physical purchase through preorder on the Atlantic webstore, with CDs set to arrive in March, cassettes in April and vinyl in July. IN THE MIX Taylor Swift, Lover – Live (Republic): Taylor Swift never got to properly tour behind her 2019 album Lover before the pandemic hit, but before heading out on her Eras Tour, she’s giving fans a taste of what might have been with this live set, taken from her one-off “City of Lover” Paris concert that September. Don’t bother searching for it on Spotify or Apple Music, though – Lover – Live was only made available for limited purchase (on heart-shaped double vinyl) via Swift’s webstore, and already looks to be sold out. Big Scarr, The Secret Weapon (1017/Atlantic): Signed to Gucci Mane’s 1017 label, Memphis rapper Big Scarr looked to be one of the decade’s rising stars before his death from a prescription drug overdose at age 22 in December. This month, his too-brief legacy is continued with the release of posthumous album The Secret Weapon, a 17-track effort featuring appearances from Gucci, Pooh Shiesty and Key Glock.

SZA’s ‘SOS’ Makes It 10 Weeks at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Plus: P!nk's scores ninth top 10-charting album as "Trustfall" arrives at No. 2.

02/26/2023SZA’s SOS enters even more rarer air, as the set collects its 10th nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated March 4). Since 2010, only eight albums have notched at least 10 weeks atop the list, including SOS. The last to do so was Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti, with 13 nonconsecutive weeks in 2022. The last album by a woman with 10 weeks at No. 1 was Adele’s 25, with 10 nonconsecutively in 2015-16. In the latest chart’s tracking week, ending Feb. 23, SOS earned 87,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. (down 7%), according to Luminate. Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200, P!nk claims her ninth top 10-charting effort, as her latest studio album, Trustfall, lands at No. 2. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new March 4, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (Feb. 28). For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of SOS’ 87,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 23, SEA units comprise 86,000 (down 7%, equaling 118.39 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks), album sales comprise 500 (down 21%) and TEA units comprise 500 (down 8%). The last R&B/hip-hop album with at least 10 weeks atop the list was Drake’s Views, which 13 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 (May 21-Oct. 8, 2016). SOS has the most weeks at No. 1 for an R&B/hip-hop album by a woman, or an R&B album by a woman, since Mariah Carey’s self-titled debut spent 11 weeks, all consecutively, at No. 1 in 1991. (Honorable mention to the Whitney Houston-led soundtrack to The Bodyguard, which logged 20 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 1992-93. The 12-track album has six songs by Houston and six songs by other artists.) SOS has the most weeks at No. 1 for any R&B album since The Bodyguard’s 20-week reign. (R&B/hip-hop and R&B albums are defined as those that have hit or are eligible for Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top R&B Albums charts, respectively.) P!nk’s Trustfall debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, giving the star her ninth top 10-charting album. The new effort, her first studio release since the chart-topping Hurts 2B Human in 2019, bows with 74,500 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 59,000, SEA units comprise 12,500 (equaling 16.61 million official on-demand streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise 3,000. Trustfall was preceded by the single “Never Gonna Not Dance Again,” which marked P!nk’s 30th hit on the Pop Airplay chart, 19th top 10 on the Adult Pop Airplay list and 35th entry on the Billboard Hot 100. Five former No. 1s are next on the Billboard 200: Taylor Swift’s Midnights (a non-mover at No. 3; 54,000 equivalent album units earned, down 11%), Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villains (6-4; 47,000 units, up 7%), Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album (4-5; 44,000 units, down 1%), Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti (5-6; 41,000 units, down 7%), and Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss (a non-mover at No. 7; 38,000 units, down 6%) round out the top seven. Zach Bryan’s American Heartbreak climbs 11-8 with 28,000 equivalent album units earned (down 6%), while Rihanna’s chart-topping ANTI falls 8-9 with 27,000 units (down 24%) and Harry Styles’ former leader Harry’s House dips 9-10 with 27,000 units (down 19%). Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. An asterisk for Michael Jackson who probably would have achieved this after his death if the Billboard 200 had allowed his catalog albums to chart then:

www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/pink-trustfall-debut-number-one-billboard-top-album-sales-chart-1235268184/P!nk’s ‘Trustfall’ Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales ChartBy Keith Caulfield 02/27/2023 It's her 10th consecutive, and total, top 10-charting set on the list. P!nk scores her third No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated March 4) as her latest studio effort, Trustfall, bows atop the list. The set sold 59,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending Feb. 23, according to Luminate. Overall, Trustfall marks P!nk’s 10th consecutive, and total, top 10-charting effort on the tally. She first visited the top 10 with her second studio album M!ssundaztood in 2001 and has reached the top 10 with every charting release on through Trustfall. Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart: ATEEZ’s Spin Off: From the Witness re-enters the chart at No. 3 after a new Target-exclusive edition of the album was released, Taylor Swift’s official webstore-exclusive vinyl album Lover: Live From Paris opens at No. 5 and Twenty One Pilots’ Vessel re-enters at No. 8 – its first time in the top 10 – after its release in a 10th anniversary vinyl boxed set. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. The new March 4-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Feb. 28. Of Trustfall’s 59,000 sold, physical sales comprise 28,000 (22,000 CDs and 6,000 vinyl LPs) and digital album sales comprise 31,000. The arrival marks the largest sales week for a digital album since Taylor Swift’s Midnights sold 161,000 digital albums in its first week (on the chart dated Nov. 2, 2022). At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s former leader The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION is a non-mover with 22,000 (down 22%). ATEEZ’s Spin Off: From the Witness re-enters the chart at No. 3 with 21,000 (up 1,232%) after a new Target-exclusive edition of the album was released on Feb. 17. The Name Chapter debuted at No. 2 on the Jan. 14 chart, spent six weeks on the list, and then left the tally after the Feb. 18 chart. Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Midnights is stationary at No. 4 with 14,000 (down 18%) while her new Lover: Live From Paris debuts at No. 5 with 13,500 sold. The set was sold exclusively through Swift’s official webstore and only available on vinyl. It also starts at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart – marking Swift’s ninth leader on the tally. She continues to have the most No. 1s among all artists on the 12-year old chart. Paramore’s chart-topping This Is Why falls 1-6 on Top Album Sales in its second week, selling 12,000 copies (down 74%). Tyler, the Creator’s former leader IGOR rises 9-7 with nearly 9,000 (up 38%) as it continues to profit from newly released physical format variants. Twenty One Pilots’ Vessel visits the top 10 of Top Album Sales for the first time as the album re-enters at No. 8 with 7,000 sold (up 1,031%). The album was issued for its 10th anniversary in a limited edition vinyl boxed set sold exclusively through the band’s official webstore. Nearly all of the album’s sales for the week were on vinyl, and Vessel re-enters the Vinyl Albums chart at No. 5. Rounding out the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart are Rihanna’s former No. 1 ANTI, climbing 18-9 with 6,000 (up 26%, following a Target-exclusive red-colored vinyl release) and Harry Styles’ chart-topping Harry’s House, dipping 5-10 with 6,000 (down 36%). In the week ending Feb. 23, there were 1.897 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 0.7% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.542 million (down 0.6%) and digital albums comprised 355,000 (up 6.8%). There were 638,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Feb. 23 (up 2.6% week-over-week) and 894,000 vinyl albums sold (down 2.7%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 4.919 million (up 1.2% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 7.112 million (up 25.6%). Overall year-to-date album sales total 14.818 million (up 7.3% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 12.102 million (up 14.7%) and digital album sales total 2.716 million (down 16.6%).

No album still on the Billboard 200 drops 100-plus positions (unlike last week, when Shania Twain's Queen of Me plunged 156 spots to No. 166- not surprising, for older/legacy acts in a streaming-driven climate). However, an album that debuted in the top 20 on the Feb. 25 chart drops right off- Pierce the Veil's The Jaws of Life, from No. 14.
