From the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, Maurice Young started out dealing crack cocaine, and spent time in prison for attempted murder. He broke through the rap scene with the release of 1999's "Nann". Featuring Trina (Katrina Taylor), it peaked at #3 on the rap chart and #20 on the R&B chart.

89. We Trying To Stay Alive - Wyclef Jean

Born in Haiti, Nel Ust Wyclef Jean was named after biblical scholar John Wycliffe. He rose to prominence as a member of the Fugees with Pras Michel and Lauryn Hill. After they went their separate ways Wyclef released his solo debut album The Carnival in 1997. The first single, "We Trying To Stay Alive", features Pras and John Forté. It peaked at #3 on the rap chart and #14 on the R&B chart, and samples "Stayin' Alive" by The Bee Gees and "Top Billin'" by Audio Two.

While the use of "Stayin' Alive" was approved, The Bee Gees were not a fan of the song.

88. Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody - Kid N' Play

"Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody" was the lead single from their third album Face The Nation. Also featured on the soundtrack to House Party 2, it topped the rap chart and peaked at #26 on the R&B chart, and was their lone Hot 100 entry. Samples the Brick song of the same name and "Funky President" by James Brown.

Fun fact: the movie House Party was originally intended for DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince.

Taking their cue from the East Coast-based Stop The Violence Movement and "Self Destruction" a year earlier, a collection of West Coast rappers formed the West Coast Rap All-Stars. Released in 1990, "We're All In The Same Gang" topped the rap chart and peaked at #10 on the R&B chart and #35 on the Hot 100. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance By a Duo Or Group. Some of the rappers featured on the song include Ice-T, Dr. Dre, J.J. Fad, Digital Underground, Young MC, Tone Loc, MC Hammer, and singer Michel'le.

Formed in Jacksonville, Florida, 69 Boyz consists of Thrill Da Playa (Van Bryant) and Fast Cash (Barry Wright). They're best known for their 1994 single "Tootsee Roll". It peaked at #1 on the rap chart, #9 on the R&B chart, #8 on the Hot 100, and was one of the biggest hits of the Miami bass subgenre of hip hop.

85. Real Muthaphuckkin G's - Eazy-E

After Dr. Dre left N.W.A and helped form Death Row Records, he recorded a diss track with Snoop Dogg aimed at Eazy-E titled "F**k Wit Dre Day". Eazy-E responded with the EP It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa. The lead single, "Real Muthaphuckkin G's", features Gangsta Dresta and B.G. Knocc Out. Dresta wrote the song after Eazy told him stories about Dre, and Knocc Out later added a verse. Released in 1993 (with the radio edit titled "Real Compton City G's"), it peaked at #2 on the rap chart and #12 on the R&B chart.

Eazy-E was later diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1995, and passed away from AIDS-induced pneumonia a month later.

The lead single from her fourth album Ain't No Other, "Ruffneck" presented a harder, more aggressive sound for MC Lyte. Co-written and co-produced by Wreckx-N-Effect, it topped the rap chart and peaked at #10 on the R&B chart and #35 on the Hot 100 in 1993. It also received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance and was the first single by a solo female rapper to be certified gold. Samples "The Payback" by James Brown and contains an interpolation of "If It Ain't Rough, It Ain't Right" by Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth.

From New Orleans, Christopher Dorsey sold crack cocaine at an early age before meeting Birdman. He later signed with Cash Money Records and took on the name B.G. (for Baby Gangsta). His best known song came in 1999 with "Bling Bling". Featuring Hot Boys and Big Tymers (Birdman and Mannie Fresh), it peaked at #10 on the rap chart, #13 on the Hot 100, and #36 on the Hot 100. It also helped his album Chopper City In The Ghetto go platinum.

B.G. is currently serving time in federal prison for gun possession and witness tampering.

81. Mr. Wendal - Arrested Development

Arrested Development was formed in Atlanta by Speech (Todd Thomas) and Headliner (Timothy Barnwell). Later adding Baba Oje, Montsho Eshe, Rasa Don, Aerle Taree, and Dionne Farris, they released their debut album 3 Years, 5 Months And 2 Days In The Life Of... in 1992. "Mr. Wendal" was the third single from that album. It topped the dance chart and peaked at #4 on the rap chart and #6 on the R&B and Hot 100 charts.

Arrested Development broke up in 1996, but reunited in 2000 and have been touring ever since. Baba Oje died from leukemia in 2018.

random thought but, as good as this list was, there were still some curious omissions. I know picking for a rankdown like this is super-tough, but like...just to narrow it down to a few big examples: no offense to Heavy D & The Boyz and Kid N' Play, I don't think either deserved a second song in this series while Gang Starr and Big L have none. It was also shocking to not see any Mos Def for this decade, but I guess he does have some worthwhile 2000s options, so perhaps he's being saved for the next rankdown? No "93 'Til Infinity" was disappointing too, although the song has already been ranked a couple times so that's not the worst thing in the world.

Still no complaints about songs that've gone out though I am actually surprised Mr. Wendel was out early. I'm not as down on Arrested Development as other people but I'd be lying if the criticism they were toothless and soft, even compared to other lowkey acts like Tribe or De La Soul, wasn't warranted. If the song to represent them was Everyday People, I'd rank them much higher.

The verses in We're All In The Same Gang are actually pretty good , it's just a bit hard to take seriously knowing half of the people in the song would go on to make diss tracks at each other.

Tootsee Roll is something I'd normally find annoying but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have fun. It's still stupid as well but eh, if it came on at a party, it'dbe hype

Born in Brooklyn, Richard Simpson was discovered by Howie Tee. He broke through with the release of his 1990 album The One. That album's lead single, "Treat 'Em Right", topped the rap chart, peaked at #33 on the R&B chart, and was his only Hot 100 entry. Samples "Love Thang" by First Choice and "There Was a Time" by Dee Felice Trio. It was also featured on the soundtrack to Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare.

Chubb Rock is now a co-host of a syndicated afternoon radio show.
