If that was the case, this should be a revenue chart, not a music consumption chart. I bought Anti-Hero during her big week of sales to boost my Eras odds (lol), and I don't think I ever listened to the file, I streamed the song on Spotify instead. Sales aren't a reliable indicator – a fusion of radio and streams are needed. Flowers / Last Night is the biggest song last week, the same way Rich Flex was unquestionably the biggest song in its debut week or Good 4 U was the biggest song for all of Butter's 2021 weeks

Billboard just needs to totally deflate the sales stats, literally no one buys music anymore aside from boomers and stans. There's no reason huge sales with zero airplay and mediocre streaming (the #1 consumption of music nowadays) should be able to get #1 or even Top 10, it's ridiculous.

Revenue is part of, but not the entire purpose of the Hot 100.

Just for thought: what if sales contributed to the Hot 100 on an amortized basis? For example, a sale counts as 40 streams in the week its purchased, 25 the week after, then 15, and so on for say, 5 weeks. Those are just hypothetical numbers, but amortizing could both reduce the weight of streams and 'smooth' out the unnatural peaks of mass buying campaigns, as well as more accurately depict how people actually consume songs they buy.

Not surprised by Ed's new song not taking off. I've noticed this kind of decline after an artist hits an incredible peak (and I'm not referring to Shape of You). After Ed broke the record for biggest tour gross and all that hype followed, I felt it was a moment where people reevaluated and wondered if he was overrated and deserved the honor. People sometimes shy away when they feel someone has won too much too soon.

He'll forever have a catalog but I think it's time for another Ed break.

Interesting, this does happen sometimes (like songs set to the backing tracks of other songs) which I guess would classify as a remix and be combined with the original. If strong and separate enough elements of both songs are included however (especially the vocals), this would classify as a mashup or a medley, and would probably chart as a separate entry. There's many mashups of course, however rarely do they do well enough to chart, however a well-known example that comes to mind is Numb/Encore by Linkin Park and Jay-Z, which reached #20 in 2005 (the individual songs released by each artist also charted in the top 40 as well). Another famous example is Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go by Soft Cell (more a medley than a mashup, and in which the latter song was actually a cover of the Supremes' track), however I'm not exactly sure how that was treated, might have just been combined with the main entry for Tainted Love.

I might agree with you somewhat, but I think that would only apply for artists who are new and have suddenly hit it really big. This doesn't apply to Ed, he's been huge for almost 10 years now and has a long-established fan base, so I hardly think they would all of a sudden just now tune out to him for that reason.

I don't think we should write the Ed obituaries now. Will he ever have a Shape of You size hit in the US? Probably not. But also, he has had flop songs before (Afterglow came right after I Don't Care and did nothing) and rebounded with Bad Habits and Shivers, two of his biggest hits and two of the biggest hits released in 2021.

This is an acoustic album about recent tragedies in his life that he deliberately tempered expectations for saying he didn't care how this one charted.

I bet his next pop-banger album will still score a YE Top 20 hit that everybody will be sick of from overplaying

I'm not sure about that, but yes, definitely possible he's still not finished yet, and you bring up a good point that he (as well as most artists in the midst of their success) have had flop songs, and starts and stops. Actually, the single that was promoted right after his biggest hit Shape of You, Castle on the Hill, was a relative flop compared to that, never making it back into the top 20 after its initial debut at #6.

all this talk of getting rid of sales all together, lol. It's actually the MAIN component cuz it costs the most! Radio and streaming are literally free. If anything, one sale per account per track PERIOD. No gifting, no allowing up to 4, only 1. If people want to make 1000's of accounts and spend 1000's of dollars, then so be it. It's still more of an effort than casually listening to the radio or putting TTH on loop on mute.

He unquestionably does, but he said in the promo for this album that this is the one album he didn’t write for the charts or expect to chart well. Is that probably a degree of cap? Sure. But it’s definitely not a Bad Habit or Shape of You or Thinking Out Loud that smashed as it was aggressively designed to

Honestly i’d rather Kill Bill be another Levitating case instead of it having just one week at #1 and not being as historic. There’s something more satisfying about seeing a song that’s been blocked from hitting the top but ends up still becoming the biggest song of the year and that’s what makes it feel 10x more impactful imo.

I agree. I don't think Ed Sheeran is over at all but this isn't the first time a notable decline has come right as a big artist achieves a massive feat and people shift their view. I'm sure if he takes more time off and changes up his sound things will work out.
