I feel like we're in a very transitional moment in pop music right now, we aren't really sure what the big defining sounds of the 2020s are gonna be yet, so in the meantime the general public is making all the songs that should've been huge hits last decade big

I think Jersey club, Drill, Hyperpop, more Reggaetón/Latin music, Country and afrobeats could potentially be one of the leading sounds of the 2020s. But I don't know if any of those genres could still be the main trends in say like.......June 2026, I don't even know if TikTok will still be influencing the industry at that point. I just really hope rock/rock bands somehow make a resurgence bringing in whatever new sub genres into the mainstream, because it's disappearance is one of the main things that's keeping the charts stale.

Looks like it will blend with country artists for now, from HARDY's country/rock split airplay single releases to Jelly Roll's current single climbing up both country and rock airplay at the same time. Not to mention artists such as Zach Bryan are charting in Billboard's rock charts as well.

Kind of a weird one this week...only 2 songs are actively charting on US Spotify 200. Definitely some separation between streaming and TikTok right now. US Spotify Stats (for charting songs)See You Again (-1% vs 7d Ago): 1.08M Streams yesterday (#3 Overall) GOOD LOYAL THOTS (-6%): 337k (#133)

Either way, one bad collab will definitely not ruin one's career.

Random side note, but I just realized Kelly Clarkson's Haunted has a somewhat similar feel to Taylor's. That was also a very good song (probably my favorite from My December), and possibly could've saved that album if it was released as a single.

Like who is there dominating besides Taylor, SZA, Morgan, and Miley? Where are all the other big names?

I mean, we still have Harry, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Drake, The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, tons of huge artists are out there getting big hits still. There's also the fact that older music is much more accessible now than it's been at any other point in history. This is a bad way of looking at this trend imo

This is a bad way of looking at this trend imo i think what's happening is people are more willing to go "oh hey this is pretty neat lol let's stream it" than ever before so random stuff becomes big/massive hits. i do think we have some of the defining sounds of the 2020s and it's more so a lot of the streaming base either mainly staying away from current hits or just blowing random stuff up

I mean I would also argue the 80's revival sound is now apart of the 2020's defining sounds, since it's been over 3 years since Blinding Lights hit and it's still around. Also the biggest hits of the decade are all 80's inspired (Stay, As It Was, Levitating).

The fact that all of the artists you listed have dominated or were huge in pop culture in the past three decades shows there’s a lack of big name Gen Z artists in the music industry. I mean with the expection of Olivia and Billie, what other big Gen Z artist(s) have rose up since 2018 without them being TikTok one-hit wonders?

Looks like the record 10+ week #1 streak per year will keep going, never thought or wanted Morgan to get one. But here we are.
