In terms of scrolling on TikTok thru endless 20 second videos, the feeling of a 2 year gap between albums is career suicide at this point. she's gonna be fine, just because Kids Be On Their Damn Phones doesn't mean people don't want to hear new music from her I think people are forgetting that Olivia had an audience during her Disney days too its not just the post driver’s license and Sour era fans. She will be fine whenever she decides to come back.

^He has been working on a new album since February this year, but will have concerts in Philippines and Seoul next month, so it isn't clear when he will release something new.

I want Olivia back too but I feel like people gotta put into perspective how long her gap between albums actually has been, Sour isn't even two years old yet, it hasn't been *that* long between albums. She isn't "MIA" she's just working on the album still In terms of scrolling on TikTok thru endless 20 second videos, the feeling of a 2 year gap between albums is career suicide at this point. By this logic, Harry Styles shouldn't have smashed as hard as he did

if you want proof that Olivia is still popular and will have tons of hype when she comes back, she's the 73rd most popular artist on Spotify right now. having a big back catalogue is super important for being a top artist on Spotify so Olivia doing that with only one album and a handful of songs from HSMTMTS, especially when she hasn't dropped anything in 2 years, is SUPER impressive

there's no Gen Z artists cuz there is no work ethic by any Gen Z to begin with. And since its their fault people's attention spans have plummeted by apps such as TikTok, any artist needs to work their butt off and release single after single and album after album NONSTOP and Gen Z just doesn't have what it takes to do that. The few that have stuck around which have been mentioned above, worked their butt off. Clearly that took a toll on Olivia cuz she is MIA. I disagree that it's a problem with Gen Z's motivation. There are still hundreds of Gen Z age people working their asses off to make it big, and it's easier than it's ever been to make/produce/release your own music. I have a few theories (will try to tie back to hot 100 to keep it relevant lol): - Oversaturation of artists is making it hard for any 1 to capture attention economy. Ice Spice was absolutely everywhere for a few weeks last year, and then her EP came out and it barely made any noise because there were already 6 other things happening. She managed to recapture some hype when BAL2 went viral, but an Ice Spice-type artist (exciting new style with industry backing) would've had a much bigger debut like 10-20 years ago. - The industry has less say now than ever before. Record companies have less pull than ever in determining what blows up. They're left trying to reverse-engineer TikTok trends (abcdefu) to try to manufacture hits. But they're at the whims of social media algorithms, and younger people hardly listen to the radio. That's why this Spotify "pay for more algorithmic streams" could be such a gamechanger. Playlisting provided a relatively modest boost, but record companies want more power. - It's much easier to keep investing in what already works. The Top artists on the Hot 100 these days are looking more and more like a list of the biggest names of the past 15 years. Taylor, Miley, The Weeknd, Drake, Harry Styles. All are pretty much universally known, so it's much easier for their stuff to float to the top by default. - Streaming is allowing everyone to disappear into their own musical bubbles, destroying any concept of a "monoculture." I don't think there will be another Taylor Swift. I have 4 or 5 close friends who listen to different types of music, and none of them listen to anything you would see on the Hot 100. Occasionally a song from a bubble will be big enough to show up on the Hot 100 - think Mexican Regional (Peso Pluma), Country (Wallen), or even k-pop (Fifty Fifty). But ubiquitous hits by newer artists are hard to come by, and that makes it so much harder for Gen Z to break through into the mainstream. I agree on most of this however I'd like to add points as SPREE seems focused on the "smaller attention spans of Gen Z". There's a lot to dissect when it comes to attention spans that I can't fill in one post on a forum but let me do my best (I'll leave a spoiler for all the links I found). First off, attention is not binary by which I mean it's not as simple someone not paying attention. Yes distraction does play a part but filtering of various different information is another aspect of this. There's also different levels of attention based on how passive or active an act is so listening to music will take up more attention than transcription for instance. In fact there's not much reliable data backing up the idea that a shorter attention span leads to a lazier or less proficient work ethic. It also doesn't have much impact on how we much of media we consume. For instance, many polls have consistently found younger people are actually reading more than older people but they're also watching less of traditional cable TV (though there's other factors for the latter) Second is that any technological advancements and better access to information would've led to shorter attention spans. Data tracing the source of shortening attention spans is correlated alongside the Information age and better access to fresher news and information. TikTok and any other social media apps are just a byproduct and just align well with the change, and I highly doubt anyone would actually be in favor of having less access to information. This isn't to defend TikTok and say it's unproblematic, I'm just pointing out it isn't the source.

I'm hoping and nailing for Fast Car to reach number 1. I'm not into country but LC version is pretty addicting. Its been a while as well for the last remake to reach number 1.(Lady Marmalade).

The original is such a classic. A true 80's gem. It "only" reached #6 in the Hot 100, which is a crime IMO. A new version outcharting it wouldn't feel right for me.

I didn't realize this was released earlier today:
This song will be million times better if it's Muni Long only and one rapper in the song. This song would be much better if it was muted for the entire runtime

Reinvigorated by TikTok and newly promoted to radio by RCA, the track completes the longest trip to No. 1 from a song's release.
More than 12 years after its release and its original chart run, Miguel’s “Sure Thing” hits No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart (dated May 27).
The song, on ByStorm/Black Ice/Jive/Legacy/RCA Records, completes the longest ascent to the Pop Airplay summit from a title’s release, having first hit Billboard’s charts in February 2011, following its November 2010 release on Miguel’s debut LP, All I Want Is You. An R&B/hip-hop radio hit in its original run, “Sure Thing” crowned the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, as well as R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, for a week in May 2011.
On the all-genre, multimetric Billboard Hot 100, “Sure Thing” reached No. 36 over a 23-week stay in March-August 2011.
In 2022, the song resurged thanks to newfound attention on TikTok, where a sped-up version has soundtracked more than 4 million clips. It debuted on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart this January and ranked at No. 30 on the most recently published, May 20-dated chart with 10.6 million official streams in the United States May 5-11, according to Luminate.
On the May 20-dated all-format Radio Songs survey, “Sure Thing” rose 7-6, up 6% to 51.6 million in audience. On the Hot 100, it pushed 15-14, reaching a new best — as well as a new career high for Miguel, surpassing the No. 15 peak of Mariah Carey’s “#Beautiful,” on which he’s featured, in 2013.
(Helping maintain familiarity with top 40 radio listeners, Miguel tallied six Pop Airplay hits in 2012-22, rising as high as No. 12 as featured on Kygo’s “Remind Me to Forget” in 2018, his best career rank prior to the revival of “Sure Thing.”)
Meanwhile, the comeback to new heights for “Sure Thing” has been historic, as the single broke the record for the most weeks ever spent on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: 78 (through the latest, May 20-dated survey, where it placed at No. 5, marking its first appearance in the chart’s top five since September 2011).
“We were keeping a close eye on the metrics,” says RCA head of promotion Keith Rothschild about the decision to promote the song to pop radio after TikTok sparked new interest in it. It debuted on the Pop Airplay chart dated Feb. 25, at No. 40, and hits No. 1 in its 14th week on the chart, up 7% in plays May 12-18.
While “Sure Thing” is far removed from its original release, “programmers were not hesitant at all,” Rothschild says, especially with other catalog songs recently finding new life on radio, whether from TikTok or synchs, including Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary” and The Weeknd’s “Die for You.”
Until “Sure Thing,” “Die for You” — originally from 2016 and remixed this year with Ariana Grande, as it, too, received new radio promotion, by Republic — briefly held the record for the longest wait to hit No. 1 on Pop Airplay from a track’s release, as it topped the tally for two weeks this February.
“We knew the song was a hit, as it was a No. 1 R&B/hip-hop record when it was originally out,” says Rothschild of “Sure Thing.” “It was never worked at pop, so we asked programmers to put it into callout. The numbers came back massive, and we knew it was game on.”

So we are going to let Last Night become the longest running #1 of this year? Ugh. Yep, literally the same situation with “As It Was” last year. Runs at #1 for multiple rounds due to absolutely zero competition! If Olivia wanted to come back, she should release her lead single before it reaches week 10 at #1.

^He has been working on a new album since February this year, but will have concerts in Philippines and Seoul next month, so it isn't clear when he will release something new. I am not even looking for a new album at this point. I would just like him to release a single. Just like Nicki Minaj just released Super Freaky Girl as a stand alone single.

Kinda ironic you’re saying then when Last Night could get the same amount of weeks at number-one As It Was got if it stays number-one til Speak Now (TV) drops and Enchanted goes number-one.

I'm not a huge fan of the song, but I must say it's impressive, especially for a 12 year-old R&B song!!

It’ll be funny if we start seeing big huge hits like “Smooth” getting a second chart life.

Ella Baila Sola stays on top for a fifth week in a row as the gap between it and Last Night actually widened this week. EBS got a sizeable boost of 12.74%, the biggest it's had in a while. But it wasn't the biggest story as debuting in the Top 3 with enormous streaming across various platforms and with a well-timed radio push to boot, All My Life with Lil Durk and J. Cole debuted at #3. It's expected to debut in the Top 3 of the Hot 100 and has good things in its future with Lil Durk's album dropping next week.
While we only got one notable debut this week there were several big gains for songs, including the expected boosts for Area Codes and MATHEMATICAL DISRESPECT, with the latter unfortunately doubling its streams from last week. We also saw boosts from Bailey Zimmerman as he dropped his debut album, although not as big as I was expecting. The only other interesting thing to note is that of the 19 Taylor Swift songs charting, Cruel Summer is her highest song. It remains to be seen if it re-enters the charts or if it gets a radio push.

I'm not a huge fan of the song, but I must say it's impressive, especially for a 12 year-old R&B song!!
It’ll be funny if we start seeing big huge hits like “Smooth” getting a second chart life. If Smooth will resurface back like Ruth chart run, it will possibly surpass The Twist or even BL. 😂
