What massive hit singles’ dominance hurt follow-up singles from breaking out? Flowers seems to be doing this right now, for example.

Rihanna's "We Found Love" had quite a bit of longevity and made it difficult for "You Da One" and "Talk That Talk" to shine if I recall correctly.

Dark Horse by Katy Perry ended up hurting all of the remaining singles from PRISM (combined with just awful promo, neither Birthday or This Is How We Do reached the top 10).

While they were still hits, it certainly does feel like the follow up singles on Harry's House could have had a lot more longevity if radio didn't have a giant boner for "As It Was." Or maybe artists should go back to a standard single release schedule.

Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” had such a stranglehold on radio in 2013 and 2014 that both his own follow-up “Hey Brother” and Aloe Blacc’s solo hit “The Man” only barely got into into the top 10 of pop radio and plunged immediately afterwards.

According to this video (not going to find the timestamp because it's so long), the label had to ask radio stations to move on to the new TLC single "Unpretty," because they were playing "No Scrubs" like it had just come out. "Unpretty" still went #1, but for a #1 single it has always seemed to be in the shadow of "No Scrubs" and is definitely the least remembered of their 4 #1's.
I remember an interview where Janet stated that in Europe they had to wait in releasing the next single from The Velvet Rope because "Together Again" was so massive.

I know with Olivia Rodrigo’s situation where good 4 u was so massive that it flew past deja vu when it hadn’t peaked yet and prevented it from going any higher. It also caused her next single traitor to flop slightly.

Carrie Underwood's "Wasted" was far from a flop, but "Before He Cheats" definitely overshadowed both it and, to a lesser extent, "So Small".

It also caused her next single traitor to flop slightly. I don’t think Deja Vu’s situation is necessarily true, it was out of the top 10 even before G4U came out. It didn’t really take off until after the album came out. And how did Traitor flop, sure it wasn’t as big as her other songs but it was a top 10 hit and lasted over 20 weeks on the Hot 100.
