JoBros, YoungBoy, Daft Punk — Can Anyone Take Down Morgan Wallen on the Billboard 200? In this week's The Contenders, some big names release big albums. Do any of them have a chance at toppling One Thing at a Time?
BY ANDREW UNTERBERGERTThe Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming charts dated May 20), new albums from big names in the worlds of pop, hip-hop and country look to impact the Billboard 200’s top tier — along with a reissued dance chart-topper from a decade ago. Jonas Brothers, The Album (Republic): The brothers band already had one of the century’s most successful comebacks after a decade-long hiatus in 2019, topping both the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Hot 100 with their Happiness Begins album and its single “Sucker.” Now the trio looks to do it again with The Album — a set heavily influenced by ‘70s and ‘80s top 40, as well as by their lives as family men. The Album lacks a lead single as popular as “Sucker,” but the addictive “Waffle House” has started to scale the Hot 100, climbing to No. 82 this week. The group has also been extremely visible in its promotional lead-up to the album, performing two songs from it on Saturday Night Live in April, and kicking off its Five Albums, One Night Tour at Yankee Stadium, playing all of not only The Album, but also their other four albums before it. YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Richest Opp (Never Broke Again/Motown): Surprise: Three weeks after his second full-length of 2023, April’s Don’t Try This at Home, YoungBoy is back with the new mixtape Richest Opp. At just 17 tracks, it’s about half the running time of Home, and with none of its big-name features. But it does come with some drama: Opp, announced just days before its release, was set to drop the same day as a (later delayed) new album from fellow star rapper Lil Durk, who YoungBoy has been taking shots at over social media, and who is one of the rappers YoungBoy calls out in the new set’s antagonistic “F–k the Industry Pt. 2.” Bailey Zimmerman, Religiously. The Album (Warner Nashville/Elektra): As Morgan Wallen continues his still-uninterrupted reign atop the Billboard 200 — now at 10 weeks and counting for his One Thing at a Time — he faces a challenge from a breakout artist whose sound and ascent both mirror his own. Bailey Zimmerman has become one of the most consistently viral artists in country music — with radio success now to match, now that Hot 100 top 10 hit “Rock and a Hard Place” also topped the Country Airplay chart for six weeks — thanks to a delivery that similarly mixes power and vulnerability and lyrics that feel both personal and clever. Whether the student can depose the master depends on if the rest of his debut album Religiously. The Album streams as well as its advance singles, “Rock” and fellow Hot 100 hits “Fall in Love” and “Fix’n to Break,” all of which are included among the set’s 16 tracks. Zimmerman will also get a boost from several sales variants, including a signed CD (available via his web store), as well as digital and cassette releases. In the Mix Daft Punk, Random Access Memories (Columbia): Though the duo of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo officially went their separate ways two years ago, the robots are back this week with a 10th anniversary edition of their Billboard 200-topping, album of the year Grammy-winning 2013 album Random Access Memories. The set features a new disk of bonus cuts — including demos, alternate versions and even sequels to some of the original’s tracks – and can be purchased digitally, or as a triple-LP vinyl or double-disc CD set. Lauren Daigle, Lauren Daigle (Centricity/Atlantic): It’s been five years since CCM breakthrough artist Lauren Daigle crashed the charts with her No. 3-peaking Look Up Child LP and its surprise No. 29 Hot 100 hit “You Say,” but the powerhouse artist often referred to as “the Christian Adele” is now back with her self-titled third album. Lauren Daigle has yet to spawn a crossover hit like “You Say,” but lead single “Thank God I Do” topped Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs listing, and is available for sale in three CD versions and a whopping six vinyl variants, as well as digitally.

Morgan Wallen’s ‘One Thing at a Time’ Clocks 11th Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Plus: Jonas Brothers, YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Bailey Zimmerman debut in top 10, while Daft Punk's chart-topping "Random Access Memories" returns.

05/21/2023Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time clocks an 11th consecutive, and total, week atop the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated May 27). It now has the most weeks in a row at No. 1 since the Titanic soundtrack sailed at No. 1 for 16 consecutive weeks (its entire run at No. 1). One Thing at a Time is also the first album of any genre to spend its first 11 weeks at No. 1 since Whitney Houston’s Whitney also ruled for its first 11 weeks in 1987 (its total run at No. 1). The only other album to spend its first 11 weeks at No. 1 is Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, which logged its first 13 weeks at No. 1 (of a total of 14 weeks in the top slot) in late 1976 and early 1977. Morgan Wallen’s ‘One Thing at a Time’ Spends 10th Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 One Thing at a Time debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated March 18 and has yet to depart the top slot. It has now surpassed the total No. 1 run of Wallen’s last release, Dangerous: The Double Album, which spent its first 10 weeks at No. 1 (Jan. 23-March 27, 2021-dated charts). One Thing at a Time earned 134,500 equivalent album units in the United States in the week ending May 18 (down 5%), according to Luminate. The last album to spend at least 11 weeks in total at No. 1 was Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti, which pieced together 13 nonconsecutive weeks atop the list in May-October 2022. One Thing at a Time has the most weeks at No. 1 for any country album since Taylor Swift’s Fearless notched 11 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in late 2008 and early 2009. (Country albums are those that have charted on, or are eligible for, Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart.) Further, Wallen has now spent a total of 21 weeks at No. 1 across his two chart-topping albums (One Thing, with 11 weeks, and Dangerous, with 10). He surpasses Swift for the most weeks at No. 1 this decade (2020-onwards). Swift logged eight weeks at No. 1 with Folklore in 2020, four with Evermore in 2020-21, two with Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in 2021, one with Red (Taylor’s Version) in 2021 and five with Midnights in 2022. Swift will release her third Taylor’s Version re-recorded album, Speak Now, on July 7. Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200, Jonas Brothers notch their seventh top 10 with the No. 3 arrival of The Album, YoungBoy Never Broke Again achieves his 15th top 10 (and third of 2023) with the No. 4 bow of Richest Opp, Bailey Zimmerman earns his second top 10 with the No. 7 debut of Religiously. The Album., and Daft Punk’s chart-topping Random Access Memories re-enters the chart at No. 8 after its 10th anniversary deluxe reissue. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new May 27, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on May 23. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of One Thing at a Time’s 134,500 equivalent album units earned in the week ending May 18, SEA units comprise 124,500 (down 7%, equaling 165.47 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 36 songs), album sales comprise 8,000 (up 61% after the release of its standard vinyl album on May 12) and TEA units comprise 2,000 (down 5%). Taylor Swift’s chart-topping Midnights rises 3-2 with 60,000 equivalent album units earned (up 1%). Jonas Brothers notch their seventh top 10-charting album on the Billboard 200 as The Album debuts at No. 3. The set launches with 52,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 35,500 (making it the top-selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 16,000 (equaling 20.5 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 12 songs) and TEA units comprise a little over 500. The album’s current single, “Waffle House,” climbed 88-82 on the most recently published Billboard Hot 100 songs chart (dated May 20). It also stepped 37-34 on the all-format Radio Songs tally the same week. On the Pop Airplay chart, “Waffle” wings 18-15 on the latest list (dated May 27). The prolific YoungBoy Never Broke Again clocks his third top 10 of 2023 on the Billboard 200, as Richest Opp bows at No. 4. In total, it’s the rapper’s 15th top 10 — all earned since 2018. He now ties Drake and Future for the second-most top 10s among rap acts. Only Jay-Z and Nas have more among rap acts, each with 16. Richest Opp enters with 51,000 equivalent album units earned. SEA units comprise nearly all of that sum, with 50,500 (equaling 74.37 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 17 songs). Album sales comprise 500 and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. In total, YoungBoy Never Broke Again has placed 30 titles on the Billboard 200 albums chart, starting with AI YoungBoy in 2017, which peaked at No. 24 in August 2017. SZA’s former leader SOS falls 4-5 with 51,000 equivalent album units earned (down 5%), while Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album, dips 5-6 with 48,000 (down 1%). Bailey Zimmerman nabs his second top 10-charting effort on the Billboard 200 as Religiously. The Album. starts at No. 7. The set bows with 46,500 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 38,000 (equaling 50.5 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 15 songs), album sales comprise 8,000 and TEA units comprise 500. In October 2022, Zimmerman made his Billboard 200 debut with Leave the Light On, debuting and peaking at No. 9. In a little over a year, he’s earned eight top 40-charting his on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart (through the most recently published list, dated May 20). Chart-watchers may have noticed that there are three titles in the top 10 that use the word “album” in their title: Jonas Brothers’ The Album at No. 3, Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album at No. 6 and Zimmerman’s Religiously. The Album. at No. 7. It’s the first time at least three albums concurrently in the top 10 have had the word “album” in their title since August of 1963, when Billboard combined its separate stereo and mono album charts into one single album chart. (See more history on the Billboard 200, which began publishing as a regular, weekly fixture in March of 1956.) Daft Punk’s former No. 1 Random Access Memories jumps back onto the Billboard 200, re-entering at No. 8 with 40,000 equivalent album units earned (up 1,046%). The set was reissued for its 10th anniversary in a deluxe edition with previously unreleased archival tracks from the album’s recording sessions. Of its 40,000 units earned, album sales comprise 32,000, SEA units comprise nearly 8,000 and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. The set became the first leader for the duo, which disbanded in 2021, spending its first two weeks at No. 1 in June 2013. Rounding out the top 10 of the new Billboard 200 is Ed Sheeran’s – (Subtract), falling 2-9 with nearly 40,000 equivalent album units (down 64%) in its second week and Swift’s chart-topping Lover, descending 7-10 with 38,000 units (up 2%). Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. The BB200 chart history article that was referenced above www.billboard.com/pro/happy-birthday-billboard-200-chart-album/CHART BEAT03/24/2016Billboard 200 Turns 60! Celebrate Its Birthday With These Essential Chart Facts[/b][/b] Happy birthday to the Billboard 200 albums chart! 60 years ago, on March 24, 1956, the United States’ premier album chart began publishing on a regular basis. Getty Images HHappy birthday to the Billboard 200 albums chart! 60 years ago, on March 24, 1956, the United States’ premier album chart began publishing on a regular basis. The first No. 1 was Harry Belafonte’s Belafonte, which spent six weeks atop the chart. It was the first of 1,026 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 (through the April 2, 2016-dated tally). Let’s take a look back at some major milestones in the history of the Billboard 200 through 2016. March 24, 1956 — Billboard launches its first regularly published weekly albums chart, Best Selling Pop Albums. (It would change names to Best Selling Popular Albums the very next week!) This chart would eventually become known as the Billboard 200. Previous to the bow of the this chart, Billboard had tracked album popularity — but not consistently. The first overall album chart actually appeared 11 years earlier, on March 24, 1945. That chart was published on an irregular basis until it became a weekly fixture in our magazine on March 24, 1956. May 5, 1956 — Elvis Presley’s self-titled debut studio album hits No. 1. The King of Rock & Roll’s set, fueled by the classic single “Blue Suede Shoes,” spent 10 weeks at No. 1. May 25, 1959 — The album chart splits in two: Best Selling Monophonic LPs and Best Selling Stereophonic LPs. The names and depths of the charts would change slightly over time, but Billboard would publish two charts for mono and stereo albums until Aug. 10, 1963. May 5, 1962 — The West Side Story film soundtrack begins its record 54-week run at No. 1. Aug. 17, 1963 — The mono and stereo LP charts fold back into one overall chart known as Top LP’s. The 150-position chart would grow to 175 positions on April 1, 1967. Feb. 1, 1964 — The Beatles arrive on the Billboard 200 with Meet the Beatles! The set debuts at No. 92 on the Feb. 1, 1964-dated chart, and would hit No. 1 two weeks later (Feb. 15). The album spent 11 weeks at No. 1 and was the first of a record 19 chart-toppers for the band. May 13, 1967 — The chart’s depth increases to 200 positions, where it has remained ever since. April 26, 1969 — The original cast recording of Hair reaches No. 1 for its first of 13 weeks atop the chart. It is, so far, the most recent musical cast album to hit No. 1. Feb. 19, 1972 — The name of the chart changes from Top LP’s to Top LP’s & Tapes. June 7, 1975 — Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy becomes the first album to debut at No. 1. Only six albums would debut at No. 1 until June 29, 1991 (more on that in a moment). Feb. 26, 1983 — Michael Jackson’s Thriller starts its 37-week run at No. 1 — the longest for an album by an artist. (Only the West Side Story film soundtrack, with 54 weeks at No. 1, earned more weeks atop the chart.) Oct. 20, 1984 — The word tapes is dropped from the chart’s name, as it becomes known as Top 200 Albums. It later transitions to Top Pop Albums (Jan. 5, 1985) and then The Billboard 200 Top Albums (Sept. 7, 1991). Its current name — Billboard 200 — is adopted on March 14, 1992. March 7, 1987 — Rap resides at No. 1 for the first time, as Beastie Boys’ Licensed to Ill jumps from No. 2 to No. 1. The hip-hop trio’s album ruled the list for seven weeks. May 25, 1991 — It was a week of “historic change” for Billboard, as we noted in a letter from our then-publisher, Howard Lander. That week, we launched our first two sales charts using electronically monitored point-of-sale purchase information, courtesy of SoundScan Inc. (now known as MRC Data). The first No. 1 on the revamped chart was Michael Bolton‘s Time, Love & Tenderness. Lander wrote, “For more than 30 years, our sales charts have relied on rankings of best-selling records obtained from stores, over the telephone or by messenger service. Until now, the only technological changes have been the introduction of computer to tally the data more quickly and the recent usage of fax machines — but the basic methodology has remained the same… With (this week’s charts) we are proud to begin using actual piece counts our two leading charts: Top Pop Albums and Top Country Albums.” That same week, we launched the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart, which ranked the best selling older titles (which were restricted from charting on the Billboard 200). The chart is later renamed Catalog Albums. June 29, 1991 — Skid Row’s Slave to the Grind is the first album to debut at No. 1 after the Billboard 200 began using SoundScan data to power its ranking — and the first to open atop the list since Michael Jackson’s Bad in 1987. Six more albums bowed at No. 1 in 1991. The influx of openings at No. 1 is owed to the chart’s increased accuracy thanks to SoundScan’s point-of-sale data, instead of having to rely on ranked reports obtained from stores. Nearly 25 years later, it’s normal for albums to debut at No. 1, and, generally speaking, few albums reach No. 1 unless they’ve debuted there. For example, since January of 2014, of the 44 albums that reached No. 1 for the first time, all but three of them debuted at No. 1. Jan. 24, 1998 — The soundtrack to Titanic sails to the top of the chart, for its first of 16 weeks at No. 1. April 8, 2000 — *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached debuts at No. 1, and sets a then-record for the largest sales week for an album since Nielsen began tracking sales: 2.42 million sold in its first week. The record would prove to be unbeaten until 2015… Nov. 22, 2003 — The Top Comprehensive Albums chart launches, which combines both current and catalog titles together in one overall chart. The chart would continue weekly publication through the Nov. 28, 2009. Dec. 5, 2009 — The Billboard 200 brings catalog titles back onto the chart, so both older and newer titles could chart alongside one another. (Essentially, the Top Comprehensive Albums chart became the new Billboard 200.) At the same time, a new chart for only current albums was established, and it was aptly titled Top Current Albums. Dec. 13, 2014 — The Billboard 200 becomes a multi-metric popularity chart ranking overall consumption, measuring traditional album sales, track equivalent albums, and streaming equivalent albums. The new methodology was devised to provide a better sense of an album’s popularity by reflecting not just sales, but overall activity. (A pure sales chart was simultaneously launched as well: Top Album Sales. It maintains the previously methodology employed by the Billboard 200, comprising Nielsen’s sales data exclusively.) The first No. 1 on the consumption-based chart was Taylor Swift‘s 1989 (earning its fourth nonconsecutive week at No. 1). Dec. 12, 2015 — Adele’s 25 debuts at No. 1, earning 3.48 million equivalent album units in its debut week, of which 3.38 million were in traditional album sales — a new single-week record.

By the end of this year it's entirely possible that Youngboy NBA will have the most top ten albums of any rapper ever. Something about that seems...not right. But if he can release an album every 2 months and his fans get it into the top ten then more power to him!

Jonas Brothers notch their fourth No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated May 27) as The Album enters atop the list with 35,500 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending May 18, according to Luminate. The trio previously led the list with Happiness Begins (2019), Lines, Vines and Trying Times (2009) and A Little Bit Longer (2008). Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, Daft Punk’s former No. 1 Random Access Memories re-enters at No. 2 following its 10th anniversary deluxe reissue, Lauren Daigle’s self-titled album arrives at No. 3 and Joji’s Smithereens re-enters at No. 7 after its vinyl release. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. The new May 27, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on May 23. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of The Album’s 35,500 sold, physical sales comprise 29,000 (20,000 on CD, 9,000 on vinyl) and digital download sales comprise 6,500. Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories charges back onto the list, as the former No. 1 re-enters at No. 2 after its 10th anniversary deluxe reissue on May 12. The set returns with a little over 32,000 copies sold (up 4,452%) after the album was reissued as a digital download, CD and vinyl LP with additional tracks. Lauren Daigle’s new self-titled studio album bows at No. 3 on Top Album Sales, selling 20,000 copies in its first week. It’s her second top 10-charting effort, following her last release, 2018’s No. 2-peaking Look Up Child. Ed Sheeran’s – (Subtract) falls 1-4 in its second week on the list, selling 20,000 copies (down 76%), the Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3: Awesome Mix Vol. 3 soundtrack falls 3-5 in its second frame (19,000; down 33%) and SEVENTEEN’s SEVENTEEN 10th Mini Album: FML dips 4-6 (16,000; down 41%). Joji’s Smithereens surges back onto the chart at No. 7 with 13,000 copies sold (up 5,272%) after it was released on vinyl. The set debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Nov. 19, 2022-dated list. Taylor Swift’s former leader Midnights falls 6-8 (13,000; up 9%), Agust D’s chart-topping D-Day descends 5-9 (12,000; down 10%) and LE SSERAFIM’s Unforgiven drops 2-10 in its second week (nearly 12,000; down 69%). In the week ending May 18, there were 1.778 million albums sold in the U.S. (down 12% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.448 million (down 12.8%) and digital albums comprised 331,000 (down 8.1%). There were 620,000 CD albums sold in the week ending May 18 (down 15.9% week-over-week) and 817,000 vinyl albums sold (down 10.6%). www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/jonas-brothers-fourth-number-one-billboard-top-album-sales-chart-1235334309/Jonas Brothers Notch Fourth No. 1 on Top Album Sales ChartBy Keith Caulfield 05/22/2023 Plus: Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" gets a reissue boost, Lauren Daigle debuts and Joji's "Smithereens" surges after vinyl release. Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 13.293 million (up 5.2% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 18.789 million (up 27.4%). Overall year-to-date album sales total 39.333 million (up 10.3% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 32.289 million (up 17.1%) and digital album sales total 7.043 million (down 13.1%).

A look at the average # of albums charting for 100 weeks or more in May for each May since 2009 - (before 2010 catalog rules were in place minimizing the number of long charting albums) We have gone from 2 in 2009 to over half the chart charting for 100 or more weeks -- streaming, the decline of the album or whatever perhaps
