Luke Combs
"Fast Car"
Album: Gettin' Old
Label: Columbia/River House
Writer: Tracy Chapman
Adds: released back on April 18, 2023
***Not officially confirmed by label, but song is 2nd most added this week at Country Radio, right behind Jason Aldean's "Try That In A Small Town" (5/22/23). Song is already #21 on Billboard Country Airplay, #2 on Hot Country Songs, #9 on Billboard Hot 100 and #25 on Mediabase Country chart as of latest published chart. It has a gain of 224 spins today along with a good sizable gain audience. So YES, I am declaring this as a radio single and yes at Country radio even though it is at U.S Top 40 and Hot AC stations***.
The way this song is performing at Country radio, tells me this deserves a thread on the Country forums page.

Yeah, I was thinking the same in regards to this needing a thread. Even if it's not officially an official single at country radio, it might as well be. I think the ship has sailed for them even bothering to give it an adds date anyway at this point, and it'll likely follow "Love You Anyway" to the top of the charts very soon after it gets there.

Would not be shocked if this follows "Last Night" in passing the actual single.

I think he did a great job with this. The original is a classic but he truly did it justice. I like this far more than the single so I hope this does pass it.

Maybe a lot of people will disagree me with my comment, but for me the best country version of Fast Car was done by Christian Kane back in 2010 never been released as a single but always considered as a gem from the album The House of Rules which is his only album to date. His version is more dynamic than that of Luke Combs, which fits perfectly with the tone of his voice and for me this version is by far more better.
Lord how I miss those days when we still had Jamey Johnson on the airwaves, the Early Aldean days ....etc.

I really like his version of the song. It’s one of my favourite things out at radio right now.

It’s funny that one of the biggest country stars of this century is about to have his biggest hit by covering a pop song from 1988. Luke did a great job though, and the chorus on this song alone makes it stand out among the best of his work already. Only bad part is I feel this is completely overshadowing “Love You Anyway”.

I've never heard Christian Kane's version of "Fast Car" until tonight, but I'm definitely in the camp that thinks Luke Combs did it better. Christian's wasn't for me, really.

Solid rendition too. I like it more than the Luke Combs version since it has different arrangement than the original tune.

Lack of emotion and power is the perfect was to describe his version. It remains relative all your opinions. There's nothing that transcends in the version of Luke Combs too. Everyone is free to their own opinions of this song vs. other versions, but Luke's version is literally blossoming into a mega crossover hit without almost any effort on the part of him/his record label. It's streaming like crazy and radio stations are playing it enough that it just surpassed his currently-promoted country single, so it seems like it's struck a chord with... a lot of people, to put lightly. This is poised to become his signature hit.

When was the last time a song organically took off on country radio without a push from the label? I can’t remember one in recent memory….Tennessee Whiskey became a successful song for Stapleton and it gets airplay now but not back then.

I'm having trouble fully understanding what you're trying to say here, but this blew up naturally on streaming upon release and took off that way, and it feels like you're saying that his record label is the reason this is blowing up which would be false.

I thought his label released both singles like they have done before? So besides Luke and Morgan is this a recent trend?

I believe that would be “Last Night”. I thought his label released both singles like they have done before? So besides Luke and Morgan is this a recent trend? I'm pretty sure this is also what happened with Rascal Flatts' "Life Is A Highway". It was never actually released as a single, but radio turned it into a huge hit anyway, cannibalizing a lot of the attention from their actually-promoted single at the time, which was "My Wish".
Interestingly, "Highway" only went to #18 on the country charts while "Wish" went #1. So the chart situations don't perfectly line up. But I'd say in terms of public perception, "Life Is A Highway" FEELS like a much bigger hit than "My Wish"!
I'm not sure of any other instances off the top of my head. It's definitely a rare phenomenon. I don't even know if I'd call it a recent trend, or just an insane coincidence that it has happened twice this month.

I wonder if radio is starting to get onboard with what’s popular and trending playing what people are actually listening to. It definitely is interesting what you said how it has almost never happened and now it’s happened twice in the last month.

Last night was sent to pop radio first and OTAAT was sent to country at the same time. Then country added Last Night after a few weeks so his label started working that as well.
Another example is Gary Allan's Right Where I Need To Be. It started off as an album cut that got a lot of airplay while Lovin' You Against My Will was his current single. It spent 23 weeks, well 16 after BB cut the chart from 75 to 60 spots and the retroactively took away some of the weeks. Then it was officially released and became his forst top 5.

I believe “Meant To Be” by Bebe Rexha & FGL started charting on its own before it got actually single promotion treatment.

The Wilkinsons have a pretty stellar version of this song too. Besides Tracy’s version, that has always been my favorite cover. We’ll see if this one grows…

Not me listening to various commonly mentioned Fast Car covers in last two days and still finding Luke Combs' to have the best cover version

Rascal Flatts did it with "Life is a Highway" before there were streaming services to hear all the music that you want. That song took off because people saw the movie "Cars" and wanted to hear it on the radio since there was no other way to hear the song. Imagine having to call a radio station to hear a song that you like. That is how it was before the internet.

I mean, 2006 was hardly before the internet (I bet "Life Is A Highway" could have gone platinum simply on iTunes Store sales combined with Limewire downloads alone, lmao), but I get your point 😂😂
Tbh, it really gets to the heart of just how dated the radio model is though when you realize how important of a role it played before the internet, and the fact that it really hasn't been updated since...

I’m all for radio actually paying attention to what people want to listen to, I just wish it wasn’t primarily with the two artists they burned me out on years ago.
