Stray Kids Lead Swarm of New Releases Aiming for Top of Billboard 200 In this week's The Contenders, the K-pop stars look to launch a '5-Star' debut atop the chart, with plenty of competition from other heavy hitters.
BY ANDREW UNTERBERGERTThe Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming charts dated June 18), Stray Kids aim for their third No. 1 album in two years, while new albums from rising country hitmakers, star producers and veteran rockers also jockey for position. Stray Kids, 5-Star (JYP/Republic): Stray Kids have proven themselves among pop’s most consistent performers of any nationality on the Billboard 200 in the past couple years, having topped the chart twice already in 2022 alone, with EPs Oddinary and Maxident. This week, they should have a pretty good shot at making it three in a row with their new 12-track LP, 5-Star. Once again, physical sales should drive consumption of the new set, with a variety of available options for fans. That includes 18 total collectible CD packages (with exclusives for Barnes & Noble, Target, Walmart, the Weverse store and a signed edition in the group’s official webstore) that contain artist-branded merch, some of which is standard across all packages and some of which is randomized (photo cards, mini posters, sticker sets, photo books). There are also four alternative digital versions of the album, sold only in the act’s webstore, each containing the same tracklists, but with alternative covers and bonus tracks (each with different voice memos from individual members of the group), selling for $6.99 each. After 12 consecutive weeks of Morgan Wallen largely streaming his way to No. 1, we might have our second straight week of sales determining the chart’s top spot, following Taylor Swift’s reissue-prompted Midnights rebound last week. Jelly Roll, Whitsitt Chapel (Bailey & Buddee/BBR Music Group): Billboard’s May cover star has yet to get higher than No. 97 on the Billboard 200 – but that should change with the release of Whitsitt Chapel, Jelly Roll‘s first album since pivoting fully to country. The set follows the 2022 breakout success of Ballads of the Broken singles “Dead Man Walking” and “Son of a Sinner” — as well as a star making night at the 2023 CMT Awards, where he took home three trophies — and features a hit of its own with “Need a Favor,” which climbs 40-31 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. Though Jelly Roll streams fairly well, sales should also make up the majority of Whitsitt Chapel’s first-week numbers. To that end, he’s released the album in three vinyl LPs (including a color variant exclusive for Walmart), a standard CD, a signed CD that was sold through his webstore, a digital download (which is discounted to an on-brand $4.20 in his webstore), nine deluxe CD boxed sets that include branded merch and a copy of the CD, and even a “hymnal” Zine/CD package. Metro Boomin, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Soundtrack From and Inspired by the Motion Picture) (Boominati/Republic): With rave reviews and strong early box office returns, the new Across the Spider-Verse is well on its way to becoming one of the year’s biggest movies – and its soundtrack might not be too far behind. Curated by super-producer Metro Boomin, who most recently topped the Billboard 200 last December with his Heroes &Villains set, the similarly star-studded soundtrack features appearances from such big names as Future, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, A$AP Rocky, Coi Leray, Nas and Swae Lee. The set does not yet have a physical release – it is available for digital download — but it should stream enough to still be a major factor on the chart, with three tracks still in the top 20 of Spotify’s Daily Top Songs USA chart as of Wednesday. It should also get a nice boost from the mid-week drop of a deluxe edition of the album, boasting an extra six tracks and additional appearances from Dominic Fike, Becky G, Shenseea and more hitmakers. IN THE MIX Foo Fighters, But Here We Are (Roswell/RCA): The first Foo Fighters album since the shocking death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in early 2022, But Here We Are is led by the Rock & Alternative Airplay-topping single “Rescued,” and has received some of the strongest reviews of the band’s career. The album is not expected to stream in huge numbers, though, and is available in fewer variants than some of its competition: just in black vinyl, white vinyl, CD and cassette versions and as a digital download. Enhypen, Dark Blood (Belift Lab/Genie/Stone): Stray Kids aren’t the only Korean boy band expected to make a big impact on the Billboard 200 this week – there’s also septet Enhypen, who previously hit No. 6 on the chart with 2022 EP Manifesto: Day 1. Their new six-track set Dark Blood was released digitally on May 22, but this chart week brings its physical release – which, like 5-Star, includes 17 collectible CD packages (with a number of store exclusives) that contain artist-branded merch, some of which is standard across all packages and some randomized. Moneybagg Yo, Hard to Love (Roc Nation/Bread Gang/N-Less/Collective Music Group, Interscope): Moneybagg Yo was set to release new mixtape Hard to Love the previous Friday, but decided not to go up against his “little baby Taylor” and her Midnights reissues. He’s still going to have his work cut out for him rising above the glut of new releases this week, particularly without any kind of physical release – but the Memphis rapper has enjoyed regular success on the Billboard 200 in recent years, with his last three albums all hitting the chart‘s top five, and 2021’s A Gangsta’s Pain reaching the top spot.

Stray Kids’ ‘5-STAR’ Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart Plus: Jelly Roll, ENHYPEN, Metro Boomin's "Spider-Verse" soundtrack, Foo Fighters and Moneybagg Yo all bow in top 10.
By Keith Caulfield
06/11/2023Stray Kids lead a busy week in the top 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated June 17), as the pop group debuts at No. 1 with 5-STAR. It’s the Korean act’s third chart entry, and third to debut at No. 1, following MAXIDENT and ODDINARY, both in 2022. The new album launches with 249,500 equivalent album units earned in the United States in the week ending June 8, according to Luminate. That marks the fourth-largest week, by units earned, for any album in 2023. Further, of its starting unit sum, album sales comprise 235,000 — the largest sales week for an album this year, and the biggest for any title since Taylor Swift’s Midnights sold 1.14 million in its first week (Nov. 5, 2022-dated chart). Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200 albums chart, five other titles arrive in the region: Jelly Roll’s Whitsitt Chapel starts at No. 3; ENHYPEN’s Dark Blood bows at No. 4 after its CD release on June 2 (it was issued via streamers and digital download on May 22); Metro Boomin’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack flies in at No. 7; Foo Fighters’ But Here We Are starts at No. 8; and Moneybagg Yo’s Hard to Love enters at No. 10. With six debuts in the top 10, the region hosts the most new arrivals in over two and a half years, since the Oct. 10, 2020-dated chart, when six albums also began in the top 10. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new June 17, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (June 13). For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of 5-STAR’s 249,500 equivalent album units earned, album sales comprise 235,000, SEA units comprise 14,000 (equaling 19.55 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks) and TEA units comprise 500. As Stray Kids have seen their first three entries on the Billboard 200 all debut at No. 1, the last act also to have its first three chart entries all debut atop the list was Harry Styles, with his first three solo albums: Harry Styles (2017), Fine Line (2019) and Harry’s House (2022). Like many K-pop releases, the CD edition of 5-STAR was issued in collectible CD packages (18 total, including exclusives for Barnes & Noble, Target, Walmart and a signed edition in the group’s webstore), each containing a standard set of bonus items and randomized elements (photo cards, mini posters, sticker sets, photo books). There were also four alternative digital versions of the album, sold only in the act’s webstore, each containing the base song tracklist, but with alternative covers and bonus voice memos from individual members of the eight-member group, each selling for $6.99. Effectively all of 5-STAR’s first-week album sales were CDs (98%; 231,000), with about 2% from digital album sales (about 4,000). The set was not available in any other retail format (such as vinyl or cassette). 5-STAR is mostly in the Korean language, but includes some English lyrics. It is the 19th mostly non-English language album to hit No. 1, and the third of 2023, following Karol G’s Mañana Será Bonito (one week, March 11 chart) and TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s The Name Chapter: Temptation (one week, Feb. 11). Stray Kids have yet to chart a song on the U.S.-based Billboard Hot 100 songs chart (through the most recently published list, dated June 10). The act has notched four entries on the Billboard Global 200, and seven titles on the Billboard Global 200 Excl. U.S. chart, which rank the most popular songs globally, and globally excluding the U.S., respectively. Morgan Wallen’s former leader One Thing at a Time is a non-mover at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 117,000 equivalent album units earned (down 7%). Jelly Roll rocks in at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with Whitsitt Chapel, starting with 90,000 equivalent album units earned — his biggest week yet and first top 40-charting release. (He previously logged three albums, none going higher than No. 97.) Of the new set’s first-week units, album sales comprise 63,000, SEA units comprise 25,000 (equaling 33.09 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise 2,000. Whitsitt’s album sales were aided by three vinyl LPs (including a color variant exclusive for Walmart), a standard CD, a signed CD sold through Jelly Roll’s webstore, a deeply-discounted digital album (only $4.20 for a limited time during the tracking week in his webstore), nine deluxe CD boxed sets that included branded merch and a copy of the CD and a “hymnal” Zine/CD package. ENHYPEN notches its second top 10 on the Billboard 200, and the Korean pop group’s highest charting effort yet, as Dark Blood bows at No. 4 with 88,000 equivalent album units earned (also the act’s best week yet by units). Of its first-week units, album sales comprise 85,000, SEA units comprise 3,000 (equaling 3.79 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. Like many K-pop releases, the CD edition of Dark Blood was issued in collectible CD packages (17 total, including a number of retailer-exclusives), each containing a standard set of bonus items and randomized elements. Dark Blood’s debut on the Billboard 200 comes only after its CD was released, as its digital album and streaming album both dropped on May 22. Swift’s chart-topping Midnights falls 1-5 on the Billboard 200 with 83,000 equivalent album units earned (down 70%) and Lil Durk’s Almost Healed dips 3-6 in its second week (67,000; down 46%). Metro Boomin’s star-studded soundtrack to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings in, debuting at No. 7 with 66,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, streaming equivalent album units comprise 62,000 (equaling 83.57 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), album sales comprise 3,000 and TEA units comprise 1,000. It’s the sixth top 10-charting set for Metro Boomin. The album features guests such as Future, Lil Wayne and Nas. Foo Fighters’ But Here We Are — the band’s first album since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in early 2022 — starts at No. 8 with 62,000 equivalent album units earned. It’s the 10th top 10 album for the group. The album was led by the single “Rescued,” which topped both the Alternative Airplay chart (the act’s 11th leader there) and the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart (its 12th No. 1). SZA’s chart-topping SOS drops 4-9 with 51,000 equivalent album units (down 8%). Moneybagg Yo’s Hard to Love is the sixth and final debut in the top 10, as it bows at No. 10 with 51,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 48,500 (equaling 66.56 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), album sales comprise 2,500 and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. It’s the sixth top 10-charting set for the rapper. Plus: Stray Kids, Jelly Roll, Foo Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold, Rancid and Bob Dylan debut in top 10.
ENHYPEN lands its fifth top 10-charting effort on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated June 17) as the Korean pop group’s Dark Blood bows at No. 2 with 85,000 copies sold in the United States in the week ending June 8 (up 31,696%) according to Luminate. It’s the best sales week yet for the act. The album was released as a digital download on May 22, but its CD release on June 2 prompts its debut on the Top Album Sales chart. Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, Stray Kids, Jelly Roll, Foo Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold, Rancid and Bob Dylan all see their latest releases debut. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. The new June 17, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on June 13. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.
Like many K-pop releases, the CD edition of Dark Blood was issued in collectible CD packages (17 total, including exclusives for Barnes & Noble, Target, Walmart, the Weverse store and a signed edition sold through the group’s official webstore), each containing a standard set of bonus items and randomized elements (photo cards, post cards, photo books). Of Dark Blood’s 85,000 copies sold in the week ending June 8, CD sales comprise 99.4% of the sum, with the rest in digital download album sales. The set was not released in any other configuration (such as vinyl or cassette).
At No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Stray Kids blast in with 5-STAR, selling 235,000 copies – the largest sales week ever for the Korean pop act and the biggest for any album in 2023. It’s the third chart-topper for the ensemble, following MAXIDENT and ODDINARY, both in 2022.
The CD edition of 5-STAR was available in collectible CD packages (18 total, including exclusives for Barnes & Noble, Target, Walmart and a signed edition in the group’s webstore), each containing a standard set of bonus items and randomized elements (photo cards, mini posters, sticker sets, photo books). There were also four alternative digital versions of the album, sold only in the act’s webstore, each containing the base song tracklist, but with alternative covers and bonus voice memos from individual members of the eight-member group, each selling for $6.99.
Nearly all of 5-STAR’s first-week album sales were CDs (98%; 231,000), with about 2% from digital album sales (about 4,000). The set was not available in any other configuration.
Jelly Roll jumps in at No. 3 with his first top 10-charting album, Whitsitt Chapel, selling 63,000 copies – his best sales week. Whitsitt’s sales were aided by three vinyl LPs (including a color variant exclusive for Walmart), a standard CD, a signed CD sold through Jelly Roll’s webstore, a deeply discounted digital album (only $4.20 for a limited time during the tracking week in his webstore), nine deluxe CD boxed sets that included branded merch and a copy of the CD and a “hymnal” Zine/CD package.
Foo Fighters’ But Here We Are debuts at No. 4 with 55,000 copies sold – the band’s 12th top 10-charting set. It was available in relatively few iterations for purchase – compared to other new albums that bowed the same day. But Here We Are was only released as a standard CD, cassette, digital download an album and two vinyl variants (a black vinyl and a white-colored vinyl). Despite its basic vinyl offerings, it still sold well on wax, with 23,000 of its sales on vinyl (it debuts at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart). The new studio album is the first since the act’s drummer Taylor Hawkins died in early 2022.
Avenged Sevenfold bows at No. 5 with Life Is But a Dream…, selling 28,000 copies in its first week. It’s the sixth top 10 for the rock band. The set’s sales were supported by its availability across a dozen vinyl variants, resulting in 11,000 vinyl sales and a No. 2 bow on the Vinyl Albums chart.
Taylor Swift’s chart-topping Midnights falls 1-6 with 24,000 sold (down 88%).
Bob Dylan’s new Shadow Kingdom starts at No. 7 with nearly 12,000 sold, mostly from CD sales (7,000). The album was only available in three configurations – a CD, digital download album and vinyl LP.
SEVENTEEN’s former No. 1 SEVENTEEN 10th Mini Album: FML dips 3-8 with 9,000 sold (down 27%).
Rock act Rancid rounds out the debuts in the top 10, as its new studio effort Tomorrow Never Comes bows at No. 9 with a little more than 8,000 sold. It’s the second top 10-charting effort for the veteran band.
Closing out the top 10 is the Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3: Awesome Mix Vol. 3 soundtrack, falling 4-10 with 8,000 sold (down 22%).
In the week ending June 8, there were 2.102 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 16.7% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.732 million (up 27.6%) and digital albums comprised 370,000 (down 16.6%).
There were 960,000 CD albums sold in the week ending June 8 (up 59.4% week-over-week) and 762,000 vinyl albums sold (up 2%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 15.480 million (up 6.1% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 21.098 million (up 24.3%).
Overall year-to-date album sales total 45.032 million (up 9.8% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 35.816 million (up 15.8%) and digital album sales total 8.216 million (down 11.1%).

Me side-eyeing my giant stacks of Stray Kids albums..... Between the two of us, my fiance and I bought 20 copies of 5-Star How did you discover them? Where do you hear their music? I’m so damn old. I found them years ago on some random Spotify playlist, liked their music, listened to their albums and fell in. Once you fall into the KPop world you end up adopting many, many bands lol. People buy the albums mostly for the inclusions - kpop albums have so many extras - posters, photocards, many are signed, etc. Fans will trade and sell the inclusions so fans end up with a metric ton of copies. The albums always have different "versions" with different inclusions as well, different pre-order benefits or specific cards depending on the store you're buying from. It's all a bit ridiculous but fun.
