I love that old songs/tracks are re-entering the Hot 100 and are getting popular, but the fact that old catalogues are doing much better than new music right now is a clear sign the industry is dying or slowing down.

I wonder why that’s the case. How can the industry recover from this slowing period? Even TikTok is not influencing the industry the same way it did back in 2019-2021. Right now, the artists getting the most streams are the ones from rural genres. So many people are so nostalgic now that they think the past only matters and the present is irrelevant. That’s why the older songs are getting more streams and less willing to stream new music. Don’t even get me started with radio because I think it’s time to pull the plug since it’s showing no signs of improving.

One way to recover would to be an artist to drop a unprecedent legendary smash iconic hit of the four years into 2020s that gets the entire industry behind that artist. Kind of like with what Lorde and Billie did in the previous decade.

The music industry isn't dying or slowing down just because old catalog songs are becoming popular.

We have this discussion almost every time a song older than 3 years goes viral and it's always the same arguments and always the same evidence used to debunk the arguments. Please go touch grass.

Also we have already had big "legendary" smashes the industry got behind. How else do you think Blinding Lights and As It Was spent 52 weeks in the Top 20?

I would say older songs doing better is just a sign of more and more people streaming and a natural progression. As people grow up, they become less likely to engage in new music and tend to stick to older songs/what they know. The generation/generations who grew up with the internet and start of youtube, spotify etc are now in their 30s and 40s.

Not to mention the upcoming generations will be smaller in size due to people having less children. So you end up with larger numbers of older people streaming a more limited range of music.

Not to say that new music isn't doing anything, as we've had lots of massive hits etc the last few years. Plus the music industry is no where near dying/slowing down - if anything streaming has caused the industry massive growth over the last decade! Just last year industry revenue grew by 9%, driven primarily by streaming.

Old music becoming so huge now has nothing to do with the industry 'dying'. It simply has to do with how accessible old music has now become.

Streaming made all music from all periods all easily accessible, at no individual cost.

20+ years ago, when you had to buy music physically in stores they reserved the vast majority of shelf space for new releases. You weren't going to find an obscure release from 40 years ago at the store. You can now search the most obscure and forgotten songs from 40 years ago online and stream them easily.

Also once you purchased something 1 time, that was it. It was never accounted for how much you kept listening after. Everyone purchased certain classic albums and kept listening to them for years and years. We all have parents and family that kept certain albums in rotation permanently. Now that counts for the charts every week.

A large population always listened to Christmas classics every December, that didn't magically just become a thing the past decade because the charts finally reflect repeated consumption.

Pretty sure older music was probably always a huge part of everyone's listening, it just never was set up chart wise to reflect that.

And in Taylor's case she literally has basically been in a Greatest Hits type mode, by revisiting her entire discography this decade so especially using her as an example doesn't really prove anything about the industry as a whole. Yeah her catalog is pulling numbers like new releases because she is treating her catalog like a new release.

People have always listened to older music. But remember, from the early 90s to the early 2010s those older songs and albums weren't allowed to chart. And there wasn't streaming to show how much people were listening to older music (so if someone bought an older album it only counted as one sale; there was no way to measure how much they were actually listening to it). There just wasn't as concrete a way to track it as there is now.

Something I also think that’s slowing down the charts, is many acts who would likely have strong eras of 2 or 3 big hits haven’t been focused as much on music. Rihanna, Ariana, and Justin Bieber would also likely have new music devoured. Hell even a well managed Britney campaign could likely result in almost a guaranteed hit or two. But these artists all have various reasons to be doing other things.

Something to take into account as well is that the US has an aging population. Children, teenagers and young adults are becoming a smaller and smaller percentage of the population each year, whilst over 65s are becoming a larger percentage of the population each year, and this change is actually happening shockingly fast. So, unless everybody suddenly starts deciding to have 4 children, expect catalogue music to continue to grow in dominance. I'm still very young, but I'm already at the age where I have less interest in new music as I have like 20+ years worth of music I already like.

It’s just a lull. It happens.

Look at the industry in the years post-Disco and pre-MTV. The national news was doing stories about lagging and sluggish products coming out of the music industry.

Then…boom. A new medium arrived that completely changed popular music for decades.
