Surprisingly, this is Beth Orton’s biggest radio hit. Stolen Car only peaked at #7 on AAA in 1999.

Doesn’t do quite as well as Wheels, but not the last time we’ll be ranking Jamie here. His biggest hit went top 5 in 2004.

Not only does Michael Franti break a streak of bottom 5s to escape the bottom 10, but Donavon almost makes the top 40. Kinda insane. Proud of him, this is a good song.

Goo Goo Dolls OUT but you know we’re still gonna rank them a ton going forward. Hopefully they’ll do better than they did here, both songs here are their worst performers to date.

This is by far Robert Randolph’s biggest hit on AAA. I wasn’t familiar with it before, but solid discovery.

EXTRAS:Let's start off with one of my favorite songs of the year from The New Cars feat. Tod Rundgren from Utopia. Not Tonight - The New CarsRic Ocasek was busy on his own 2005 solo release 'Nexterday' of which I kept charting songs from way into 2006, but I was really blown away when this record was released. Had the same dynamic poprock style of the Original Cars and Tod didn't sound to far fetched for the vocals. Even the song's title was a full blown Cars vehicle. Not to spoil the fun, but this might have beat the #1 song I chose for this list. Funny enough The Cars are another band I will usually slot #1 if they appear anywhere on a music list, but Not Not tonight. Learn to Fly - Carbon LeafAnother song I was well aware of was this poprocker. Easy Top 30 for a list I would compile. Foo Fighters - Miracle"The only Foo Fighters song to ONLY chart on AAA--this one didn't do anything on alt or active." Nor my charts for that matter. This was too vanilla for them. back to business. I have one more tank resident that I would love to see appear tonight.60. Evidence - Susan TedeschiDefinitely the one I enjoyed more. Her vocals are good for retro style Blues rock. 59. Little Perennials - Indigo GirlsI'd rather my #95 song appear, but I'll take my #90 especially if it's this song. Not a top tier band for me at all. 58. Fill Me Up - Shawn ColvinI wanted to recall this song, but it still felt like a first time listen. Cute vocals tones. Either way poppy-melodic enough for me to slot in my top 40. Really loved the chorus. 57. Easy - Barenaked LadiesKinda recalled this one. Gave it a decent chart appearance. 56. Again and Again - Jewel Speaking of cute Vocals. Loved Jewels tones. Very nice song. 55. Afterglow - INXSFunny enough there was a song from this band with this new singer that I dug and charted , but it wasn't this song. This "Afterglow" was passable and sounded nothing like an INXS song, but I gave it a pity Top half slot. You Want a great INXS song featuring J.D. Fortune ,go listen to "Devil's Party"54. Shine - Trey AnastasioThis was fun. have no idea who this soul is, but this was very catchy. 53. I Know Why - Sheryl CrowWon't usually slot Sheryl this low, but this was kinda drab and tired sounding for her style. Easily one of the least eventful songs I have heard from her. 52. In the Sun - Michael Stipe & ColdplayColdplay can get pretty gooey with the ballads, but this has to be them at their most vanilla. pass. 51. Better Days - The Goo Goo DollsI charted a few of this 2006 album. The two singles that followed this one went top 10 on my charts. This one was alright as an introduction song. 50. I’m So Gone - Jackie GreeneThis one was alright. Had some real interesting guitarworks. 49. Tired of My Tears - Susan TedeschiDidn't care for this one as much as "Evidence". The backup vocals were a bit too much. Meaning she could have carried the song on her own. I probaby would have liked it more too. 48. Betterman - John Butler TrioDefinitely like the one we ranked in the prior year way more than this one. 47. Jealous of the Moon - Nickel CreekThis is surely my least favorite vibe in AAA lists. More anti-me than this is hard to get. 46. Conceived - Beth OrtonTwo of my least favorite songs appearing back to back. "Rankdown fun". 45. Get Your Way - Jamie CullumThis really sounds like another song I really hate, but his vocals make it a bit more tolerable. 44. Move by Yourself - Donavon FrankenreiterThis rocked and grooved at the same time. Very Doobie Brothers. very cool jam. 43. Roll On - The Little WilliesI recognized her vocals, but Norah just didn't do it for me this time around. better luck next time. 42. Stay with You - The Goo Goo DollsOh you guys really suck. I was prepped to finally clear my bottom 10 before loosing a top 10. I also could have stayed intact up into the Top 40. Anyway I was cursed from day one cuz this jam went straight into my top 5 in 2006. Picture perfect Poprock. 41. Thrill of It - Robert Randolph and the Family Band Very cool rockin' jam. Why these guys are dressed up like Run DMC is beyond me, but the jam really rocks and pops in a list like this. Seriously was it too much ask for my last tanker to appear before one of my crown songs?

Ah, so I was right. I am the 1st to lose my number one.
That song Again and again will always remind me of my stay in Canada and my love for a boy named Marc.

{A VERY LONG WORD WALL}#100: Can Van Morrison just...stop being lame? #99: No one could have made this song good. James Blunt sure as hell couldn't. #98: It's more like a cold shower. #97: Yeah, uh, I'm gonna need you to stop trying to spread a message, Jonny. #96: Ziggy, dude, come on, you're better than this...right? #95: On the other hand, I know Five For Fighting is not better than this. This is just his level. #94: I mean...at least it's not the "Sexual Healing" cover? I guess? #93: Baffled that the song itself was just as lame and as dumb as the title. #92: Love that Amos basically started out bad and then gradually became more mid with flashes of goodness. #91: Whenever I hear this song when I'm having a bad day, I want to smash things. #90: One of John's most lame songs. #89: This is more an indictment of how poor the bottom of this list was than any sort of tangible improvement on Franti's end, but it still probably deserves to be his best performer so far. #88: Ben can't make up his mind. He's either generally fine or boring as all hell. #87: I agree, I'm so tired of Eric Clapton. #86: Eh, they've made worse. #85: He should have just stayed buried in the sand. #84: zzzzzzzz #83: Nah, it's perfectly enough. #82: I'd love for Shawn Mullins to just leave. Any time now. #81: I forgot I ranked this song that high. This really isn't even all that good. God, was this list that poor (for AAA, anyway)?
#80: Typical boring AAA. #79: Not good, but still leagues ahead of "Sing It All Night". #78: Train being bad? Noooooooooooooo #77: I sleep #76: I keep waiting for a Dylan song in these AAA RDs to be better than a boring slog, and it just hasn't happened yet. #75: A far cry from "Radio Nowhere". #74: I love how your anecdote is more interesting than the song itself. #73: In comparison to his other song, this is fine, but he's still capable of better. #72: This is definitely a Los Lonely Boys song, alright. #71: Better than I expected, especially with Clapton attached, especially with it being a slight bit of graverobbing. #70: Speaking of artists who are capable of better, hey, Neil. #69: I expected this to be bad, and it's more just fine than anything. #68: This was definitely here. #67: This is okay, but I'm more intrigued to see how "Catch My Disease" holds up in 05. #66: The good intentions are there, but the song itself is just a mess. #65: Thank god this isn't an Outfield interpolation. #64: Well, this definitely isn't the Jethro Tull song. #63: Yo, guys, can you chill on the horniness? #62: Sorry, James. #61: Well, this has no business being bottom 40...though Mike Doughty being divisive at least makes sense, given past history.
#60: What is bottom ten worthy about this lol #59: I feel like we're going to get better Indigo Girls songs down the pipeline. #58: Still waiting on a Shawn song to impress me. #57: Uh, this isn't my 90, definitely not...50+ spots off, even lol #56: I expected worse here, tbh. Instead, it's just fine. #55: This sure is a song made by the husk of INXS. #54: Was hoping to enjoy this more than I did, but it kind of just drags on a bit too much. #53: *yawn* Okay, sure, Sheryl, go on ahead. #52: Okay stuff, but man, when you get these two together, it should be more than just "okay stuff". #51: Fully expected this to be the lower one, and it deservedly is. #50: I'm definitely so gone, too, because this barely making the top half, when my 90 is still here, is, uhhhhhhhh #49: I would have taken either of her songs here doing better than "True", so, of course, neither get there. #48: Dropped this by three with a song that's barely outside of my top half, that's fun. #47: Why does this, of all songs, have the third highest SD? #46: Ehhhhhhh #45: Definitely a downgrade from "Wheels". #44: Deservedly his new best performer by a wide margin, surprisingly decent stuff from him. #43: Yeah, after the Wyclef song, I don't think I'm going to be ranking a Norah song low going forward. #42: Shocked this one isn't higher, but I'm glad it's not. Probably a fine song, but work radio killlllllled it for me. #41: Sure, this song's fine, it can almost make the top 40. Why the hell is "Boston" top 40

Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down - ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) Peak: #34 Weeks on chart: 6
Ever wish Jack Johnson had a bit more of a jam band edge and cringier lyrics? Listen to Fly Between Falls!
Our Country - John Mellencamp Peak: #31 Weeks on chart: 3
Feel like we've ranked Mellencamp a lot here, and we will continue to going forward. Glad he was able to take a break this list though.
Love's Not Where We Thought We Left It - John Hiatt Peak: #33 Weeks on chart: 4
While we haven't actually ranked him here yet, John Hiatt charted on AAA a tonnnn in the late 90s and early 00s (he had 10 top 30s in that time, by my count). This is a pretty decent track from him actually, I'm not typically a huge Hiatt fan.
Lookin' for a Leader - Neil Young Peak: #31 Weeks on chart: 4
I like this one more than the Neil song we actually ranked, has a more classic sound to it & a cool guitar tone.
Love You in the Fall - Paul Westerberg Peak: #33 Weeks on chart: 4
So apparently The Replacements' Paul Westerberg is behind the soundtrack to mid-2000s animated film Open Season. I don't know what to say about that, but this song is way better than I would have expected for a song on the Open Season soundtrack.

Work It Out - Jurassic 5 f/ Dave Matthews Band Peak: #30 Weeks on chart: 5
Hm. Jurassic 5 have definitely done better than this.
If I Were You - Hoobastank Peak: #34 Weeks on chart: 5
I guess if there were a post-Reason Hoobastank to chart on AAA it would be this one. The Reason itself peaked at #14 and Running Away at #22, so don't worry, we will rank the 'stank in retro AAA at some point.
God's Gonna Cut You Down - Johnny Cash Peak: #31 Weeks on chart: 4
Wish we could've ranked this one! I watched the first like half minute of this music video, Kanye, Chris Martin, and Adam Levine are there which is...unexpected.
Help Me, Suzanne - Rhett Miller Peak: #34 Weeks on chart: 7
Hm, Rhett didn't have as many solo AAA hits as I thought. Come Around went to #8 in 2002, but I'm not sure if we'll rank anything else from him. We'll rank stuff from Old 97s a lot more.
Time Zones - Widespread Panic Peak: #32 Weeks on chart: 5
This Widespread Panic song is like, half as long as Second Skin. Would make a joke about it being "half as good" too, but this is actually pretty solid as well! I've never considered myself a huge Widespread fan, but both their songs I've listened to here have me interested in hearing more from them.

60. Evidence - Susan Tedeschi: Oooh I remember first hearing this from Kree Harrison singing this on American Idol and I loved that there, which helped me love the original. I wasn't sure if I would be the highest ranker for this placing this at #13, but I'll take it. Sad that I'm the only Top 20 ranking here, but this is a really fun and enjoyable song. I do wish this was her higher ranked song. 59. Little Perennials - Indigo Girls: Oooh nice glad to have lost my #98 here. Still waiting for my #99 to show up but I'll take it. 57: Easy - Barenaked Ladies: I brought this song down from #75 to #88... even though I ranked this at #15? I wasn't expecting that. I didn't really know about this song but I enjoy a number of Barenaked Ladies songs... so I wasn't surprised to enjoy this song. Also I guess I'm not too surprised that this has the 4th highest SD. Oooh okay, now that I see that the stats were fixed, it makes more sense how I brought this song down from 75 to 88, as I ranked this at #75. I had a feeling my #15 ranking for this wasn't right lol. Anyway, this isn't one of my favorites from Barenaked Ladies and I like a number of other songs from them more. 56. Again and Again - Jewel: I always really enjoy Jewel. While this isn't one of my favorites from her, I still liked this enough to rank it at #22. 55. Afterglow - INXS: Oh wow I had absolutely no idea that Chris Daughtry auditioned for Rock Star: INXS. :o I do remember that show and remember JD Fortune on it and winning the show. Ooh I forgot where I ranked this but I see it was #38. I guess I liked it well enough but it wasn't a major favorite. It's interesting seeing such tight rankings for this song - with no Top 15 or Bottom 15 rankings. 54. Shine - Trey Anastasio: OMG oooh yayyy I got another perfect ranking, as I placed this at #54. Yayy I got no complaints there! 51. Better Days - The Goo Goo Dolls: Aww sad to see this just missing out the Top 50 as I ranked this highly at #16. Aww and just 2 points shy from making it there too. Oooh and I'm the second highest ranker and yayy for Doc Indie Party Rock also ranking this high. It's not one of my very favorite Goo Goo Dolls songs but it's up there and I do really enjoy this. 44. Move by Yourself - Donavon Frankenreiter: Ooh wow I totally forgot about this one but I must have really liked this as I ranked this at #17. So yeah this was a standout for me while listening to the songs here and a nice new discovery. Also really great how he achieved his personal best ranking by a longshot in this game. 42. Stay with You - The Goo Goo Dolls: Ooh of course the Goo Goo Dolls song I like least ranks the highest over the one I like more. I ranked this at #52, so this was a decent/alright song for me but I prefer others from them. 41. Thrill of It - Robert Randolph and the Family Band: Ooh ah wow, I thought I was gonna lose one of my Top 10s so yayy that I didn't but still bummed and sad to lose my #11. Although I'm not too familiar with this, I really liked/loved this song and had to give it a high ranking. Sad to see this miss out making the Top 40 but glad this did well. Oooh wow I'm shocked with both my Year-End closeness as I usually am much higher there and do better there most of the time. But wow my Rankdown closeness of 30.217.... I am just 3 points behind the Bottom 2 or 3 rankers there. So yay I am not too far off. I'm happy that I still got 7 Top 10 songs remaining, which is like a record high for me at the Top 40 stage. But I am sure I'll lose more than half of them come the next update, lmao. And also yayy only 4 Bottom 10 songs left. Again, that's really good for me! Sad to only have 23 Top 50s remaining of the Top 40 but that's more than half so again, that's good.

Hmmm bad news, friend. There's a mistake in the Barenaked Ladies rank. Easy was definitely not in my bottom ten. I ranked it #62.
As for actual commentary:
LET'S GOOOOO the best Jack Johnson song ever made top half! I was so worried for it.
I have now heard two Nickel Creek songs through Pulse rankdowns, and they've both been amazing. I need to listen to that band on my own time.
The John Butler Trio hasn't set the highest standards for me in this series, so I was expecting to be bored when I saw Betterman's length, but it really blew me away! Actually comes out to an interesting composition with some gorgeous guitar parts.

Surprisingly strong showing for BNL here. Had no idea they had a #11 peak as late as 2006
No impact on the results if it’s just mine, but I ranked this #32 instead.

There's some fuckery here clearly--I'll have to investigate once I get home from work

There's some fuckery here clearly--I'll have to investigate once I get home from work It's understandable that some rankings may be off, but I have learned that it doesn't really make all that much difference. Clearly seen that year I put "Lips of An Angel" all the way in my top 3 and it somehow barely scraped the bottom 90-100. I just chalk it as "rankdown fun". Speaking of "rankdown fun" why is my #94 still floating around?

So after those last two errors were brought up, I double-checked mine; #34 isn't my rank for 'Easy' either.
Perhaps two sets of rankings have been switched around accidentally? It could be that all the rankings in the post for #57 are correct, it's just the wrong song.

Reveal post for Easy has been fixed. Sorry for the delay. The rank from American Idiot still seems to be wrong. Also are you sure it still has a high SD?

No, AI's rank is correct, I just didn't move it to the right spot on the list. Accidentally posted the wrong points & SD, but I fixed the post now. Fortunately, no incorrect calculations anywhere, just didn't post correctly. Will start revealing 40-21 shortly!

Hmm these stats look a bit familiar...This is, like, the most 2006 AAA song ever. Interesting this was a top 40 pop hit as well. And now Augustana are OUT of retro AAA, and with their best performance ever (unsurprisingly).
