Will there even be a show if the strike keeps going?

Seeing Lainey Wilson in round 2 for Entertainer is something else. No Miranda...?
Rolling Up the Welcome Mat in there for Album. I would LOVE to see that nominated. It fully deserves to win.
Female is anyone's game (except Maren, I think, sadly). I expect a showdown between Ashley, Kelsea, Carly, Lainey, Carrie, Miranda, and maybe even Megan for the 5 slots. Exciting to see this category so competitive.
Only four of the Single OTY listed are from women, which is disappointing. That said, of the 4 (Tennessee Orange, What He Didn't Do, Heart Like A Truck, Ghost Story) I only see Lainey, MAYBE Megan making it. They're up against the behemoths of Fast Car/TKOLWM/Last Night/You Proof/Thank God/SHMAH Carolina/Thank God/Rock & A Hard Place... this was the year of smash hits and very few weak #1s. Also, I did see "Damn Strait" in there, which I would love to see nominated as Scotty McCreery's first CMA nomination.
Penthouse is sitting in round 2 of Song of the Year and holy s*** it needs to win it.
New Artist will be the fight between Megan Moroney, Jelly Roll, Zach Bryan, and Bailey Zimmerman. Maybe Hailey Whitters can squeak out another new artist win here. Parker McCollum is on that list too and I could see him on the final ballot. I cannot believe Dylan Scott is on the short list (but I just checked, he's never made the final ballot...so he is indeed eligible).
Should be a genuinely interesting year.

I notice that "Fast Car" is in the 2nd round for Song Of The Year. Song Of The Yearrules talk about needing to have original music and lyrics. Do the lyrics just need to be original to the country genre itself? Like, can country artists just record songs from other genres and get SOTY nominations for them? (This is not me sharing an opinion either way, just curious. I'd love to see Tracy Chapman win a CMA award).

Why they don't just combine Vocal Duo and Group is beyond me at this point as I feel like the only relevant duos are Brothers Osborne and Dan + Shay, while for group it's Old Dominion, Parmalee (who won't even get nominated for group, mark my words) and maybe Zac Brown Band.
Also not shocked Miranda Lambert didn't make it to even contention for Entertainer since she is not signed to a label and has been pretty absent in the country music media this year sans her duet with Leon Bridges.

My early nomination predictions:
Entertainer: -Carrie Underwood -Chris Stapleton -Eric Church -Luke Combs -Morgan Wallen
*I wouldn't be shocked to see Lainey Wilson get the female slot. I know this is the first time she's been shortlisted for this category, but she's been the biggest female in the genre during eligibility.
Female Vocalist: -Ashley McBryde -Carly Pearce -Kelsea Ballerini -Lainey Wilson -Megan Moroney
*I have a strong feeling that Carrie & Miranda won't be nominated this year. Between the 2 of them, I think Carrie has a better shot at a nomination and could replace Megan.
Male Vocalist: -Chris Stapleton -Hardy -Jelly Roll -Luke Combs -Morgan Wallen
*I think Kane Brown and Jordan Davis have a good shot at a nomination and could replace Jelly or Hardy. I'm still not sure how voters will feel about Cody Johnson, since outside of touring & "Human" going Top 10 at radio, he's had a pretty quiet year.
Vocal Group: -Little Big Town -Midland -Old Dominion -Parmalee -Zac Brown Band
*I'm really hoping to see Parmalee in this category this year as they've been having quite a bit of single success compared to some of the other groups that are shortlisted.
Vocal Duo: -Brooks & Dunn -Brothers Osborne -Dan + Shay -Maddie & Tae -The War & Treaty
*They really need to combine this category with Vocal Group lol.
New Artist: -Bailey Zimmerman -Jackson Dean -Jelly Roll -Megan Moroney -Parker McCollum
*I have Jackson in for now since he was shortlisted for a lot more categories than I was expecting, but I could see Hailey Whitters taking his spot.
Album: -Bell Bottom Country (Lainey Wilson) -Gettin' Old (Luke Combs) -Lindeville (Ashley McBryde) -One Thing At A Time (Morgan Wallen) -The Mockingbird & The Crow (Hardy)
*I think Jelly Roll is a strong contender for this category and could take Ashley's spot, but voters seem to love Ashley, so I think she'll end up getting the nomination.
Song: -Fast Car (Luke Combs) -Next Thing You Know (Jordan Davis) -She Had Me At Heads Carolina (Cole Swindell) -Thought You Should Know (Morgan Wallen) -Wait In The Truck (Hardy ft. Lainey Wilson)
*It's a long-shot, but I would love to see "Penthouse" by Kelsea Ballerini nominated. Easily my favorite written song of the eligibility period.
Single: -Fast Car (Luke Combs) -Heart Like A Truck (Lainey Wilson) -Last Night (Morgan Wallen) -Rock And A Hard Place (Bailey Zimmerman) -She Had Me At Heads Carolina (Cole Swindell)
*This is one of the tougher categories for me to predict as there are a lot of big hits in contention. I wouldn't be surprised to see "Thank God" or "Wait In The Truck" make it in ("Need A Favor" is obviously a solid pick, but since it's crossing over to pop formats, I think it's a frontrunner for the 2024 awards).
Musical Event: -Save Me (Jelly Roll ft. Lainey Wilson) -She Had Me At Heads Carolina (Remix) (Cole Swindell & Jo Dee Messina) -Thank God (Kane Brown & Katelyn Brown) -Wait In The Truck (Hardy ft. Lainey Wilson) -We Don't Fight Anymore (Carly Pearce ft. Chris Stapleton)
*This was another easy category for me to predict. I could see "At The End Of A Bar" or "Different 'Round Here" sneaking in if voters are really feeling like they need to give Chris Young a nomination or another one for Luke Combs.
Music Video: -Light On In The Kitchen (Ashley McBryde) -Memory Lane (Old Dominion) -Next Thing You Know (Jordan Davis) -Thank God (Kane Brown & Katelyn Brown) -Wait In The Truck (Hardy ft. Lainey Wilson)
*Another tough category for me to predict as there's multiple videos that are in contention. I will say that I'm sad that "Rolling Up The Welcome Mat" by Kelsea Ballerini wasn't eligible. IMO it had the most buzz amongst the other contenders.

Only going to cover the major categories with my predictions. I'd wager that Luke Combs will walk away winning not only Entertainer and Male honors of the year, but also Album and Single. It'll also be very interesting to see if "Fast Car" nabs a nom for Song of which still stands an outside chance of winning.
Entertainer of the Year: Luke Combs (winner) Chris Stapleton Carrie Underwood Morgan Wallen Lainey Wilson
Female Vocalist of the Year: Kelsea Ballerini Miranda Lambert Ashley McBryde Carly Pearce Lainey Wilson (winner)
Male Vocalist of the Year: Kane Brown Luke Combs (winner) Cody Johnson Chris Stapleton Morgan Wallen
Album of the Year: Ashley McBryde - Lindeville Lainey Wilson - Bell Bottom Country Luke Combs - Gettin’ Old (winner) Morgan Wallen - One Thing At a Time Jelly Roll - WHITSITT CHAPEL
Single of the Year: Luke Combs - Fast Car (winner) Lainey Wilson - Heart Like a Truck Cole Swindell - She Had Me At Heads Carolina HARDY f/ Lainey Wilson - wait in the truck Carly Pearce - What He Didn’t Do
Song of the Year: Luke Combs - Fast Car Lainey Wilson - Heart Like a Truck Cody Johnson - Human Jelly Roll - Need A Favor HARDY f/ Lainey Wilson - wait in the truck

I wonder if Carrie sees any benefit from the lack of Miranda support?
Lainey is a shoe-in for Female and barring a major upset she should easily win, but an EOTY nomination would be pretty surprising. She just started headlining and only has a few hits. However, there’s no doubt she’s been the biggest female in Country this past year, and the entire industry seems to adore her - so it’s hard to tell. I have a hard time seeing Carrie and Lainey nominated together, though I’d love to see it. If Carrie is nominated as the sole female, I think she has a decent shot, but I’m not all that confident she’ll be nominated so I’m anxious to see how it all plays out.
I think Carrie has a better shot at a FVOTY nomination without official support behind Miranda, but that could be negated by the overall competitiveness within the category.
Pleasantly surprised “Ghost Story” made the shortlist for Single and Song… but per usual I think that’s as far as Carrie’s songs will go in the process. Nice to see she has sizable support after all these years, nonetheless.

Carrie has 0 momentum and just had the biggest radio flop of her career so while it won’t be surprising to see a FV or Entertainer nom due to legacy, would be shocked if she WON Entertainer this time.

Agreed, but somehow she still makes it to the final rounds with these shows, so there’s steady support despite the lack of momentum. Look, I don’t think anyone but Luke Combs will win. Morgan would if he wasn’t so controversial but I think the CMAs will stray away when it comes to the winner, to someone safer - Combs. I just wonder what this category without Miranda looks like, if we still see two women make the final, or if only one - who? And could either win? Lainey could totally do it with the kind of support she has now, but will the CMA be conservative and wait on her a little longer? And I genuinely think Carrie has a running momentum with regards to industry support, particularly since 2019, so could that ever break through to a win? Then there’s also the totally real possibility that neither get nominated… would be interesting to see the public’s response to that. Anyway, again, it’s Luke’s to lose but Miranda’s absence could .. maybe .. shake things up a bit? I’m very interested to see how these nominations turn out, and I’m hoping for some nice surprises and changes.

I don't think Carrie's lack of EOTY wins has anything to do with Miranda Lambert, Female Vocalist? Sure, but EOTY? Nah. Not to mention as austin pointed out, if there was ever a time for her to win... this year would NOT be it, lol.

Not to mention as austin pointed out, if there was ever a time for her to win... this year would NOT be it, lol. That’s not what I meant to imply necessarily… I don’t think either’s record is related to the other directly. BUT they have been the two dominant female forces in the industry, and I do believe that splitting the pool of voters - who might vote for a woman - between two ladies — impacts their overall chances of winning. So while I don’t think this is the ultimate reason neither has won the CMA EOTY, I believe it could be a legitimate factor in the equation. I think this is the first year since their debut that one and not the other is in contention for a nomination, or at least in the last five years or so, so that’s a good lot of votes to spread around…. I’ll leave it at that. Luke Combs will likely win, but if there’s someone else I’d like to see Kane Brown. He’s been killing it for nearly a decade now (crazy!!!). Lainey Wilson could totally make the category but I’d be surprised based purely on how new her success is. My EOTY prediction: Kane Brown Luke Combs Chris Stapleton Carrie Underwood Morgan Wallen (Wildcard, switch Carrie out for Lainey).

Carrie’s entire tour was within the eligibility period, she had her Vegas residency during this time, she has done several one-off shows/concerts, and even though she wasn’t as prominent on radio, she still had Ghost Story and Hate My Heart on the charts and got tons of recurrent play for If I Didn’t Love You. Plus she still dominates the entertainment industry in general…showing up on covers of magazines, radio/talk shows, etc. So I guess to me it feels like every other year, if not even more so this year, that she deserves to win EOTY. I sure hope she’s at least nominated!

I think this is the first year since their debut that one and not the other is in contention for a nomination, or at least in the last five years or so, so that’s a good lot of votes to spread around…. Yeah, but my thing with that is that it's basically just assuming that them both being female means the people voting for them are more swayed by gender than anything. I would be willing to bet there's just as many voters who would pivot to someone like Luke Combs or Chris Stapleton over Carrie Underwood if their option to vote for Miranda Lambert is taken away. I feel like the average "fan" of Miranda is more likely to favor some of her male contemporaries than Carrie Underwood. I sure hope she’s at least nominated! I love Carrie and agree that she's a very recognizable face for country music and continues to be a strong touring presence, but I wouldn't say she "dominates" the entertainment industry currently. Her last era did pretty damn poorly if we look at it from a numbers perspective (sales, streaming, charts). "Out of That Truck" is going to hopefully give it a nice lift, but D&R was not an era that will carry her to an EOTY win if she's had plenty of years where she WAS on top and still came up short imo. I agree wholeheartedly in her being nominated due to her draw as a legacy act (I mean if fucking Garth Brooks can still pull in nominations and even wins as he has in the past decade...), but I don't really see a case for her to actually win when her male counterparts are outpacing her in pretty much all metrics. I certainly wouldn't be mad at it, but it would be unexpected.

^ Yeah I definitely agree that the album underperforming and being so under-the-radar doesn’t help the cause. Ughh yeah I still just don’t know how she never won during the years when her album was outselling all other artists AND she had a huge radio presence. I always tell myself to be happy she won the ACM EOTY three times but the fact she never won at the CMAs is just such a tough pill to swallow. So I think I just make myself super optimistic about it and hope it can still happen lol

What would make for a perfect night would not only be seeing Luke Combs win Song Of The Year for “Fast Car” but Tracy Chapman actually performing it with him live as well as there to accept the award for an excellent written song.

I would love that, and it truly is an exceptional song. That said, I'm surprised that it's eligible, based on the age of the song (but again, that has nothing to do with my thoughts on the quality of it).

I am sensing a strategy from Kelsea Ballerini's team on landing some nominations this season. She's had a tougher time than ever being nominated now that she's not one of the *only* prominent female artists (thank god) + her small label. The timed rerelease of RUTWM, the live version of Penthouse... all of it screams CMA promo and I'm here for it.
Manifesting FVOTY, SOTY, and AOTY nominations for her.

I know Lainey has had the biggest year for a female artist in the genre, but Kelsea is overdue for a FVOTY win & she's more than earned it especially after the year she's had. I hope they'll continue their streak of awarding a different female artist. Lainey will obviously have many more years of wins ahead of her, but I'm not sure if Kelsea will be able to top this past year she's had.

Lainey is probably the only female that should have a chance for Entertainer of the Year but I’d say Carrie or Miranda might slip in over her. Kane is the most deserving that probably won’t get nominated imo.

^ ML wasn’t in contention in the second round. I see Lainey getting a slot or sadly going back to no females. And despite Kelsea’s year I think the CMAs are pretty political with who they reward and Lainey’s label will get it for her easily. She’s had too big a year. Considering Kelsea leans pop and Lainey is pretty true to country. Just my opinion, it’ll be fun to see play out.
