Fear and Fridayβs will likely be the first Top 40 spoken word hit since when? Pretty sure the last time something like that was in the Top 40 was Bryan McGregor's "Americans" which hit #4 on February 9, 1974 (and #1 on Cashbox). The most widely cited example of a spoken-word hit would probably be Baz Luhrmann's "(Everybody's Free) To Wear Sunscreen" which never made it past #45 in the Hot 100 because there wasn't a CD single for it until the airplay was waining. Billboard has an article listing all the spoken word hits. According to it the last one to hit the Top 40 was "I.O.U." by Jimmy Dean (as in the sausage), which peaked at no. 35 in 1976. The last one before that was in fact "Americans." There was also another version of "Americans" that hit the top 40, by the commentator who originally wrote it, Gordon Sinclair, and it hit #24 the same week that McGregor's version peaked (a third version by country star Tex Ritter, best known today as the father of John Ritter and grandfather of Jason, made #90). Not a lot of the tracks mentioned in Billboard's article hit the top 40 last - only five, with the other two being the no. 7 "Deck of Cards" by future game show host Wink Martindale in 1959, and "King Heroin" by James Brown which in 1972 barely scraped the Top 40 at no. 40. There could be others but I suspect they hit all the spoken word hits that made the top 40 there, since otherwise they list songs that hit the Hot 100 but not the top 40, or that made other charts.

With radio dropping, I think Fast Car missed its chance. If Drake drops, he should easily get a number one. I donβt think I Remember Everything can stay ahead PTTR next week without being sent to radio or staying above 2 million on Spotify. Nicki Minaj is releasing a single next week but that would probably need to go viral like SFG to challenge. Can IRE stay top 2 (or at least top 2 non-Drake songs)? I'm skeptical. It's holding well, but I feel its streaming will fall enough that PTTR, FC, LN, and CS should surpass it. I wouldn't mind being proven wrong, though, it's a fabulous song - probably my second favorite in the (projected) top 10.
