Maren Morris is teasing new music on Instagram. (Weirdly, on Instagram, the second slide says it has no audio for me, but when it's embedded, like below, it does play audio—you can hear her sing "ooh-ooh, do you hear that?") https://www.instagram.com/p/Cw56fbCOHYW

The snippet sounds promising. I hope the full song is a huge bop because Maren is in a pivotal spot where she needs an absolute obvious smash to come back with or she's probably done @ country radio after the pretty catastrophic implosion of her last era. Hopefully she pivots back to what she does best because she delivered two top-tier records and then almost completely abandoned all the elements that made them work and fumbled hard with HQ.

Based on what I read on an article (I think on billboard) today, she may be making a response to Jason Aldean. So it looks like she’s determined to destroy her career

If there's any justice in this world, Jason's fans will cancel this song so hard that she'll get a Hot 100 #1!

Big mouth Maren, just doesn’t know whats best for her. Wouth rather waste her energy on taking shots at other people than just focusing on herself. That actually seems to be a nation wide problem though.
I loved her first album, second album was decent but yeah HQ was only good for me to fall asleep to. Now i’ve reached the point where i just don’t really care anymore. She’s just too negative for my liking these days.
Sad.

I hope she goes back to her debut sound with this one since her last era was such a disaster. She needs a killer uptempo to get things back on track.

She is smart to stoke the Small Town narrative. She has literally no momentum otherwise. I'm not convinced she lost the Aldean battle, rather I'm convinced she was already fumbling through a mismanaged/quieter era and her radio and buzz was already on the decline.
Also, there are a large portion of country of country fans that are so outright disgusted by Aldean and I wonder how many of them are CMA voters considering his ZERO nominations during a busy year (although it will be interesting to see if Small Town is nominated for Single in 2024 [also an election year]).
I am excited for her prospects and agree with the sentiment that this needs to be a surefire hit. The snippet sounds super promising.

It should officially be announced any day, but Maren's lead single to her upcoming 4th studio album will drop this Friday (9/15) and it's called "The Tree". Maren recently taped a CMT Crossroads with Hozier where she announced this news and performed the song (her episode will be out on 9/22). In a recent post, Maren tagged the team behind the song which included Greg Kurstin, Jack Antonoff, Jimmy Robbins, Laura Sisk, and Laura Veltz. {Spoiler} I had a friend at the taping and she said Maren hinted at this project being a departure from country music, and that "The Tree" definitely leaned more Pop.

I’m excited. Asides from how big of a fumble Humble Quest was, Maren is easily my favorite out of the female artists.
I hope her team is about to go all out swinging on this because they have nothing else to lose tbh.

I'll wait until the song is actually released before I comment on it.....But if this is a song going after Jason then I just am puzzled on her thought process. Does she not want to move past this and focus on her music and trying to get hit songs and back in the mainstream? I hope it's just a good song like from her first album.

One of her fan acts posted this. Wearing the same outfit as a CMA win? I wonder if it’s more of a goodbye to country music , and the small mindedness, which isn’t really about Jason but he and his wife are emblematic of it. She’s working with Jack Antanoff, and that’s not really running back to country music with her tail in between her legs. x.com/marensgirls/status/1699894704429764917

I really don't want to lose Maren. I love what she has brought to the genre, and her music is such a breath of fresh air. I do wish that she would just move past the Jason ordeal and focus on her craft and repairing her momentum that was lost during HQ, but if this speculation is true, maybe she doesn't care about trying to be commercially viable in the country music world anymore.

I think we're still at a point were Maren can both continue to tell Jason Aldean and his Blonde Girl to fuck off AND have a successful career in country. But, the music DOES need to be strong. If we get Humble Quest type songs coupled with Anti-Aldean sentiment, then she's done for.
I've always been conflicted on Maren because I enjoy some of her earlier stuff, but her personality always put me off. Interestingly, the Aldean controversy made me like her personality more, but the music output after was bleh.

If Maren is trying to dig her heels in and fight with Aldean she's gonna be done at Country. She's already been polarizing to the mass audience and lost alot of fans the past couple years and album cycle in particular. Seeing how Jason releases a semi-controversial song and the audience takes it to #1 on the Hot100, and she is struggling to get a hit is proof of who the fans are supporting. Whether you agree with it or not its what's happening. It would be wise if she just put out a great song and stopped trying to pick another political fight with another A-list artist. She really needs another "The Bones"...I hope "The Tree" is exactly that. Excited to hear it as I've been a fan of her in the past, even though I had little interest in the HQ era

She's marketing the first two songs as "The Bridge" which to me is at least a good hint of her leaving country music. It's also worth noting that the Columbia label logo is on the cover art vs the Columbia Nashville logo.

Yeah, she's gone. The GIRL era + The Middle was by far her most successful, and it leaned the most pop of the 3 records, so I think this was coming aside from the drama. I'll be happy to hear her on pop radio more and hope her crossover is successful.

^ Didn’t she do a whole press release about staying true to country music, rather than going pop around the time Humble Quest was released. I feel like the thought to pivot probably mostly was caused by the Aldean fued and slightly the luke warm response to humble quest.

I always had a feeling she was fake. I don’t know. It just the way she stares and her facial expressions. If you go to her IG she’s not country at all, she feels like a Hollywood wannabe to me, attached to a “country” label. She never hangs out with the so called POC yet she feels the moral authority to call out other people and call them racist. I always thought The Bones wasn’t country so it’s not a surprise and I don’t think she will succeed better at pop. We’ll wait and see I guess.
PS: I like My Church and the duet with her husband, and maybe a random song in between but I don’t really follow her

So much detail from someone who "doesn't really follow her". What even are so-called POC? This place gets better by the day.
I don't blame her for abandoning the genre (if true) at this point. Hoping these new songs are quality bops.

What I mean by stating “the so called POC” is that it is a concept that’s being used politically, nothing else.

Anyone know if this is being promoted to country radio or pop radio. Or radio at all? I talked to someone on Maren's team via DM and they said there isn't any plans for an immediate radio push. "The Tree" will be the focus track and whatever song does better consumption wise is what they'll go with at radio. {Spoiler} I've heard both songs and I loved them both. "The Tree" definitely screams single material over "Get The Hell Out Of Here" although I liked "Get The Hell Out Of Here" more.
Lyrically it seems like Maren is getting personal again, so I'm not sure how much these songs will connect with the general public, but sonically both songs have some similarities to her previous albums. "The Tree" sounds reminiscent of the "Hero" era, but more guitar-driven, while "Get The Hell Out Of Here" seems like it's a cut from the "Humble Quest" era.

I’m just answering to the replies I got from my post. I’m saying what I think. Just because you don’t like what I think does it mean you have to imply or suggest what I mean by that? Some people were discussing if she was leaving country music after she claimed she was not going to. I express that I never thought she was sincere. That doesn’t mean I don’t like her music or that I hate her.

Maren posted a snippet on TikTok and it’s really good imo. It seems like it’ll be cathartic lyrically and honestly the production doesn’t sound too far off from her Hero sound which is a bit exciting. I could be wrong though because we still don’t have the full song yet.
