In this week's The Contenders, the world's biggest rapper looks to make his usual splash with his latest gargantuan album.
The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming charts dated Oct. 21), Drake seems sure to land one of the year’s biggest first weeks with his latest album For All the Dogs, but will have to do so without much in the way of physical sales.
Drake, For All the Dogs (OVO/Republic): After seemingly countless delays and false starts, Drake’s long-anticipated For All the Dogs finally arrived at 6:00 a.m. ET on Friday morning (Oct. 6). The rapper’s eighth official solo studio album – not counting collaborative sets, compilations, mixtapes or “playlists” — came not only as the superstar rapper was winding down his It’s All a Blur tour alongside Her Loss co-lead 21 Savage, but right before he announced that Dogs would be his last work before an extended hiatus, as he tended to health issues.
If it’s the last of Drake that fans will get for a while, Dogs is certainly plenty: 23 tracks and 84 minutes, including guest appearances from fellow stars J. Cole, Bad Bunny, SZA (again) and of course Savage, among other big-name and rising artists. The album has received mostly unflattering reviews, but has still dominated streaming services, with 12 of its tracks still in the top 25 of Spotify’s Daily Top USA chart, and all 23 tracks still in the Apple Music real-time top 25 — both currently led by the set’s “IDGAF” featuring Yeat, the leading early contender to become the set’s major breakout hit.
The album should not have a ton of competition for the Billboard 200’s top spot next week – it’s more of a question of how big his debut atop the chart will be. It will have to come without help from a physical release: Despite other A-list stars of his level putting increasing emphasis on vinyl and CD sets to help bolster their first-week numbers, Drake continues to be digital-only, likely in large part due to his tendency to make last-minute edits to his albums. Nonetheless, lack of physical product didn’t hold Her Loss from posting over 400,000 units in its first week last year, or Certified Lover Boy from over 600,000 in 2021 – with For All the Dogs likely to fall somewhere between those two sets in its debut frame.
IN THE MIX
NCT 127, The 5th Album Fact Check (SM Entertainment): South Korean pop group NCT 127 has been a strong contender on the Billboard 200 with each release this decade, hitting the chart’s top five with each of their last three albums (2020’s Neo Zone, 2021’s Sticker and 2022’s Baddies). The group hopes to make it four albums in four years with their fifth LP, Fact Check. Sales of the set will be bolstered by multiple CD packages, including retailer-exclusive variants for Target and Walmart, while the group’s official webstore is also selling nine different alternative versions of the album digitally (each with a different cover and an additional unique bonus track) and three deluxe boxed sets, containing a branded piece of clothing or accessory, along with a physical copy of the album.
(G)I-dle, Heat (88 Rising/Cube Entertainment): Elsewhere in South Korea, popular girl group (G)I-dle are also back with a new set, the Heat EP. This set is for sale in multiple collectible physical versions (all CD packages), including retailer-exclusive variants for Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Target, with some containing randomized merchandise contents (including photocards and bookmarks). The quintet hit No. 41 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year with their prior EP, I Feel.
Junior H, $ad Boyz 4 Life II (Warner Music Latina/Rancho Humilde): Junior H has long been one of the most exciting and acclaimed young artists in Mexican music, but his status hasn’t always shown on the Billboard 200, where he’s yet to reach above No. 138. That should change next week with the release of his latest corridos tumbados collection $ad Boyz 4 Life II – his first since gaining extra crossover attention alongside superstar Peso Pluma on hits like “Lady Gaga” and “Bipolar,” both of which are still on the Hot 100 this week. None of those are on his own album, however, which does not include any collaborations – or have any physical versions for sale — but is still expected to stream very well.

www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/drake-for-all-the-dogs-album-number-one-billboard-200-chart-1235442875/Drake Earns 13th No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With ‘For All the Dogs’By Keith Caulfield 10/15/2023 The set scores the largest streaming week of 2023 in the U.S. for any album, with over a half-billion streams for its songs. Drake earns his 13th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Oct. 21), as his new studio effort For All the Dogs debuts atop the list. The set earned 402,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 12, according to Luminate. That marks the fourth-largest week of the year for an album, by units earned. For All the Dogs’ opening frame was almost entirely driven by the streaming activity of its 23 songs. In total, 97% of Dogs’ debut was owed to song streams — adding up to 514.01 million on-demand official streams of those songs in its first week. That results in the largest streaming week of 2023 for any album, and the fourth-largest ever. Strikingly, of the top five biggest streaming weeks four of them were generated by a Drake album. For All the Dogs was released at 6 a.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 6 — slightly off-cycle, as most new albums are released at 12 a.m. ET every Friday. The album was first teased in June, and then on Sept. 6, he announced the album was due to be released on Sept. 22. By Sept. 15, he had pushed that release date back to Oct. 6. Dogs is Drake’s fourth album in less than two years, and third since June of 2022. He released the collaborative Her Loss with 21 Savage in November of 2022, and the solo sets Honestly, Nevermind in June of 2022 and Certified Lover Boy in Sept. 2021. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Oct. 21, 2023-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday (Oct. 17). For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of For All the Dogs’ 402,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 12, SEA units comprise 391,000 (equaling 514.01 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 23 songs), album sales comprise 10,000 (it was only available to purchase as a digital download album) and TEA units comprise a little over 1,000. In terms of total on-demand official streams earned by the album’s songs in its first week, the 514.01 million figure marks the fourth-largest streaming week ever, and biggest of 2023. Here are the top five biggest streaming weeks for an album, by total on-demand streams earned by a set’s collected songs: Drake’s Scorpion (745.92 million in its debut, in 2018), Drake’s Certified Lover Boy (743.67 million in its debut, 2021), Taylor Swift’s Midnights (549.26 million in its debut, 2022), For All the Dogs (514.01 million) and Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss (513.56 million in its debut, 2022). With a 13th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, Drake breaks out of a tie with Swift to solely have the third-most No. 1s on the chart. The Beatles continue to have a record 19 No. 1s, followed by Jay-Z with 14, Drake with 13, and Swift with 12. (Swift’s next album, the re-recorded 1989 [Taylor’s Version], is due to be released on Oct. 27. All 12 of Swift’s full-length studio albums and re-recorded projects from 2008’s Fearless through 2023’s Speak Now [Taylor’s Version] have debuted at No. 1.) The Nos. 2 through 7 albums on the new Billboard 200 are all former No. 1s. Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time dips 1-2 with 72,000 equivalent album units earned (down 3%), Rod Wave’s Nostalgia falls 2-3 (59,000; down 16%), Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts descends 3-4 (nearly 59,000; down 12%), Zach Bryan’s self-titled album is a non-mover at No. 5 (53,000; down 9%), SZA’s SOS is stationary at No. 6 (50,000; down 4%), Taylor Swift’s Midnights climbs 8-7 (42,000; down 2%) and Travis Scott’s Utopia dips 7-8 (40,000; down 12%). Noah Kahan’s Stick Season is back in the top 10 for the first time since June, as it climbs 13-9 with 39,000 equivalent album units (up 26%). The set benefits from activity generated by a recently released remix of the album’s “She Calls Me Back” with Kacey Musgraves. Kahan also additionally gained exposure thanks to Rodrigo’s recent cover of the album’s title track on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. Rounding out the new top 10 of the Billboard 200 is Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Lover, which rises 11-10 with nearly 39,000 equivalent album units earned (down 4%). NCT 127 lands its fourth No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Oct. 21) as the Korean pop ensemble’s new release, Fact Check: The Fifth Album, starts atop the list with 29,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 12, according to Luminate. Also in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, the latest releases from (G)I-DLE, Sufjan Stevens, Van Halen, Drake, Reba McEntire and Roger Waters all debut. Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. (G)I-DLE notches its third top 10-charting effort on Top Album Sales, and its highest charting set yet, as Heat bows at No. 2 with 20,000 sold. Sufjan Stevens also logs his highest charting album, and fourth top 10, as Javelin pierces the chart at No. 3 with 14,000 sold. Olivia Rodrigo’s former No. 1 Guts dips 2-4 with 13,000 (down 13%). Van Halen’s boxed set The Collection II starts at No. 5 with 11,000 sold. The package contains remastered editions of the band’s four Sammy Hagar-era studio albums, along with a disc of rarities.
