too early to call. Year end lists are never gonna be that simple. something big will come out in march or april and then we'll know who is really contending for #1. March/April is usually too late for a song to gather enough points to reach YE #1 these days, since the competition will have been amassing points for almost half the year at that point. Remember that Old Town Road, which only started charting in March/April of that year, was doing more or less 100k points a week at its peak but didn't pass "Sunflower" until September or so. Yeah even As It Was couldn’t catch Heat Waves with a nearly perfect chart run because April is just too late. Big hits don’t reach high point totals anymore (Old Town Road points are basically impossible now) but they have way more stability and can easily camp in the top 20 for a good portion of the year, making it even harder for later hits to compete. If nothing new sticks in the next month or so, the only challenge to Jack or Taylor would be a currently charting future smash like Levitating.

^I thought March/April was the usual peak for YE #1 these days? Blinding Lights, Heat Waves and Last Night all first reached #1 in that month, while Levitating peaked in May but that was also ultra stable when the #1 kept changing hands for like 10 weeks. Although with Billboard's inability to read a calendar that's probably February/March for this year.
I think Lovin On Me passes Cruel Summer in 3-4 months. Hopefully something else passes Lovin On Me (Ariana we're counting on you) or this year will be dry as fuck.

Levitating and Heat Waves were all pretty big already post-holidays. Blinding Lights and Last Night emerged shortly after the new years. And in the 2010s: God’s Plan and Shape of You were released in January. Love Yourself was big front the get-go with Bieber’s album in November 2015. Uptown Funk, Happy, Thrift Shop, and Tik Tok started their ascents around the very end of the previous years. Old Town Road, Somebody That I Used To Know, and Rolling In The Deep are exceptions, as they all blew up around March/April of their years. Even in the 2000s, most year end #1s were either already massive at the start of their year (How You Remind Me, Irreplaceable, Low), blew up in January or February (In Da Club, Yeah!, Bad Day) or were a crossover hit with a slow and steady climb up the chart (Breathe). Hanging By A Moment, We Belong Together, and Boom Boom Pow were exceptions that only got big in the spring. The ‘90s felt like the last time you could really get a year-end #1 late in the calendar year, as we saw with End of the Road, Gangsta’s Paradise, and Candle in the Wind.

Lmao, fucking Lovin’ On Me will be the fakest year end #1 since Love Yourself (and probably of all time since 1991) if it ends up being the #1 song of 2024. I rather have Cruel Summer run until October and rightfully repeat at the top.

It's been doing very well on streaming and I could see it eclipsing First Class as his biggest hit. It's still not guaranteed since longevity matters but idk how any of it classifies it as fake?

I mean so what if it's the first, is the first big hit of the tracking year not allowed to be the year end #1? Should we then call songs like Irreplaceable, Low, Tik Tok, How You Remind Me, Uptown Funk all fake year end number ones cuz they were the first big hits of the tracking year?

This is funny because Love Yourself wasn't the "first new song" or the first new #1 of the 2016 BB year, which was Sorry... Anyway this argument is frankly tired at this point-- any year-end stretch of 12 months will inevitably favor hits at the beginning of the period due to their ability to rack up more points throughout the year, especially with streaming-fueled stability these days. You can say stuff like "Lovin On Me doesn't feel like a hit to me" but at the end of the day that's just Vibes.

Lovin on Me will have the top spot for at least another two weeks because it's consistent all across the board especially on streaming. I don't see how it's run is fake.

Lovin On Me is #1 the same way Last Night was lol. With worse streaming being compensated with more radio potential.

Lovin On Me is #1 the same way Last Night was lol. With worse streaming being compensated with more radio potential. ? its the exact opposite way. last night did not fully take off until march/april and then caught up & beat flowers, kb and anti hero who blew their loads before it. loving on me is not super big, its just first to be released so i fully expect whatever mega hit comes out in march/april or whatnot will repeat the same script, overtaking it towards the tail end. HOWEVER, if there really is no big hit to come out at all, then i'd rather t-swift do the Anti Hero trick, drop 10 McRemixes & get 300k sales, a proper big name feature like ft. selena gomez or whatever, and bag the #1. this would be the easiest YE #1 in a long time and she should take advantage of it, even though again, no way a full year will be that stale or that easy.

With the 21 Savage album bomb coming up, that should at least eliminate the other re-entry contenders that returned after the Holiday season.

Eh, WWIMF?, Need A Favor, Fukumean and Vampire are gonna survive the bomb while Kill Bill wasn't going to make it anyway. Maybe Dance The Night goes but the bomb would have to be large.

Right now, Lovin' on Me is just consistent that it'll stay at the top for a few more weeks barring a collapse or big release.
Also, if Lovin' on Me did top the YE, it'll be the third fourth fifth sixth time a rap song topped the YE after Gangsta's Paradise, In Da Club, Low, Thrift Shop and God's Plan.

Would LOM be the first year end #1 song since How You Remind Me to top the YE while peaking in the previous year?

If chart wise, no, Irreplaceable peaked at 1 in 2006 if you're talking about the calendar year.

Part 1: How I think the Top 100 stands based on my position-based algorithm as of Jan 20, 2024 (which scarily is 25% of the way thru BB calendar year 2024!)
Note: I didn't update this chart last week, so New Pts is a sum of 2 weeks.
Part 2: Finally, with the charts stabilizing, I can project out some 20 weeks ahead (based on songs losing 5% of the previous week's points each until it falls out of the top 50) where these songs are headed on the year end. Obviously, a very rough approximation at this point, and songs that haven't peaked will always be understated. Proj. Year end | Song | Artist | YE Est Pts | 1 | Cruel Summer | Taylor Swift | 7688 | 2 | Lovin On Me | Jack Harlow | 7359 | 3 | Paint The Town Red | Doja Cat | 6065 | 4 | Greedy | Tate McRae | 6003 | 5 | I Remember Everything | Zach Bryan ft. Kacey Musgraves | 5448 | 6 | Snooze | SZA | 5102 | 7 | Last Night | Morgan Wallen | 4550 | 8 | Water | Tyla | 4435 | 9 | Agora Hills | Doja Cat | 4137 | 10 | Fast Car | Luke Combs | 4023 | 11 | Thinkin' Bout Me | Morgan Wallen | 3616 | 12 | Is It Over Now? (Taylor's Version) [From The Vault] | Taylor Swift | 3494 | 13 | Lose Control | Teddy Swims | 3258 | 14 | Rich Baby Daddy | Drake ft. Sexyy Red & SZA | 3245 | 15 | Lil Boo Thang | Paul Russell | 2992 | 16 | White Horse | Chris Stapleton | 2851 | 17 | Stick Season | Noah Kahan | 2807 | 18 | What Was I Made For? | Billie Eilish | 2756 | 19 | First Person Shooter | Drake ft. J. Cole | 2544 | 20 | Flowers | Miley Cyrus | 2461 | 21 | Fukumean | Gunna | 2443 | 22 | Need A Favor | Jelly Roll | 2367 | 23 | Vampire | Olivia Rodrigo | 2292 | 24 | All I Want For Christmas Is You | Mariah Carey | 2162 | 25 | Used To Be Young | Miley Cyrus | 2149 | 26 | Save Me | Jelly Roll With Lainey Wilson | 2102 | 27 | FTCU | Nicki Minaj | 2034 | 28 | Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree | Brenda Lee | 2012 | 29 | Good Good | Usher, Summer Walker & 21 Savage | 1888 | 30 | Dance The Night | Dua Lipa | 1886 | 31 | World On Fire | Nate Smith | 1860 | 32 | Houdini | Dua Lipa | 1821 | 33 | My Love Mine All Mine | Mitski | 1813 | 34 | Jingle Bell Rock | Bobby Helms | 1694 | 35 | Pretty Little Poison | Warren Zeiders | 1684 | 36 | Monaco | Bad Bunny | 1643 | 37 | IDGAF | Drake ft. Lil Uzi Vert | 1430 | 42 | I Know ? | Travis Scott | 1421 | 43 | Kill Bill | SZA | 1377 | 44 | Truck Bed | HARDY | 1269 | 45 | It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year | Andy Williams | 1230 | 46 | Exes | Tate McRae | 1170 | 47 | Wild Ones | Jessie Murph & Jelly Roll | 1166 | 48 | Strangers | Kenya Grace | 1156 | 49 | Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow! | Dean Martin | 1121 | 50 | Sleigh Ride | The Ronettes | 1094 | 51 | Feliz Navidad | Jose Feliciano | 1071 | 52 | La Diabla | Xavi | 1069 |
I've listed all songs projected currently to get over 1,000 points by the end of their chart runs.
If Lovin On Me holds #1 next week, I believe it will pass Cruel Summer, especially if the latter moves down the chart.
