In celebration of the last Beatles single, "Now And Then," I thought it would fun to look back on the last 60 years of the band's long, treasured history. Some of these stats are well known, while others took a bit of research to compile. Whether you're new to their music or old-time fan at heart, some of these facts may very well surprise you. Most of these are coming from the Billboard charts but I've thrown some UK chart info for extra measure. If you guys find anything that I haven't listed, please chime in with more!
1. The Beatles first graced the U.S. charts on August 3, 1963, when their single "From Me To You" bubbled under at #125 and would ultimately peak at #116 the following week on its initial run. Rock musician Del Shannon faired better with his cover, reaching #77 a month before the Beatles entered the charts.
2. In mid-December 1963 when disc jockey Carroll James begins playing "I Want To Hold You Hand" on WWDC in Washington, D.C. The single, yet to be released in the States, sparked high demand from listeners and ultimately led Capitol to release the single ahead of time on December 26, 1963. Estimated sales for the song are roughly 5 million in the U.S. alone, making it the biggest selling single since Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel".
3. Over in the UK, "She Loves You" would become the best-selling single of all-time with nearly 2 million copies sold, a record it would hold until 1977 when surpassed by Paul McCartney's "Mull Of Kintyre." To this day, it remains the 9th best-selling single in UK history.
4. Their first LP, Please Please Me, led the UK Albums chart for 30 consecutive weeks, the most by a non-soundtrack album at the time. The would replace themselves at the top when With The Beatles commanded the chart for 21 weeks beginning in December 1963. Their 51 consecutive weeks atop the UK Albums chart remains a record till this day.
5. The Beatles score their first #1 in the Hot 100 on February 1, 1964. "I Want To Hold You Hand" stays on top for 7 consecutive weeks, only to be replaced by "She Loves You" for an additional 2 weeks. That's not all; the Beatles follow it up with "Can't Buy Me Love," commanding the Hot 100 for 14 consecutive weeks with 3 different singles. This marks the only instance an artist has had three #1 hits in succession atop the chart.
Across the Atlantic, the Beatles would become the only act in the history of the UK Singles Chart to replace themselves ("She Loves You" -> "I Want To Hold Your Hand) until John Lennon did so posthumously in 1981.
6. Beatlemania kicks off on February 9, 1964, the Beatles made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. The Beatles performed "All My Loving," "Till There Was You," "She Loves You," "I Saw Her Standing There," and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" that night as 73 million viewers tuned in from home - a record-shattering audience rating that would stand until 1967 (The Fugitive's finale - "The Judgment").
7. On February 15, 1964, the Beatles became the first rock band to lead the Billboard 200 when Meet The Beatles! displaced the Singing Nun atop the chart. The album would lead for 11 weeks before they replaced themselves with The Beatles Second Album on May 2nd. They'd continue to dominate the chart later in the year when their soundtrack to A Hard Day's Night ruled for 14 consecutive weeks, giving them a total of 30 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 in 1964 - the most by any act in a single year.
8. The Beatles locked up the entire top 5 during the week of April 4, 1964, leading the Hot 100 with "Can't Buy Me Love" in its first week at #1; the song's 27-1 jump stood the biggest jump to #1 until 2002. The following week they'd occupy 7 of the top 40 and 14 of the top 100 songs in the nation. They'd claim these chart records until the 2010's, as the era of streaming would allow for many of these precedents to be broken.
9. What do the Beatles and Michael Jackson have in common (besides publishing rights)?
Vee-Jay's Introducing... The Beatles spawned a total of 5 top 10 hits for the band, a record by any album until Michael Jackson's Thriller produced 7 of its own between 1983 and 1984. They held down the top 2 positions on the Hot 100 and Billboard for 9 consecutive weeks between February 29th and April 25th of that year, a feat that has yet to be matched since.
11. If performing on six #1 hits wasn't impressive enough, Lennon/McCartney would have a total of 7 chart-toppers as songwriters (adding Peter & Gordon's "A World Without Love"). This feat would go unmatched until Barry Gibb wrote seven #1's in 1978 amidst the peak of the Bee Gees' popularity.
12. Between 1964 and 1966, the Beatles connected for a record 6 consecutive #1 singles (not including B-sides) : "I Feel Fine,""Eight Days A Week," "Ticket To Ride," "Help!", "Yesterday," and "We Can Work It Out". This record would be tied by the Bee Gees during the 70's and ultimately broken by Whitney Houston in the 80's. The song that ended the Beatles streak? "Nowhere Man" which would peak at #3 in 1966.

It would jump 8-1 in only its 2nd week and would lead for 15 consecutive weeks. "Sgt. Pepper" is the oldest studio album to cross 10 million copies shipped in the United States. They also had the most #1 albums (13 vs. E.P.'s 8) and the most weeks at #1 (111 vs. E.P.'s 63) on the Billboard 200. They're still the fastest to reach ten #1 singles (1 yr. 8 mo.) and ten #1 albums (3 yrs. 4 mo.).
17. On March 21, 1970, "Let It Be" debuted at #6 on the Hot 100, making it the highest debuting single on the chart until 1995. Upon it's ascent to #1 on April 11th, it became the band's 19th #1 hit, surpassing Elvis Presley's total of 18 in the rock era.
