She should get Brandy and Monica on the remix of The Boy Is Mine.

but I thought this album would decline in streams compared to her past ones. Almost 200k is dope. I think it did decline in streams (day 1 anyway, we'll see for the week) and matching or surpassing the previous album total is because this one has vinyls for sale...or no? General question: we all know she can blow and has a strong voice, but do we need to hear that on every album? No, but to me it feels like we haven't heard it much for several albums now. Plus I don't need it on every track, but to me a dance track like "yes and?" is crying for some fuller vocals (which Mariah gave us on the remix). Something like "Into You" wouldn't hit nearly as hard if she sang it more subdued. Having said that, "yes and?" already sticks out a bit on the album since nothing else has that sound, so I guess singing it that way makes the song fit the album more.

Yeah, I agree that we don't need big vocals on every album but also, it's been multiple albums now since we truly had big vocals outside of a few songs like "my hair".

I love the album! Happy that Ari's back.
Positions wasn't for me apart from 3 songs, and only one I truly cared about (the title track itself).
But, from this album, I already got 7 songs to my playlist: * true story (favourite) * the boy is mine (really like the 2000s r&b vibe here, production and vocals) * don't wanna break up again * we can't be friends (growing with each listen) * bye * imperfect for you * supernatural (though it's currently the weakest for me among these 7)
However, all songs are tolerable apart from yes and. Doesn't make sense why it was the lead 😃 For me, it also killed a bit of the hype initially.
Must also say that, apart from true story, I needed to listen the album twice to make up my mind. So it seems like an album that needs several listens and the songs are growers (imo).
But, wishing the album the best of luck, hope it has legs and we can't be friends is successful so that we could get 3rd single as well.
The video for we can't be friends is awesome by the way. Really enjoy the visual.

“yes, and?” was an absolute outlier, omfg. What an exceptional album. The production, Ariana’s lyrics and vocals…it’s all top notch. This for me is her best album by a country mile. Can’t pick a favorite, but “we can’t be friends” is HIGH on the list, and “don’t wanna break up again,” “supernatural” and the title track are all up there as well. Oh but also “i wish i hated you” too, see this is too great of an album. I hope “we can’t be friends” hits hard at radio and revitalizes the era, because this album deserves to SELL and sell well.

I'm on a three hour bus ride from Dublin to Cork so I'm going to listen to the album in order again and try to rank the songs (excluding the interlude)
1. Bye I've already discussed everything I like about this song, but the harmonies, production and key change are just so good. The last chorus is so lush 2. Supernatural Perfect in every way other than when the last chorus synths kick back in, it's a little jarring and the pay off isn't great 3. Intro (End Of The World) Those harmonies, so beautiful! 4. Yes, And? This has grown on me a lot. I still hate the lyrics and message, but she sounds alive in it, so I'll take it! I also really love the chimes. The Mariah remix is better, though 5. We Can't Be Friends (Wait For Your Love) The chorus synths sound tired, but otherwise I like this song a lot, especially the bridge and outro 6. I Wish I Hated You A little boring but very cute 7. Don't Wanna Break Up Again The production again is super lush, although I'm not a fan of the chorus' vocals. I'm also never really a fan of Ariana swearing 8. The Boy Is Mine I like the instrumental and the verses, but not a fan of her vocals in the chorus or that little slow down before the chorus kicks in (it's a little jarring) 9. True Story It's fine, but not something I'd replay. Very filler track vibes. Great vocals towards the end, though 10. Eternal Sunshine A little too trap-lite for me and I'm not a fan of the chorus, but it's cute 11. Imperfect For You It's fine I guess, not a fan of the chorus but the verses are nice 12. Ordinary Things Ew, not for me
I only really care for the top 5 songs tbh

No particular order, but I still enjoy the album from start to finish. I'll pick my go to's after a few more listens.

I've sat with and absorbed this album all weekend and she has won me back. I was not really feeling the Positions era at all, aside from the title track and "pov" but I clung to this album on the first listen.
Highlights for me: yes, and? we can't be friends imperfect for you (the SNL performance was *chef's kiss* ) the boy is mine don't wanna break up again supernatural true story

Ariana has done it again for me, she just spoke out what I'm feeling right now - at this point it's lowkey scary how specifically parallel some of her songs are to my life After sitting with this album for the last days I have to say it might be her most cohesive, the highlights don't stand out as much as on other products but that might be because there is no uninteresting song on here although it might not reach the heights of 'Into You' or 'God is a woman' it's a very good album with some major hits (even the interludes are gorgeous) My current ranking 1. supernatural (Pop jam of the album which will likely stay an album track but what a full song, love the post-chorus) 2. the boy is mine (HOT, 'I can't wait to try him' got me slutty) 3. imperfect for you (beautiful, gave me goosebumps) 4. don't wanna break up again 5. we can't be friends (wait for your love) 6. yes, and? 7. eternal sunshine 8. true story 9. bye 10. i wish i hated you 11. ordinary things

Ariana was great on SNL, she really needs to host again. The MR skit had me cackling.
And hearing her sing "What Was A Made For?" without all the gasping... takes notes Billie.

Not ready for my first listen tonight. I have been strategically avoiding my favorite YouTubers and her live performances all weekend and it's been KILLING me just to read about the album of one of my faves without hearing it, but hey...gotta stand on tradition. BPitchfork gave ES a 7.2/10. Say that shit with your chest! (and...) but yeah, I read the review and it reads higher than a 7.2. In fact, it kinda reads like their typical 7.7, so I don't know why they decided to low-ball it. Also, I shudder at the thought of My Nothing being rated above this. Like...in what universe?! Our baby Sweetener continues to be the critical darling, so haters can continue to gag on the yuh. Ariana was great on SNL, she really needs to host again. The ML skit had me cackling. And hearing her sing "What Was A Made For?" without all the gasping... takes notes Billie. Bro don't make me Chris Crocker you when it comes to my fragile, consumptive queen Billie!

I still think the lead single is lukewarm. But for some reason everything else hits for me. It makes me wonder if there’s something wrong with me that I’m connecting with every song except the one she chose to kick off the album with.
Anyway, I also find this to be a much stronger album than Positions, which I haven’t revisited since it’s early months of release. Going back to it might change my mind, but I doubt it.

I don't like this album, but I am glad she released it. I can't remember a time when a pop diva really went all in and was as vulnerable as she is here. It's a raw divorce album. So often these days a lot of female popstars just completely sidestep it outside of a one-off track here and there.
The stand-out for me is We Can't Be Friends. Probably my favorite from her since Break Up With You Girlfriend.

Welp. Fuck me for really wanting this album, I guess. After waiting patiently all weekend while the world heard it, I got a notification that Amazon delivered it to my door, with a picture, at 3:30 PM. I had some errands to run after work, but in the back of my mind, I was like...watch it be stolen and...by the time I got home, eager for my 1st listen, of course it was gone. Been chatting with Amazon for about 30 minutes trying to get another copy sent but it doesn't even look like, per the site, that copies can be sent until next week at the earliest and none of my local stores have it. I am tempted to buy the digital "deluxe" copy, since the vinyl doesn't come with a digital download anyway, but idk. I fucking hate people. Stealing is one of the lowest acts.

Ugh I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’ve had the same thing happen several times within the last year so [PRO TIP!] I started having all of my Amazon deliveries sent to an Amazon locker right up the street from my apartment so I don’t have to stress about them not being there when I get home. People are scummy as hell, and I hope karma is waiting for those that took your vinyl.

Thank you for the kind words! Yeah, I have a package locker also down the street and I got spoiled by having no thefts in a while that I wasn't even thinking about it. I'll vote for anyone in the PMAs who gifts me with a copy of her digital download!

Y'all, I literally asked the girl who took my former job (we still work in the same department) if she could take pity on me and buy the digital download for me and...she did. I gave her the full story and I was like, "I could buy it, but I don't really believe in paying for downloads." Morale of the story: It never hurts to ask for things!
She sounds even more garbled than ever on the first proper song, but then, all of a sudden, it's like...wait...who is THIS Ari??
This album is very...muted. It definitely doesn't feel like a cheap cash grab or something to fill the time until Wicked comes, though. Still, I don't know if the files that she uploaded to her website were low quality, but everything sounds kinda muffled and unfinished. I'm hoping the vinyl sounds better at least. The best things about this album is the vocal arrangement. She really is Mariah's daughter, down to the choice to be subdued. It's giving Caution-era Mariah, which is not a bad thing. Because it sounds very much a product of Ariana and not a bunch of cookie-cutter pop, it is better than My Everything, at least. Time will tell where it lands compared to her others. I dig that it's different for her and is more dreamy and atmospheric. At least none of the songs overstay their welcome; nor does the album itself, for that matter. Short and sweet was appropriate for this one. It actually doesn't even seem as short as it is. I give the album a B, with a potential to grow, maybe.
Ranking:
1. I wish I hated you (I knew I would love it the second it started and...I was right. simple, yet effective and it brings out the best in Ari. this is wayyy too relatable, though. yikes.) 2. true story (the singing at the end, OMG. whew!) 3. the boy is mine (what a throwback! she sounds great on this song.) 4. yes, and? (the way this sounds so much better in the context of the album and becomes an actual highlight. It also sounds different and I can't figure out why, but it definitely sounds better. I don't know if I was just ready for more energy, but everything sounds crisper.) 5. imperfect for you 6. ordinary things (I dig this one a lot.) 7. supernatural (ho anthem!) 8. eternal sunshine 9.. don't wanna break up again 10. we can't be friends (wait for your love) (really can't believe they went with this next when supernatural was a better pop single, but...I hope this does well for her. The papers and pens lyric is so weird, LOL. the Disney ending is my favorite part) 11. intro (end of the world)
12. bye (yup, bye.) 13. Saturn Returns

I just realized that sweetener and thank you, next were only six months apart. Why the rush? A lot happened in her personal life in a short amount of time after the release of 'sweetener' (i.e. Mac Miller died, breaking up with Pete, etc.) so she had a lot to get off of her chest. She went into the studio and basically the songs poured out of her.
