Hi everyone! Inspired by TheOutcast ’s Billboard peak polls, I thought it might be fun to specifically take a retrospective look at where songs peaked on the Mediabase pop radio chart last year. Unlike all the past poll series, since this is a 50 song chart, this will only be a five-week series of 50 polls. Depending on interest, I may also consider doing other recent years.
For those not aware, while Billboard takes into account a number of factors, the difference with the Mediabase charts is that they are solely calculated by how many times the songs are played on the radio across all monitored pop stations. Also unlike Billboard, Mediabase’s chart is a rolling daily chart, but for this poll series, we will only be looking at published peaks.
I also used the Mediabase chart year to determine where the song peaked, which ended on November 5, 2023. There are a few currently charting songs on this list that have achieved higher peaks since that date, but this poll will count their peak as whatever position they were at the end of the 2023 charting year. There were also a few songs that peaked in 2022, but didn’t officially go recurrent until a few weeks into 2023. I’ve excluded any songs that already peaked in 2022 from the poll (They are “I Like You,” “As It Was,” “Sunroof,” “I Ain’t Worried,” “Music for a Sushi Restaurant,” “Betty” and “Vegas”).
Just for fun, I’m also going to do a “bonus round” where you will get to vote on your favorite of the most popular recurrents from 2023. (For those unfamiliar with chart watching, recurrents are the most popular tracks that are no longer on the chart, but still received a high amount of airplay throughout the year). The songs mentioned above that peaked in 2022 but were briefly on the chart in 2023 will be included in the recurrent poll. The winner of the recurrent round won’t get a place in the Winner’s Circle polls at the beginning of each week; this is just a fun extra thing I’m doing.
I'll plan to post two polls per weekday. I’ve traditionally posted them Sunday through Thursday night, but I am going to try posting them in the mornings Monday through Friday (I may switch back to the other way if I find that doesn’t work). Voting for each week's polls will end at 8:00pm CST on Sunday evening. Should there be any ties, all winning options will advance to the Winner's Circle round. If necessary, a tiebreaker round can occur if there is a tie for the final poll of the series. There are a couple polls, where only a single song peaked at that position during the year. In these cases, the song will automatically advance to the next round.
Unlike the previous poll series, there was no list to pull from; I had to research and create the list myself. That said, if for some reason I made any sort of error in recording what a song’s peak was, please feel free to let me know. (I won’t bite! <3)
I feel like I’ve talked more than enough at this point with my essay-length explanation of the rules lol, so I’ll just say I’m excited to host this poll series and I hope you enjoy it! :)
