I remember the R&B chart having practically a new #1 every week back in the 90s. 30+ weeks at #1 is crazy!
Radio in general has gotten slower, but the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay records this decade are mainly because that chart combines Urban & Urban AC airplay (as it always has) and nowadays they are near each other in audience for songs. Urban AC ofcourse moves way slower in general like all AC-related formats, so now the R&B songs that are played on the format have way longer chart runs.
Today the #1 on Urban has 17 million audience, while the #1 on Urban AC has 11 million.
This week 20 years ago, #1 on Urban has 75 million audience, while the #1 on Urban AC had 18 million.
So when combining the charts in the past for R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, Urban format by far carried the chart and has a much faster turnover so songs couldn't spend anywhere near as long at the top.
It's like if AC format suddenly had 50 million for the #1 song like Pop/Top 40 has 50 million for the #1 song, then suddenly we would see old Pop songs chart WAY longer at #1 and top 10 on the Overall Radio chart. Flowers is still #2 on AC, so if it had near the same audience as a #2 on Pop (+32 million more) it would be top 2 on overall.
