Taylor Swift Spends Second Week at No. 1 on Billboard 200 With ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

Plus: PARTYNEXTDOOR debuts in the top 10.

Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department holds steady at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (dated May 11) in its second week, earning 439,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending May 2 (down 83%), according to Luminate. It arrived atop the chart a week ago with a massive 2.61 million units.

Though the set declines by 83%, it still logs the biggest second-week, by units, for any album since Adele’s 25 tallied 1.162 million units in its second week (Dec. 12, 2015-dated chart, down from its 3.482 million in its opening week).

Also in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200, PARTYNEXTDOOR debuts at No. 10 with PARTYNEXTDOOR 4 (P4).

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. Of The Tortured Poets Department’s second-week unit sum of 439,000, SEA units comprise 330,000 (down 52%, equaling 428.54 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), traditional album sales comprise 107,000 (down 94%) and TEA units comprise 2,000 (down 82%).

The rest of the top four titles on the Billboard 200 comprises former No. 1s. Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time rises 4-2 (69,000 equivalent album units; up 8%), Future and Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You falls 2-3 (61,000; down 11%) and Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter dips 3-4 (52,000; down 21%). Noah Kahan’s Stick Season rounds out the top five, stepping 7-5 (41,000; down 10%).

Wallen’s chart-topping Dangerous: The Double Album climbs 11-6 (its highest rank since it was No. 5 on the July 29, 2023, chart) with 40,000 equivalent album units (up 9%). Benson Boone’s Fireworks & Rollerblades glides 8-7 (40,000; down 1%), Future and Metro Boomin’s former leader We Still Don’t Trust You falls 6-8 (39,000; down 28%) and SZA’s chart-topping SOS is steady at No. 9 (nearly 39,000; down 1%).

Closing out the top 10 of the new Billboard 200 is PARTYNEXTDOOR and the arrival of his PARTYNEXTDOOR 4 (P4) at No. 10. It launches with 37,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 34,000 (equaling 45.94 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), album sales comprise 3,000 and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. PARTYNEXTDOOR4 marks the third top 10-charting set for the singer/songwriter and producer, following PARTYMOBILE (No. 8 in 2020) and PARTYNEXTDOOR 3 (P3) (No. 3 in 2016).

The Fame is a 15 year old album

365 weeks is just 7 years

It is been off the chart many times before, sometimes for months at a time

I doubt it. It’s just that the best-selling album with a song gets the weekly SPS for charts, and The Fame or The Fame + Monster usually *always* outsells The Fame Monster (EP).

More than likely last week was just a rare week where the EP sold more. It could’ve been discounted on iTunes and promoted on the front page causing this. Usually what happens if there isn’t some Vinyl/physical pressing.

There is nothing going on.

He released a Live Album in March from his tour, then recently dropped the physicals two weeks ago.

When the Live album got physicals it became his best selling album of the week and further split the SPS units between his music.

Starboy fell out the top 100 because Die for You, Starboy, and I Feel It Coming were on the Live album and it earned those units and debuted.

Starboy is now back top 100 because I presume it is now back to outselling the Live album and gots those songs back towards its weekly units.

The Highlights, Live album, Beauty Behind the Madness, and DawnFM all have so many same songs that at this point it’s just hurting them all by having majority of their biggest songs split between each other.

It's Swift's 11th album to sell at least 2 million copies in the U.S.

Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department has surpassed 2 million in U.S. album sales after only two weeks in release, according to Luminate. It’s her 11th album to sell at least 2 million copies. (Album sales are purchases of both digital download albums and physical albums, like CDs, cassette tapes and vinyl LPs.)

In the week ending May 2, The Tortured Poets Department sold 107,000 copies, which was down 94% compared to the previous week, its opening frame, when it bowed with 1.914 million sold. Sales of the album loom so large, the 2.021 million it has sold in its first two weeks represents 8.4% of all U.S. album sales year-to-date (24.05 million).

The Tortured Poets Department is the first album to sell at least 2 million copies in its first two weeks since Adele’s 25 sold 4.49 million in its first two frames in 2015 (3.378 million in its first week, and 1.112 million in week two).

On Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart dated May 11, The Tortured Poets Department remains at No. 1 for a second week.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units.

The rest of the top 10 on the Top Album Sales chart is busy with debuts and re-entries, led by the list’s top debut, Grateful Dead’s Dave’s Picks, Volume 50: The Palladium, New York, NY – 5/3/77 at No. 2. The live archival set sold 20,000 copies in its first week.

Lafey’s Bewitched re-enters the list at No. 2, a new high, with 15,000 sold – her best sales week yet. It jumps back onto the list following a deluxe reissue on April 26, dubbed Bewitched: The Goddess Edition, with four bonus tracks. The new Goddess Edition was released on six vinyl variants, a CD, cassette, digital download and a streaming album.

A trio of debuts round out the top six:

Yung Bleu bows at No. 4 with Jeremy (13,000),

Luke Hemmings’ Boy starts at No. 5 (10,000) and

St. Vincent’s All Born Screaming enters at No. 6 (nearly 10,000).

Taylor Swift’s chart-topping 1989 (Taylor’s Version) falls 4-7 (9,000; down 35%)

Taylor Swift’s Lover drops 3-8 (8,000; down 42%).

ILLIT’s Super Real Me debuts at No. 9 with nearly 8,000, while

TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s former No. 1 minisode 3: TOMORROW rises 11-10 with 7,000 (down 25%).
