She becomes the sixth act with 10 or more leaders on the list.
Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” lifts to No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart (dated May 25).
With the track, from Grande’s Republic Records album Eternal Sunshine, she notches her 10th Pop Airplay leader, becoming the sixth act to amass a double-digit total. Taylor Swift boasts a record 13 No. 1s, followed by Maroon 5, Katy Perry, Rihanna (11 each), Justin Bieber, Grande (10 each), Bruno Mars and P!nk (nine each).
(The Pop Airplay chart, which began in October 1992, ranks songs by weekly plays on over 150 mainstream top 40 radio stations monitored by Mediabase, with data provided to Billboard by Luminate.)
Grande co-wrote and co-produced “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” with Max Martin and ILYA.
Here’s a recap of Grande’s 10 Pop Airplay No. 1s:
“We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love),” one week to date, May 25, 2024 “Die for You” (The Weeknd & Ariana Grande), two weeks, beginning Feb. 11, 2023 “34+35,” three weeks, beginning Feb. 13, 2021 “Positions,” seven weeks, beginning Dec. 26, 2020 “7 Rings,” six weeks, beginning March 16, 2019 “Thank U, Next,” one week, Jan. 26, 2019 “God Is a Woman,” one week, Nov. 10, 2018 “No Tears Left to Cry,” one week, July 21, 2018 “Side to Side” (feat. Nicki Minaj), five weeks, beginning Dec. 24, 2016 “Problem” (feat. Iggy Azalea), two weeks, beginning July 12, 2014
“We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” launched at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated March 23, becoming Grande’s ninth leader. The same week, Eternal Sunshine soared in as her sixth No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
All Billboard charts dated May 25 will update Tuesday, May 21, on Billboard.com.

I know radio is slow, but I am surprised at just how slow they're being with Espresso. It would be nice if radio picked up and streams stayed strong long enough that it might sneak in a week at #1 this summer. Isn't this pretty fast for an artist who isn't a proven hitmaker like Swift or Grande? "Espresso" is only 3 spots behind "Too Sweet" on Top 40 radio, and that one took off 2-3 weeks before "Espresso." "Espresso" has only been on the Hot 100 for a month, and I think in general the rise to top 10 at radio takes longer than a month.

Post Malone's "I Had Some Help," featuring Wallen, is the first song to go top 10 in two or fewer weeks since 2007.

Post Malone, Wallen Soar to Top 10
In its second week on Country Airplay – after it debuted from just one day of play the week before – Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen, hits the top 10 (18-9; 15.8 million May 10-16; up from 10.4 million May 9). The song, a contender for No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated May 25, is Post Malone’s second Country Airplay entry, following his featured turn on the late Joe Diffie’s “Pickup Man” (No. 44, January). Wallen adds his 15th top 10.
“Help” is the first song to reach the Country Airplay top 10 in two or fewer weeks since Garth Brooks’ “More Than a Memory” launched at No. 1 in September 2007. It’s also the first to do so not by Garth Brooks, dating to the chart’s 1990 start.
Songs to Reach the Country Airplay Top 10 in Two or Fewer Weeks:
Garth Brooks, “More Than a Memory,” Sept. 15, 2007, one – the only song to debut at No. 1 Post Malone feat. Morgan Wallen, “I Had Some Help,” May 25, 2024, two Garth Brooks, “It’s Your Song,” Nov. 21, 1998, two Garth Brooks, “Longneck Bottle,” Nov. 29, 1997, two Garth Brooks, “She’s Every Woman,” Sept. 16, 1995, two Garth Brooks, “The Thunder Rolls,” May 25, 1991, two
Of the five songs above prior to “I Had Some Help,” four hit No. 1 on Country Airplay; “It’s Your Song” peaked at No. 9.

MILLION DOLLAR BABY and Not Like Us were so close to breaking Fortnight's record for biggest US weekly streams for a song (39,002,123) Don’t get why Million Dollar Baby’s second version isn’t combined tbh it should effectively have the record.

^ yeah, it has around 43M overall. wcbf is definitely one of her most important songs, it totally changed direction of her career, similar to what Problem and thank u, next did, IMO. Didn't even realize it's already close to 500M on Spotify.

Whats odd though is thriller did hit #7 in just its 2nd week on the entire chart. By far the fastest climbing of the 7 singles. Perhaps it is due to the fact it already had amassed a good deal of airplay when the single was finally released. And then of course it stalled out just a couple weeks later. And yes as a gen xer the video, the dance, the whole thing was definitely a defining moment Right, it jumped to #7 after its debut, not #5 as I said, that was in its 3d week, my bad lol! As for it stalling at #4, I personally think it is likely due to Epic issuing a limited number of 45s (and even less 12'' copies) that sold out relatively quickly. Regarding the discussion about the current chart's reliability, I personally find it to be accurate. However, I'd downplay the weight of single sales (digital and physical), as I find them very antiquated in the 2020's. I feel their only purpose in 2024 is for them to be exploited by fanbases and/or labels and do not reflect the general public in any way. Also, the issue of album bombs occupying half the Hot 100 repeatedly needs to eventually be addressed. Obviously, these tracks are technically consumed but for the most part they represent tracks that are played once by listeners who are simply curious to hear what they sound like. Isn't that comparable to how one played a song sample on iTunes back in the day to decide whether or not to buy it? I'd say it's similar since it is my understanding that playing 30 seconds of a song counts as a stream across all platforms. Now, I'm not advocating that the Hot 100 should adopt the UK formula, which is a bit messy, but eventually this issue should somehow be dealt with because I feel it renders the chart unrepresentative of what is actually popular, which was always what the Hot 100 strived to depict. Btw, wanted to ask you guys about the streaming fluctuations I've noticed on Spotify depending on the day of the week. On certain days the entire chart seems to be gaining streams and on others it seems to be dropping across the board. Do songs tend to gain on the weekend and drop mid-week or something? Or are there more specific days of the week when this occurs? I don't know the details concerning that and was wondering if anyone has more info on it, thanks in advance!

Didn't even realize it's already close to 500M on Spotify. It must be doing really well worldwide as its U.S. streaming hasn't been overly great past the first few weeks. I haven't looked at its international peaks.

Total First Week Streams for Gunna - One of Wun [3/20]: 10,490,210 Total Streams for MILLION DOLLAR BABY: 43,028,713 (would've been #1 with combined streams)
And the craziness of the charts. Not so much from big debuts but from songs just continuing to be smash hits. And in this case one of if not the only case where our Top 3 has over 30M despite not being an album week or Christmas!
Let's start with our #1 as Not Like Us topped for a second week in a row and was up 22.09%, mostly thanks to stability as well as having a full week of tracking compared to last week. It will not stay there as MILLION DOLLAR BABY was up 31.13% and with combined streams would easily be #1, even having more streams than what Fortnight debuted with. But then we get to our #3 and what will likely debut at #1 on the Hot 100: I Had Some Help with 35M streams, easily the biggest debut for a country song of all time. Kinda a shame IHSH will wind up being the country song of the summer as A Bar Song (Tipsy) continued its momentum as it was up 10.76%. Finally, just thought it was curios: while Fortnight had a stable decrease of 6.76%, I Can Do It With A Broken Heart had a smaller drop by 1.59%. This is of course after Taylor included a Tortured Poets Department set for her Eras Tour which restarted last Thursday.
As the beef cools down, as do the diss tracks. euphoria dropped by 40.6% despite staying in the Top 10 while Like that stepped back 12.35%. meet t he grahams surprisingly only was down 25.84% while Family Matters crashed hard 40.67% and Push Ups wasn't far behind with a 37.86% decrease. The VHS version of MILLION DOLLAR BABY is also fading fast as it lost 18.76% in streams.
Elsewhere, Gunna severly underperformed on Spotify with only 3 songs debuting from his newest album, the highest only at #55. Charli XCX actually managed to debut with 360, as did Megan Thee Stallion's new single, we have a new Peso Pluma collab, and a new boring acoustic song went viral, this time from Myles Smith. SI No Quieres No and Miles On It actually gained from their debuts last week, by 9.46% and 12.9% respectively
Notable Gains: Heartless (Morgan Wallen) - 44.06% MILLION DOLLAR BABY - 31.13% Dial Drunk - 25.04% Not Like Us - 22.09% You Proof - 21.78% Thinkin' Bout Me - 18.73% Cowgirls - 17.5% Like crazy - 15.68% She Got the Best of Me - 15.15% Where the Wild Things Are - 14.88% When It Rains It Pours - 14.47% Wind Up Missin' You - 13.13% Miles On It - 12.92% Brown Eyed Girl - 12.9% Last Night - 12.33% Don't Stop Believin' - 11.94% Something in the Orange - 11.62% Revenge - 11.61% Beautiful Crazy - 11.26% A Bar Song (Tipsy) - 10.76% Fast Car - 10.71% Cruel Summer - 10.28% Hey Driver - 9.99% As It Was 9.66%

Plz for the love of god tell me we aren't reviving Morgan Wallen Heartless... The single version sucks, but the version on Morgan's Dangerous album was MUCH better.

It's unusual that we haven't gotten any updated predictions for this week or early projections for 6/1 from TotC yet.
It seems like #1 will be obvious both weeks but I wonder if things ended up closer than anticipated?

I think they said they were going on a hiatus on Twitter if I’m not mistaken.

It's also been observed that debut chart positions and week-to-week jumps of songs early in their runs pre-Soundscan definitely seemed to be mitigated somehow (no songs would debut at #1 for example) and that since Thriller had an extremely high debut and quick rise to its peak for the time (20-7-5-4), it must have sold extremely well its first couple weeks, especially since the single was also certified for a million copies sold. I think if Soundscan rules were in place then, it would have debuted at #1 and then slowly dropped from there. Similar chart runs appear of other mega-selling singles at the time that were known to sell out instantly in its first week, such as We Are the World (over 1 MILLION copies in its first week alone), but only managed a #21 debut and reached #1 not till its fourth week.

Speaking of turnover, I was recently hitting the books about chart years and it looks like the 2024 chart year is on-pace to challenge 2020 (the last year where campaigning was super-easy with physical-digital bundles) for most new toppers in the computerized statistics era:
2020: 21 2007: 18 2021: 18 2000: 17 2006: 17 2011: 16 1999: 15 2024 (so far): 15 (14 + prospectively I Had Some Help) 1992: 14 1998: 14 2008: 14 2010: 14 2009: 13 2019: 13 2022: 13 2023: 13 1995: 12 2001: 12 2004: 12 2013: 11 2018: 11 1997: 10 2012: 10 2014: 10 2016: 10 2017: 10 1994: 9 2002: 9 2003: 9 1993: 8 1996: 8 2005: 8 2015: 8
Of course, it's worth noting that, with how wonky the chart year period is, that 14 includes Cruel Summer, the start of Lovin' on Me, and Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree.

Post Malone notches his sixth leader and Wallen adds his second.
Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen, launches at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. Post Malone achieves his sixth leader with the bitter breakup song and Wallen adds his second.
Notably, the track premieres with 76.4 million official U.S. streams, according to Luminate, the top total for a song in a single week since YouTube song user-generated content was removed from chart calculations in 2020. It surpasses Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” – featuring Post Malone – which drew 76.2 million only three weeks earlier. Prior to the two songs, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” held the mark with 76.1 million in its first frame, as reflected on charts dated Jan. 23, 2021.
“I Had Some Help” arrives as the 1,172nd No. 1 in the Hot 100’s history, and the 80th to debut in the top spot. It concurrently blasts to No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, where it’s established pop star Post Malone’s first leader and Wallen’s eighth.
The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated May 25, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, May 21. For all chart news, you can follow billboard and billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram. Luminate, the independent data provider to the Billboard charts, completes a thorough review of all data submissions used in compiling the weekly chart rankings. Luminate reviews and authenticates data. In partnership with Billboard, data deemed suspicious or unverifiable is removed, using established criteria, before final chart calculations are made and published. Below is a rundown of the latest Hot 100’s top 10.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
