The country music tribute to Tom Petty is out:

Rhiannon Giddens' folk spin is quite innovative and more artists should have taken notice. Otherwise, among the mostly faithful covers, those from Chris Stapleton, Jamey Johnson, Brothers Osborne, Wynonna/Lainey Wilson, Steve Earle and Marty Stuart are worthy of some listens, while those from Justin Moore and The Cadillac Three/BRELAND are the worst. Special dishonorable mention goes to Hillary Scott trying to be Stevie Nicks and failed miserably. Dare if I say most of the featured artists from Big Machine should not be here at all.

An album has just been released on June 28. 17 redone Tom Petty tracks by country artists. It’s a solid record, but they did miss a couple songs, including The Waiting and You Don’t Know How It Feels. And they can’t really call it country if Rhiannon Giddens is on it

Why? Rhiannon Giddens is plenty country, as she is an experienced in the genre and music sounds very throwback and traditional overall.

I have no problem with her inclusion on the album but I also think whatever they were trying to do with the song didn't work. It is one of my favorite Petty songs and this take on the song was brutal to my ears..

With almost 11,000 sold, Petty Country collects the biggest-selling week for any compilation album in well over a year, since A Philly Special Christmas shifted about 100 copies more on the Jan. 7, 2023-dated chart. In terms of country music compilations, no compilation has sold as much as Petty Country in a single week in six years, since Now That’s What I Call Country, Volume 11, debuted with 12,000 copies on the June 23, 2018 chart.
