19. Your Good Thing (Is About To End) - Mable JohnBorn in Louisiana and raised in Arkansas, Mable John was the first female signed to Berry Gordy's Tamla label. She struggled to find success there, eventually leaving the label and spending years singing backup for Ray Charles. Mable then found her way to Stax, and in 1966 released the single "Your Good Thing (Is About To End)". Written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, it peaked at #6 on the soul chart and was later covered by Lou Rawls. Mable was the sister of Little Willie John, who experienced chart success of his own in the 1950s and '60s. She passed away in 2002 at the age of 91. 18. Last Night - The Mar-KeysThe Mar-Keys were the first house band at Stax, and were instrumental in forming the sound of the label's early years. Originally called The Royal Spades, they were convinced to change their name by Stax co-owner Estelle Axton, mother of Charles "Packy" Axton, who played tenor sax for the group. Along with Jerry Lee "Smoochy" Smith and Steve Cropper on keyboards, Wayne Jackson on trumpet, and horn players Floyd Newman and Gilbert Caple, they recorded the single "Last Night" in 1961. It became the label's biggest hit at that time, peaking at #2 on the soul chart and #3 on the Hot 100. Members of the studio sessions also included Booker T. Jones, Al Jackson Jr., Lewie Steinberg, and Donald "Duck" Dunn. Jones, Jackson, Steinberg, and Steve Cropper would eventually start recording as Booker T. & The MG's, with Dunn joining later. 17. Who's Making Love - Johnnie TaylorBorn and raised in Arkansas, Johnnie Taylor started out as a member of the gospel group The Highway Q.C.'s, whose members included Sam Cooke. He later joined The Soul Stirrers and followed Cooke to his label SAR Records. Following Cooke's death Johnnie found his way to Stax. His 1968 single "Who's Making Love" topped the soul chart, peaked at #5 on the Hot 100, and was a million seller, helping him earn the nickname "The Philosopher Of Soul". It was a much-needed hit for Stax following the death of Otis Redding and the end of the label's distribution deal with Atlantic which saw the latter take ownership of every Stax song released during that period. According to songwriter Bettye Crutcher, the lyrics are based on the 1920s song "Who Takes Care Of The Caretaker's Daughter (While The Caretaker's Busy Taking Care)". 16. Baby - Angie Stone feat. Betty WrightBorn in Columbia, South Carolina, Angie Stone got her start as a member of the all-female hip hop group The Sequence. Then she worked with Mantronix and joined the group Vertical Hold. But it wasn't until she went solo in the late '90s that she started hitting the charts consistently. Angie signed with Stax in 2006 and released the album The Art Of Love & War in 2007. The album's lead single, "Baby" featuring soul legend Betty Wright, topped the Adult R&B chart and peaked at #3 on the dance chart and #22 on the R&B chart. 14. Soul Finger - The Bar-KaysThe Bar-Kays were formed in Memphis by James Alexander, Jimmie King, Ronnie Caldwell, Phalon Jones, Carl Cunningham, and Ben Cauley. Their debut single "Soul Finger" was released in 1967. It peaked at #3 on the soul chart and #17 on the Hot 100. The beginning of the song uses the melody of the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb". The Bar-Kays were the backing band for Otis Redding. In December 1967 a plane carrying Redding and most of the members of the group crashed into Lake Monona in Wisconsin. Ben Cauley was the only member on board who survived. Redding, Jimmie King, Ronnie Caldwell, Phalon Jones, Carl Cunningham, and another man, all died. James Alexander was not on the plane as it only had a limited number of seats. 12. Born Under a Bad Sign - Albert KingBorn in Mississippi and raised in Arkansas, Albert Nelson later changed his stage name to Albert King and was often billed as B.B. King's brother (the two are unrelated). He recorded for several labels in the 1950s and '60s before landing at Stax. His 1967 single "Born Under a Bad Sign", written by Booker T. Jones and William Bell, peaked at #49 on the soul chart and is considered his most well-known song. It was covered the following year by the British band Cream. The song is in the Blues Foundation Hall Of Fame and is on the list of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's 500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll. Albert King, B.B. 10. Respect Yourself - The Staple SingersThe Staple Singers were formed in Chicago by Roebuck "Pops" Staples and his children Cleotha, Pervis, and Mavis. Another Staples sibling, Yvonne, joined the group after Pervis was drafted into the army. They recorded for a few record labels throughout the 1950s and '60s, but saw their breakthrough success after signing with Stax. Their 1971 single "Respect Yourself", co-written by Luther Ingram, peaked at #2 on the soul chart and #12 on the Hot 100, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame. It's been covered a few times, most notably by Bruce Willis, whose 1987 version with The Pointer Sisters was a Top 5 hit. Most of the members of the group are no longer with us. Pops died in 2000 from complications following a concussion. Cleotha, who had Alzheimer's for over a decade, died in 2013. Yvonne died in 2018, and Pervis died in 2021. Mavis, the lone surviving member, is still going strong today, releasing the song "Worthy" in June 2024. 9. The Look Of Love - Isaac HayesBorn in Tennessee, Isaac Hayes Jr. started his career as session musician at Stax. He would form a songwriting partnership with David Porter, crafting hits for acts like Sam & Dave. It was in the aftermath of Otis Redding's death and the end of the Stax/Atlantic distribution deal that Isaac began to emerge as an artist. In 1971 he released his take on the Burt Bacharach-Hal David composition "The Look Of Love". First popularized by Dusty Springfield and then Sergio Mendes, Isaac's version peaked at #79 on the Hot 100. It was this version that Ashanti sampled in her 2003 hit "Rain On Me". 8. What a Man - Linda LyndellBorn in Florida, Linda Rowland got her start singing in gospel churches. She eventually found her way to Stax and took on the stage name Linda Lyndell. Her 1968 single "What a Man" peaked at #50 on the soul chart. Soon after the song's release she started receiving threats from the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist groups, and was forced into retirement. It wasn't until after Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue sampled it for their hit "Whatta Man" that Linda began performing again. She performed "What a Man" live for the first time ever at the opening of the Stax Museum in 2003. Apologies to .indulgecountry... I didn't participate because this list was overwhelming to me, but I am observing. My #1 would have either been "I've Been Loving You Too Long" or "You Don't Miss Your Water" ( gonecountry I'm with you!).

7. I've Been Loving You Too Long - Otis ReddingBorn and raised in Georgia, Otis Redding Jr. got his start as a member of Little Richard's backing band The Upsetters. He later toured the chitlin circuit as a member of Pat T. Cake & The Mighty Panthers. In 1962 he drove guitarist Johnny Jenkins to the Stax studio in Memphis for a session. The session with Jenkins didn't go well, so Redding was allowed to record to songs. One of those songs would be his first single on the label, "These Arms Of Mine". And thus, Redding's career at Stax was born. In 1965 he released the single "I've Been Loving You Too Long". Co-written with Jerry Butler and produced by Steve Cropper, it peaked at #2 on the soul chart and #21 on the Hot 100, and is considered one of his signature ballads. It's been covered by the likes of Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Barbara Mandrell, and Ike & Tina Turner. The song is in the Grammy Hall Of Fame.
