what i mean by this is trends in music that influenced a handful of huge hits but barely any minor or moderate ones. basically, folks who attempt this style either end up with massive hits or an underperformance / flop, making it a high risk high reward prospect
what inspired this thread is a revelation that unless there are some songs i'm forgetting about, this applies perfectly to the disco / 80s revival trend of the early 2020s. four of the biggest hits of the decade so far all fit solidly under this umbrella (blinding lights / save your tears / stay / levitating), then on a tier below you have a number of lesser but still massive songs (say so, don't start now, adore you, watermelon sugar, dynamite, big energy, cold heart)
that said, the only examples i can think of for modest hits that fall under this umbrella were arguable underperformers, carried by radio despite bad streaming numbers (one right now, sweetest pie, take my breath), or are songs that fit with the levitatings and adore yous soundwise but actually came out several years before any of the others (one kiss, feels, slide) making them feel more like precursors then part of this wave proper. then you also have a number of songs that channeled this sound but outright flopped (river by miley, im not here to make friends by sam smith, lottery by latto, the other side by justin timberlake / sza, closer by saweetie, the funk wav bounce 2 singles, the dawn fm singles not named take my breath, etc), despite many of them being from established hit makers with momentum and / or not sounding too dissimilar from some of the massive hits i mentioned in the first paragraph
anyways, i know that was a longish write up -- id love to hear if y'all know of any other top heavy musical trends like this one !
