(Sent by Filthy)
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (9.2)
District: (9.7)
Fire: i love that percussion so much, that energy is just infectious. honestly a song with this title really intrigued me so i looked at the lyrics and...holy shit this is a bizarre love triangle 😭 i think i feel most bad tho for the girlfriend here, imagine your bf falling in love with another girl while still with you 😭 yeah, this was definitely my favorite fnd here, incredible song!! (9.0)
Red: A quite good song elevated by one of the single greatest choruses of the 80's. (8.8)
Overall Score: 36.7
After struggling to find your footing early, you two have won the last 2 legs and now have a shot at the gold! You'll get a +0.7 bonus to help make that happen.

The next team in the final leg is...
2. Brockolinis (walt91 & Mayman ) Total Score: 73.1 | Detour Rank: #1 | Roadblock Rank: #3 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.2

Overall Score: 38.5
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by Walt)
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (9.5)
District: (8.4)
Fire: fleetwood mac is like the safest choice you could go with here lol but that doesn't make this not a great song!! i really like lindsey buckingham's vocals and the production sounds really nice and lush(?). i especially like that guitar solo (8.0)
Red: Is it sacrilege to say that I might like this more than "The Chain"? It's very close, but this is just a gorgeous little song. It's basically Dreams 2. (8.5)
Overall Score: 34.4
You two dominated the early part of this race, and now you'll get to prove yourself as the ultimate champions of PAR5, alongside a 0.2 bonus!

Securing the final spot in the top 3 is...
3. LeRom James (maine & rom ) Total Score: 70.8 | Detour Rank: #4 | Roadblock Rank: #2 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.4
Detour Results:
(Four Sided Ride)
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (9.3)
District: (8.6)
BB: (8.8)
Big: Not one of my favorite Chappell songs, but even then it’s still amazing. (8.5)
Overall Score: 35.2
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by James)
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (9.7)
District: (9.2)
Fire: fleetwood mac is like the safest choice you could go with here lol[2]. i'll admit that this song doesn't really grab me as strongly as gypsy (probably because these are two different kinds of songs lol) but i do think this is also great lol. i feel it does take a bit to get going but once it gets going it really becomes a banger, as is tho, the stomping percussion makes it a bit tedious to get through but when it breaks into that faster paced production with the guitar it's a fun time. that said if i did decimal scoring i think i'd rate gypsy higher (8.0)
Red: Slightly overrated, but the climax is untouchable. (8.3)
Overall Score: 35.2
Which means that sadly leaving us are...
4. The Putas (MoD & reputainbow ) Total Score: 67.9 | Detour Rank: #3 | Roadblock Rank: #4 | Bonus From Last Leg: +0.2
Detour Results:
(Four Sided Ride)
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (8.8)
District: (8.8)
BB: (10)
Big: This song absolutely blew me away and I loved all 6 minutes of it. (8.8)
Overall Score: 36.4
Roadblock Results:
(Sent by Rep)
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (8.4)
District: (8.2)
Fire: oh god, i hope i don't cause this team to get eliminated but this really underwhelmed me. i do like this enough, but given i usually like janet jackson's voice, something about her voice here really doesn't click that well for me. doesn't help that i find the chorus grating af. i'll give this song this much tho, i really like the production so it's still a good song, but i wish i liked this way more than i do. (7.0)
Red: Some of Janet's prettiest singing and a well done sample. Not gonna lie, though, Q-Tip has never done much for me here. Well, other than "Joni Mitchell never lies", of course. (7.7)
Overall Score: 31.3
You two never could quite get over the hump this season, and I'm sorry to say that trend continues today and you have been eliminated from the race.
To our top 3, congratulations! You'll be hearing more from us shortly...

[ Advantage: Lost in the Halls ]Congratulations on winning the seven wonders challenge! As teams continue to run to try to continue on the race after the Taj Mahal, you have the opportunity to make their job a little harder: the final leg will feature 4 detour routes, of which teams can choose 2.You can choose one out of four detour routes that each team the must do. District: The detour titles are Great or Wall or Of or China. You may choose two out of four to know the details about, but you can still assign any of the four to each of the either team after you find out about their details.
Wrip: i’m kinda curious to see what the of and china ones are lol
Filthy: We are choosing Of and China.[Wrip and Filthy get sent the descriptions for Of and China.]Wrip: These seem kinda hard, idk. What if we just give one team Of and one team China.
Filthy: sure!
Wrip: We would like to lock in Maywalt for China and Romes for Of.
walt91 and Mayman : One of your two detour choices must be China. rom and maine : One of your two detour choices must be Of.
Good luck teams!
The leg will be uploaded soon.

Challenge #1: Seven Wonders Detour
What is a detour? In these challenges, two themes will be available, and teams will choose to send a song for the one they feel more confident in. Be sure to specify which theme you are sending for! For this detour, there are four themes. You must send a song for two of them. Per wrip & filthy , walt91 & Mayman must send for "China" as one of their two themes, and maine & rom must send for "Of" as one of their two themes.
Detour Themes Great or Wall or Of or China
Great: Calling the wall of China great certainly has driven up how many people want to visit — the region surrounding the wall has received as many as 100k visitors in a single day. For this detour, send a song people are similarly flocking to: one that received at least one million Spotify streams on at least one day in August 2024. OR Wall: The Great Wall of China is, well, a wall used to protect China and divide it from the north. For this detour, send a song by another divided group: a band that's split up. OR Of: The "Of" in "Great Wall of China" indicates where the wall is, obviously. For this detour, send a song where an artist also signifies ownership of the track by mentioning their name in the song. OR China: The Great Wall is just one of many history-lined areas in China, be it the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’An or the Forbidden City in Beijing. For this detour, send a similarly historical song: one released before 1960.
As the Seven Wonders challenge, the team with the #1 detour performance this round will receive the final advantage of the season.
Challenge #2: Roadblock I
What is a roadblock? In these challenges, only one member of the team can come up with a song to send. No consulting. You'll be on the honor system here. Send in your group pm who will do this road block. They will then without consulting their teammate see the theme and send the song in individual pms. tl;dr only one person sends a song, pick who that is in the group pms, then and only then they see the theme.
Challenge #3: Roadblock II
Same roadblock rules apply.
Challenge #4: Final Challenge
As we wrap up the season, it's time to look back and reflect on past legs. For the final challenge, you must send two songs that you have previously sent during the race that you feel represent your time in the race. Consult with your teammate and get your songs in within 60 hours or else your team will NOT have a song in that category and will get an automatic 0/10. Feel free to ask Nick and District any and all questions you may have. The world is waiting for you. Travel safe. Go!

Our bronze medalists are...3. LeRom James (rom & maine )Overall Score: 491.2 | Detour Rank: #3, #5 | Roadblock #1 Rank: #1 | Roadblock #2 Rank: #2 | Final Challenge Rank: #3, #6Detour Results:(Wall)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: (9)District: okay Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo! and Thomas! (8.9)Wheat: Potentially the best song on Discovery? It's close with Digital Love. Either way, all-time classic, love it. (9.7)Gabe: no sorry (6.5)
Preds: not the biggest daft punk fan but this is one of their better songs i've heard (9.2)
Red: Revisiting Discovery after Daft Punk broke up, I realized that I might have been selling this song short. This has aged incredibly well, arguably aging better than just about every other song on Discovery. (9.0)
Samo: (9.1)
Kanubow: It is way too fun seeing the video of all the samples this contains, it’s way too fun to listen to this song too. (9.6)
Born: I guess you could say this caused an insane butterfly effect and inspired Taylor Swift to make 1989 (7.5)
Coffee: YES, love this choice thanks for putting it back on my radar (9.5)
Overall Score: 88 (Of)
Judge's Thoughts: Nick: (8.5)
District: (8.8)
Wheat: I need to listen to Midnight Marauders soon, it's the only classic Quest album that I haven't heard (and I've been in the ATCQ mood a lot lately). Award Tour is great. (8.5)
Gabe: it was nice! (7.5)
Preds: a classic, the tribe are such a cool and iconic group they'll always win points with me (9.6)
Red: Tough call for me here, but I think there's a good argument to be made that this is the definitive ATCQ song. It's my favorite, anyway. (8.6)
Samo: (8.1)
Kanubow: I’m always down for a chill little jam from this group, also for a detour surrounding the artist saying their own name, the line itself sure ain’t a bad choice for the detour either. (9.6)
Born: I suspect whoever sent this had a heart attack after seeing me among the judges but you can relax now. This song is so damn good, I enjoyed my revisit. (8.8)
Coffee: love the flow in this (8.5)
Overall Score: 86.5
Roadblock #1 Results:
(Sent by James)
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (9.3)
District: james? more like jams! (8.6)
Wheat: The Walkmen really dropped one of the best songs of the post-punk revival era and dipped. What ever happened to these guys? (also huh, TIL Hamilton Leithauser was the singer for this band, I did not know that) (9.0)
Gabe: i liked (8.5)
Preds: HOLY SHIT THIS IS HARD ASS MUSIC! saving it immediately (9.8)
Red: Trying to come up with the peak of the post-punk revival movement is a challenge, to be sure, especially when "PDA" by Interpol and "Banquet" by Bloc Party both qualify. But this might very well be that peak. (9.5)
Samo: (8.2)
Kanubow: Oh fuck yeah, this BANGS! (9.8)
MoD: Only a few songs can carry the amount of power and emotion this one does. Majestic instrumental, with an unbelievable drum. Absolutely cathartic. (10)
Overall Score: 82.7
Roadblock #2 Results:
(Sent by Rom)
Judge's Thoughts: Nick: (8.9)
District: (8.2)
Wheat: I don't think I've listened to Art Angels since it was new, but given how much I love the singles from that album I should revisit it soon. I definitely didn't remember this album track, but it's great! Can we have Art Angels-era Grimes back. Don't know what you've got till it's gone. (8.4)
Gabe: i loveeeee the production but her vocal borders on unlistenable (7.0)
Preds: elon musty's X ate here, i've actually never scrobbled anything from her until now but i love the production here (9.3)
Red: You know, as someone who adored Art Angels back in the day, this was never one of the songs I revisited the most. But coming back to it now, it's basically the sister song to the demo version of "REALiTi". It has also held up remarkably well. (8.2)
Samo: (9.0)
Kanubow: I miss when Grimes was actually this consistent. (9.8)
Rep: This was always a highlight from 'Art Angels' for me. The chorus is so euphoric. (9.2)
Overall Score: 78
Final Challenge Results:
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (9.7)
District: loving this one even more (9.4)
Drem: a classic for a reason but it's crazy this isn't even in my Top 3 on the album (8.4)
Josh: This classic! Idk if I consider it their best personally..but that's more of a testament to their discography than this song. (9.0)
Will: (9.4)
BB: (9.3)
Fire: a lot of my comments from the leg i judged in still hold true so i'll quote the relevant parts here: "i feel it does take a bit to get going but once it gets going it really becomes a banger, as is tho, the stomping percussion makes it a bit tedious to get through but when it breaks into that faster paced production with the guitar it's a fun time." i think that sums it up lol (8.0)
MoD: (8.0)
Rep: My favorite song from 'Rumours' is a constant battle between this, "Go Your Own Way", and "Dreams". What an epic song. (10)
Overall Score: 81.2
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (9.4)
District: almost saw these guys play! I enjoy this band’s sound quite a bit (9.2)
Drem: decent if forgettable and merely competent indie rock. Honestly nothing really remarkable. (6.0)
Josh: Sounds good but probably not something I'd ever return to. (6.8)
Will: (8.3)
BB: (8.9)
Fire: the tonal whiplash between "venice bitch" and this holy shit lol. but this is an immediate standout to me, from the first second it just hits you with of energetic guitars. if i had to criticize anything about this song, though, it feels like there's such intense buildup and you expect the payoff and i think the electric guitar riff is supposed to be the payoff? but it just feels like more buildup to me. still, this is a really fun song (8.0)
MoD: (9.5)
Rep: I enjoyed my second listen more this time around compared to when I listened to it for the first time for the 2020 RYM rankdown, but it's still not quite in my personal top tier. (7.9)
Overall Score: 74.8
It might not've been the result you were hoping for, but considering you two didn't even exist as a team a couple legs ago you had an admirable run to get into the top 3!

The runners-up of PAR5 are...2. Bassline Buddies 😊🎶🎵🎶🙈🤘🏼🤘🏼 (wrip & filthy )Overall Score: 495.4 | Detour Rank: #2, #4 | Roadblock #1 Rank: #2 | Roadblock #2 Rank: #3 | Final Challenge Rank: #4, #5Detour Results:(Wall)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: (9.7)District: “i was looking for a job and then i found a job” 😭 honestly mood. they have better but this is still really good (9.3)Wheat: Quintessential jangle pop, and "heaven knows I'm miserable now" is just a good phrase to use in life, you know. (8.5)Gabe: nice and vibey kinda (7.0)
Preds: it's good, not entirely my thing but i enjoyed it for what it is. also pro tip for everyone: next time i'm judging send this charming man if you can you'll get a free 10 from me (8.4)
Red: Sometimes, knowing what a terrible human Morrissey turned out to be, it makes me wonder if Johnny Marr and Mike Joyce succeeded despite Morrissey. (8.5)
Samo: (8.5)
Kanubow: Jeez, this one really got me in the feels, both with Morrissey’s voice and with the production. (9.7)
Born: Ahh this legendary case of “separate the art from the artist”. It sucks that he’s so talented. Beautiful instrumentation as well. (8.9)
Coffee: love love love the smiths (9.5)
Overall Score: 88
(Great)Judge's Thoughts: Nick: (9.6)
District: i don’t use this as much as i should, i enjoy (8.4)
Wheat: Um I like it, I think it's good. Not a song I go hog wild for, but I don't really have any notes on it. (8.0)
Gabe: it’s actually my first time listening to this song in full. It’s very good but not for me I fear (8.0)
Preds: pretty solid song, i don't think it's near best of the year or rankdown winner material or anything like a lot of people think though (9.0)
Red: okay okay okay okay okay okay ohk (9.2)
Samo: (9.0)
Kanubow: I mean, it is still the sleeper classic that’s been impressive everytime I’ve listened to it. (9.7)
Born: Very demure, very mindful (7.3)
Coffee: okokokokok— (9.0)
Overall Score: 87.2
Roadblock #1 Results:
(Sent by Filthy)
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (9.7)
District: loving the vibes on this one (8.9)
Wheat: Love Ellipsis and Long Division, but I actually don't remember this single from Modern Mirror? It's good. Drab Majesty are good. (8.3)
Gabe: stunning choice (9.5)
Preds: i've heard of this artist before from madness, i like this song quite a bit more than that other song i heard from them (9.4)
Red: This song makes me feel like I'm flying. (8.5)
Samo: (8.0)
Kanubow: Gorgeous discovery (9.8)
MoD: Undeniably a banger, I really like the dreamy, ethereal vibe they usually bring, and this one doesn’t fall short of course (8.7)
Overall Score: 80.8
Roadblock #2 Results:
(Sent by Wrip)
Judge's Thoughts: Nick: (8.7)
District: amazing discovery (9.7)
Wheat: II definitely prefer what Japanese Breakfast were doing on Jubilee to their earlier work, but this is still pretty good 2010s dream pop/shoegaze. (7.1)
Gabe: this was a really interesting discovery! (8.0)
Preds: it drags a bit but i love the guitars and the bassline it all sounds pretty neat (8.8)
Red: nd I finish my first time judging PAR with Jbrekkie, and with the peak of their second album. While I think "Be Sweet" is their best song to this point, second place here is nothing to scoff at. (8.5)
Samo: (9.2)
Kanubow: This band continues to prove to me that I REALLY should check out more of their music. (9.8)
Rep: The only first listen for me. Really good, but it's more than likely that I go back to something like "Be Sweet" or "Posing In Bondage" more. (8.0)
Overall Score: 77.8Final Challenge Results:Judge's Thoughts:Nick: (9.3)
District: (8.7)
Drem: a good song but it's never been one of my favorites on Blonde. I've just never really connected with the production or the lyrics the same way I do for White Ferrari, Ivy, Self control, or Godspeed, even though I acknowledge in a vacuum they're good. (7.4)
Josh: Definitely a standout in Frank's discography for me, I do prefer the first half but as a whole it's still a great listen. (8.8)
Will: (10)
BB: (9.7)
Fire: admittedly i'm not all that fond of that weird chime(?) sound in the first half-ish. but the last minute sounds absolutely great. the bass sounds fucking sick through my headphones lol and i really like the atmospheric pianos here too idk this review probably exposes i'm the worst at analyzing music 😭 but shoutout to that transition from the first half to the second half, it just sounds cool to me lol (8.0)
MoD: (9.7)
Rep: Frank Ocean's two-part songs are so good. (9.0)
Overall Score: 80.6
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (9.7)
District: someone said Bill Skarsgard from Temu and this comment lives in the background of my mind (9.3)
Drem: decent if forgettable and merely competent indie rock. Honestly nothing really remarkable. (6.0)
Josh: Once again not really for me but I dig the vibe of this one, very atmospheric. (7.4)
Will: (9.3)
BB: (9.8)
Fire: this is a really solid song! when the piano chords start getting heavier to intensify that psychedelic atmosphere it sounds so cool. george clanton's voice probably doesn't sound that good in isolation but against this heavily psychedelic production it picks up a really dreamy vibe that i really like (8.0)
MoD: (9.0)
Rep: What an epic 2023 RYM rankdown winner. Straight out of the 90s in the best way. (9.3)
Overall Score: 80.3
Which means the WINNERS OF PAR5 ARE...1. Brockolinis (Mayman & walt91 )Overall Score: 501.7 | Detour Rank: #1, #6 | Roadblock #1 Rank: #3 | Roadblock #2 Rank: #1 | Final Challenge Rank: #1, #2Detour Results:(Great)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: (9.2)District: talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing… sorry for the basic 10 but they really put their whole finneussy in this song. it’s giving Billie’s best song (10)Wheat: Easily my favorite song from Hit Me Hard and Soft. In the broader scope of Billie's work, I doubt it's in my top 5, but probably top 10. (8.2) Gabe: cute pick (8.0)
Preds: ik i'm usually a billie hater holy shit this song is so good, might legit be top 5 songs of the year for me (10)
Red: I went on vacation over a month ago, and someone in the group I went with played Billie's second album practically on repeat throughout. Here's what I took from hearing Hit Me Hard and Soft multiple times: This is the best song on the album. I'd actually argue that it's not close. (8.7)
Samo: (9.4)
Kanubow: there’s a reason why this became the big hits from HMHAS, it’s easily one of the best on the album, quite the beautiful nostalgic pop song this is. (9.5)
Born: I suspect whoever sent this went out to celebrate after seeing me among the judges. The lyrics are sweet, the melodies are lovely but I think the production is the big winner here. Big pop artists rarely nail the breezy feelgood sound. I am not surprised that this shined on its own to become Billie’s biggest hit in years. (9.4)
Coffee: controversial take; i’m kinda tired of hearing this everywhere?? obviously it’s a great song, i think it’s just me (8.0)
Overall Score: 90.4
For winning the detour, you earn the final seven wonders advantage: an additional 3 points added to your final score. (China)
Judge's Thoughts: Nick: (8.8)
District: not my cupotea either (7.4)
Wheat: Billie Holiday was really on some next level shit. (9.5)
Gabe: cute but a bit of a bore sorry ms holliday (7.0)
Preds: i completely get why people think this is the best thing ever but this is nothing more than okay to me, never been huge on this style (7.0)
Red: Generally, when it comes to the early days of the music industry as we know it today, I tend to think that the top artists of the early days were more important than great. Billie is the exception. Her songs have remained as potent as ever as they near a century of existence, and this is one of her best. (9.4)
Samo: (8.6)
Kanubow: This song having 1930s mixing is actually kind of what makes this song icl. (9.2)
Born: Billie Holiday’s voice is a treasure. (8.0)
Coffee: not personally my style, but she has a beautiful voice. BUT considering this category?? very neat. (7.8)
Overall Score: 82.7

Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (8.8)
District: not my cupotea (7.7)
Wheat: Um. I kinda hate to say it cause I love AIC, but Rooster has just never been one of my favorite songs of theirs. It's good, just a bit plodding. It has a great atmosphere and sense of space to it, I just wish it was a bit tighter like Would or Nutshell or I Stay Away. (7.6)
Gabe: actually loved this (9.0)
Preds: PEAK MUSIC YEAAAAAaAAAAaAAaAAAHHHHHHHHAAAHHHHHHHH (10)
Red: Not gonna lie, when I saw that this was sent, my first thought was, "Well, someone sent this to get me to give a song a 10". If that was the intent, you succeeded. (10)
Samo: (7.7)
Kanubow: I don’t mind a song about my zodiac animal being as awesomely grungy as this is. (9.4)
MoD: What a performance. Love the slow, stonery tone or the song, the atmosphere it creates really makes the rooster come alive. One of AiC’s best. (9.5)
Overall Score: 79.7
Roadblock #2 Results:
(Sent by Walt)
Judge's Thoughts: Nick: (8.5)
District: (8.9)
Wheat: Frank Ocean is hit or miss for me. Like, there are a lot of well beloved Frank Ocean classics that just do not work for me at all. But lucky for whoever sent this, Swim Good is not among them. Love this song. Has been growing on me even more since we ranked it in 2011 RYM. Not quite sure it's as good as Pyramids, but it's probably my second favorite from him. (8.8)
Gabe: loved it, do not like Franks vocal style unfortunately. (9.0)
Preds: you guys probably know i'm not a huge frank fan at all but my friend showed one to me a few weeks back and i was really impressed, cool that it showed up here (9.4)
Red: This walked so "Pyramids" could run. (8.3)
Samo: (7.5)
Kanubow: No cursed MGK cover can ruin an absolute classic Frank Ocean song like this. (9.5)
Rep: It's annoying that 'Nostalgia, Ultra.' still isn't on streaming yet. This is my favorite single from the project, and the production definitely elevates this for me. (8.4)
Overall Score: 78.3
Final Challenge Results:
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (10)
District: it has to be a ten (10)
Drem: Hope is seeing the love for this song's wonderful production and hook and it not overshadowing the songwriting and its meaning. This gets better every single listen and ages better. (9.7)
Josh: SLAY what you want but SLAY it like you mean it. As time goes on this really is becoming an all time fav for me. (9.7)
Will: (9.6)
BB: (10)
Fire: the song just sounds incredible, i love the dreamy synths and the melodic guitars. just an awesome discovery (was this in another rd i did that i forgot about lol?) for me (9.0)
MoD: (7.0)
Rep: SLAY WHAT YOU WANT! AND SLAY IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT WITH YOUR FISTS FOR ONCE! (10)
Overall Score: 85
Judge's Thoughts:
Nick: (10)
District: if lana ever tops this album then it would have to be the greatest album of all time (10)
Drem: not a song I regularly seek because of its imposing length but still one that's so well-paced, well-written, and well composed. (9.3)
Josh: his song is insane. A motherquake. (9.3)
Will: (10)
BB: (10)
Fire: don't remember when i heard this song first, probably for some rd or whatever lol, but either when i heard it back then i wasn't all that impressed by it (judging by my rym rating as i'm writing this review being 3/5 lol) but relistening to this song for this review i think i can appreciate this for what it is. i still don't think it's great, primarily because lana's vocals feel weirdly like she's trying too hard to be dreamy here and it doesn't flatter the production super well imo, especially when it starts getting more abrasive. also holy shit this song is super long lol, it feels like it starts dragging like 5 minutes in for me. still a pretty good song tho (7.0)
MoD: (8.0)
Rep: It took me a while to get accustomed to the length of this song, but it is quite justified. (8.8)
Overall Score: 82.4

congrats walt and mayman!! but all three teams here played super well this season and any of you would've easily deserved the win!! and thanks nick and district for bringing this game back!!
also never got the opportunity to say this back when we got eliminated so here goes: it's said that two red planets colliding can result in either a bigger red planet (us winning) or the destruction of both planets (us getting eliminated) and as you can see sadly it was the latter that happened for us :(
