Billboard first published an album chart on 24 Mar 1945. Here are the most successful artists on the Billboard Album and Singles Charts from 1945 to 2024, representing the complete Album Era.
1945 Bing Crosby
In 1945, Bing Crosby was the most successful artist on the Billboard Album and Singles Charts.
1946 Bing Crosby
Bing Crosby still dominated the Billboard Charts in 1946 but by a smaller margin then he had in 1945, but he was easily the most successful artist over the first two years of this period.
The only artist who could challenge Bing was Perry Como.
1945 - 1946
1 Bing Crosby
2 Perry Como
1947 Al Jolson
There was a wave of nostalgia for Al Jolson in 1947, due partly to the novelty of Albums. Audiences discovered a new way to enjoy the greatest hits of their favourite artists.
Similarly Glenn Miller, who passed away in 1942, was the most successful artist over this period next to Bing and Perry, entirely to the novelty of Albums.
1945 - 1947
1 Bing Crosby
2 Perry Como
3 Glenn Miller And Orchestra
1948 Vaughn Monroe
Vaughn Monroe dominated the charts in 1948 but only by a small margin. However it was enough for him to rise to 3rd position over this period. 1945 - 1948
1 Bing Crosby
2 Perry Como
3 Vaughn Monroe
4 Glenn Miller And Orchestra
1949 Perry Como
Perry Como emerged from Bing Crosby's shadow to dominate the charts in 1949 by a margin not seen by any artist including Bing in any single year. He was however still 2nd to Bing overall.
Sammy Kaye was an American bandleader and songwriter who became famous in the Big Band Era, and was the 4th most successful artist over this period. He continued to have success up to releasing his signature tune "Harbor Lights", a number-one hit in the late 1950's.
1945 - 1949
1 Bing Crosby
2 Perry Como
3 Vaughn Monroe
4 Sammy Kaye
5 Glenn Miller And Orchestra
1950 Gordon Jenkins
Gordon Jenkins was an influential American arranger, composer, and pianist in the 1940s and 1950s who worked with The Andrews Sisters, The Weavers, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and many other artists. He dominated the charts in 1950, by more than any other artist had, except for Perry Como the year before.
Gordon rose to become the 5th most successful artist.
The nostalgia for Al Jolson continued through to 1950 and he became the 6th most successful artist over this period.
1945 - 1950
1 Bing Crosby
2 Perry Como
3 Vaughn Monroe
4 Sammy Kaye
5 Gordon Jenkins
6 Al Jolson
1951 Les Paul (And Mary Ford)
Les Paul (mostly as a husband-and-wife musical duo with Mary Ford) dominated the charts in year 1951, more so than any other artist except Perry Como in 1949. Paul and Ford were music superstars, putting out 28 hits for Capitol Records between 1950 and 1957.
Gordon Jenkins continued his success and surpassed Sammy Kaye to be the 4th most successful artist over this period.
Doris Day was America's sweetheart and far and away the most successful female artist. She was the 6th most successful artist of this period.
"Guy" Lombardo was a Canadian and American bandleader and violinist, who started performing with his brothers in 1924. He had enormous success since then, selling hundreds of millions of records, but was only the 7th most successful artist over this period.
1945 - 1951
1 Bing Crosby
2 Perry Como
3 Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra
4 Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra
5 Sammy Kaye & His Orchestra
6 Doris Day
7 Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians
1952 Eddie Fisher (& Hugo Winterhalter)
Eddie Fisher was more successful in 1952 than other other artist had been in any single year over this period. Most of his recordings in this period were in collaboration with Hugo Winterhalter.
Nat King Cole started his hugely successful career in the late 1930s but was only the 7th most successful artist of this period.
1945 - 1952
1 Bing Crosby
2 Perry Como
3 Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra
4 Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra
5 Sammy Kaye & His Orchestra
6 Doris Day
7 Nat King Cole
8 Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians
1953 Jackie Gleason
In 1953, Jackie Gleason was on top with easy-listening music like the album "Music for Lovers Only" wherein he conducted an orchestra performing standards.
Gordon Jenkins surpassed Vaughn Monroe to become the 3rd most successful artist over this period.
Likewise Doris Day achieved more success and became the 5th most successful artist of the period.
Les Paul and Eddie Fisher both surpassed Nat King Cole and Guy Lombardo to be among the Top 9 artists of the period.
1945 - 1953
1 Bing Crosby
2 Perry Como
3 Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra
4 Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra
5 Doris Day
6 Sammy Kaye & His Orchestra
7 Les Paul (And Mary Ford)
8 Eddie Fisher (& Hugo Winterhalter)
9 Nat King Cole
1954 Jackie Gleason
Jackie Gleason led the charts again in 1954; the only artist to dominate 2 years in a row since Bing Crosby in the mid 1940's. But he did not lead by a wide margin.
In fact, it was Perry Como who proved himself during 1954, in becoming the most successful artist of the period by surpassing Bing Crosby.
Vaughn Monroe had greater success than Gordon Jenkins in 1954 and returned as the 3rd most successful artist.
Eddie Fisher and Les Paul both surpassed Sammy Kaye and rose amongst the top 10.
Patti Page was only the 3rd female (when counting Mary Ford) to be among the Top 10 artists of this period.
1945 - 1954
1 Perry Como
2 Bing Crosby
3 Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra
4 Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra
5 Doris Day
6 Eddie Fisher (& Hugo Winterhalter)

I hope Billboard's website will improve a feature where you can type an artist's name and you get to see their chart information among other things.

Nat King Cole started his hugely successful career in the late 1930s but was only the 7th most successful artist of this period. 1945 - 1952
1 Bing Crosby 2 Perry Como 3 Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra 4 Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra 5 Sammy Kaye & His Orchestra 6 Doris Day 7 Nat King Cole

But still, for an African American artist to rank at #7 for that time period is truly remarkable. Good for him!

I hope Billboard's website will improve a feature where you can type an artist's name and you get to see their chart information among other things. They have that, but it's not easy to search and navigate, and once you get to the artist's main page, you can only search by chart (Hot 100, Billboard 200 etc.), not by individual song or album, and it only lists the peak, not the entire runs. There are 3rd party websites that have better search features and data though.

I have collated all the charts from Billboard website dating back to 1958 (Singles) and 1963 (Albums), and also the photo-scanned Billboard magazines that are also available on the web dating back to 1945. These lists are my analysis.

1955 Jackie Gleason
In 1955, Jackie Gleason was still the most successful artist, although the extent of Gleason's involvement in his albums' creation has generated debate since their release. But he did set a record of dominating the Billboard Charts for three years in a row, and to become the 9th most successful artist of the period.
Doris Day leapfrogged her way to become the 3rd most successful artist.
Eddie Fisher continued success as a solo artist surpassed his collaborations with Hugo Winterhalter and he was the 5th most successful artist.
Nat King Cole was the 7th most successful artist of the period.
Continued interest in Glenn Miller's music led to his return to the Top 10 of this period.
1945 - 1955
1 Perry Como
2 Bing Crosby
3 Doris Day
4 Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra
5 Eddie Fisher
6 Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra
7 Nat King Cole

9 Jackie Gleason
10 Glenn Miller & His Orchestra
1956 Elvis Presley
In 1956, Rock & Roll and more specifically Elvis Presley had arrived. He was the biggest phenomenon of this period, except only for the even larger success of Eddie Fisher in 1952.
Eddie Fisher continued his success in 1956 and was now the 4th most successful artist.
Jackie Gleason's albums were still charting well by the start of Rock & Roll and he rose to 8th place overall.
Patti Page had notable success in 1956 and entered the Top 10.
Frank Sinatra who had less success in the late 1940's, found a larger audience in the 1950's with his albums, and entered the Top 10 as well.
1945 - 1956
1 Perry Como
2 Bing Crosby
3 Doris Day
4 Eddie Fisher
5 Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra
6 Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra
7 Nat King Cole
8 Jackie Gleason
9 Patti Page
10 Frank Sinatra
1957 Elvis Presley
1957 was an even bigger year for Elvis, when he eclipsed any other artist, including Eddie Fisher, in any other single year since 1945.
Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra were the other notable artists in 1957, as they ascended within the Top 10.
1945 - 1957

2 Bing Crosby
3 Doris Day
4 Nat King Cole
5 Eddie Fisher
6 Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra
7 Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra
8 Frank Sinatra
9 Jackie Gleason
10 Patti Page
1958 Johnny Mathis
By 1958 the first peak of Rock & Roll had already passed, and Johnny Mathis was more successful than Elvis that year. But Johnny was not as successful as Elvis at his peak in 1956 and 1957, and by 1958, Elvis had managed to become the 6th most successful artist over this period.
Frank Sinatra continued to ascended within the Top 10 to become the 5th most successful.

1959 The Kingston Trio
The Kingston Trio in 1959, was the most successful artist since Elvis in his peak years.
Both Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley continued to ascend within the Top 10.
And Nat King Cole managed to surpass Doris Day and be placed 5th.
1945 - 1959
1 Perry Como
2 Bing Crosby
3 Frank Sinatra

7 Eddie Fisher

9 Gordon Jenkins & His Orchestra
10 Patti Page
1960 The Kingston Trio
The Kingston Trio continued to be the most successful artist in 1960.
Elvis Presley continued to ascended within the Top 10.
Mitch Miller became the 10th most successful artist over this period. "Sing Along with Mitch" was a weekly series on NBC television and was basically an extension of Miller's series of Columbia "Sing Along with Mitch" record albums. These albums dominated the charts between late 1950's and early 1960's.

10 Mitch Miller
1961 Mitch Miller
Mitch Miller was a phenomenon in 1961, eclipsing the success of Elvis in his peak years by a small margin. His "Sing Along with Mitch" record albums were huge in 1961 and he became the 5th most successful artist of the period.
Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra continued to ascend the Top 10. Johnny Mathis became the 8th most successful artist.

1962 Chubby Checker
Chubby Checker's success in 1962 exceeded both Mitch Miller and Elvis at his peak. It was the single most successful year by any artist in The Billboard charts over this period.
But Elvis Presley finally proved in 1962 that he was the most successful artist of this entire period.
Johnny Mathis ascended within the Top 10.
The Kingston Trio entered the Top 10 for the first time.

Nat King Cole was ranked #4 by 1957. I agree it was a historic achievement by an African American artist. By 1964, Johnny Mathis was ranked #4.

well the issue is that #1s ought to weight differently depending on the decades, billboard knows this and have made a greatest of all time chart with that taken into consideration. its called something like "top artists of all time 125 years" Yes I know... "Using a formula blending all titles tallied on both the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart (since its inception on Aug. 4, 1958) and the Billboard 200 albums chart (since it became a combined stereo/mono survey on Aug. 17, 1963)" But they exclude albums from 1945 to 1962, and singles before 1958. There seems to be bias at Billboard and by many people, to simply ignore anything released before Rock 'N Roll....

It might be somewhat of a bias, but I think it has more to do with the Billboard Hot 100 (their flagship songs chart) beginning in 1958, and the album chart being a regularly published chart, combining their separate mono and stereo charts, beginning in 1963. It does sound like an interesting concept to include pre-rock 'n roll years, but perhaps you could explain your formula and method of calculation a bit more. Another thing is that those early charts contained a varying number of positions, like the singles chart used to only be 10-15 positions long I think, and the album charts varying from 100 to 150 positions or something like that.

i am surprised Harry Belafonte is not mentioned for 1956 and 57 . he had two albums that combined were #1 for 37 weeks . his highest peaking single was #5 and he had 5 other top 30 singles during that period.

Just a simple explanation of the formula. Number 1 Singles and Number 1 Albums get the same number of points as each other regardless of year. Points are skewed towards number 1 and descend to 2 points for a Top 100 single and 1 point for a Top 200 album. When the charts were shorter pre 1960's, no points are awarded for the entries that do not exist.

1965 The Beatles
Nothing in the Billboard charts over this period can be compared to The Beatles in 1965, except for the even greater success of The Beatles in 1964.
In just two years, The Beatles overtook Ray Charles and entered the Top 10 over this period.
Meanwhile Frank Sinatra rose to become the 2nd most successful artist and Nat King Cole, the 4th, over this period.
1945 - 1965
1 Elvis Presley
2 Frank Sinatra
3 Perry Como
4 Nat King Cole
5 Johnny Mathis
6 Bing Crosby
7 Mitch Miller
8 The Kingston Trio
9 The Beatles
10 Ray Charles
1966 Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
In 1966, Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass dominated the Billboard charts. Only one artist, The Beatles, in one year, 1964, were more successful than Herb Alpert was in 1966.
Meanwhile, Johnny Mathis continued to be successful, and overtook Nat King Cole as the 4th most successful artist.
And The Beatles continued their success as they overtook Bing Crosby as the 6th most successful artist.
1945 - 1966
1 Elvis Presley
2 Frank Sinatra
3 Perry Como
4 Johnny Mathis
5 Nat King Cole
6 The Beatles
7 Bing Crosby
8 Mitch Miller
9 The Kingston Trio
10 Ray Charles
1967 The Monkees
The Monkees were the most successful in 1967, but not as much as Herb Alpert and The Beatles had been over the previous 3 years.
The Beatles' success continued as they overtook Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole.
Ray Charles' success also continued as he replaced The Kingston Trio as the 9th most successful artist.
1945 - 1967
1 Elvis Presley
2 Frank Sinatra
3 Perry Como
4 The Beatles
5 Johnny Mathis
6 Nat King Cole
7 Bing Crosby
8 Mitch Miller
9 Ray Charles
10 The Kingston Trio
1968 Herb Alpert (& The Tijuana Brass)
Herb Alpert had some solo success in 1968, but his recordings with his band kept him on top of the charts in 1968 again, for his 2nd year on top, but he didn't dominate the charts even as much as The Monkees had done in 1967. It was enough however, for Herb to enter the Top 10 successful artists overall.
The Beatles surpassed Perry Como in 1968, to become the 3rd most successful artist over this period, only behind Elvis and Frank Sinatra.
1945 - 1968
1 Elvis Presley
2 Frank Sinatra
3 The Beatles
4 Perry Como
5 Johnny Mathis
6 Nat King Cole
7 Bing Crosby
8 Mitch Miller
9 Ray Charles
10 Herb Alpert (& The Tijuana Brass)
1969 Glen Campbell
1970 Creedence Clearwater Revival
Neither Glen Campbell or Creedence dominated the charts like The Beatles and the artists of the mid to late 1960's.
Ray Charles' success continued as he replaced Mitch Miller as the 8th most successful artist.
1945 - 1970
1 Elvis Presley
2 Frank Sinatra
3 The Beatles
4 Perry Como
5 Johnny Mathis
6 Nat King Cole
7 Bing Crosby
8 Ray Charles
9 Mitch Miller
10 Herb Alpert (& The Tijuana Brass)
1971 Chicago
1972 Roberta Flack
Artists like Chicago and Roberta Flack were most successful in 1971 and 1972, but did not dominate the charts like Glen Campbell or Creedence did in the previous two years.
Roberta Flack did however become the first female to dominate the Billboard Charts in any one year in her own right. Surpassing the achievements of the two Marys: Mary Ford along with Les Paul in 1951 and Mary of Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963.
In fact, it was a great year for females, after the long success of The Supremes during the 1960's, allowed them to become the first female group to enter the Top 10 overall. Diana Ross was often, but not always, billed as the star of the Supremes.
1945 - 1972
1 Elvis Presley
2 Frank Sinatra
3 The Beatles
4 Perry Como
5 Johnny Mathis
6 Nat King Cole
7 Bing Crosby
8 Ray Charles
9 Mitch Miller
10 (Diana Ross &) The Supremes
1973 Elton John
Elton John was on top in 1973, but not by a wide margin.
Ongoing chart success by The Beatles after their break-up finally allowed them to dislodge Frank Sinatra as 2nd overall.
1945 - 1973
1 Elvis Presley
2 The Beatles
3 Frank Sinatra
4 Perry Como
5 Johnny Mathis
6 Nat King Cole
7 Bing Crosby

1 Elvis Presley
2 The Beatles
3 Frank Sinatra
4 Perry Como
5 Johnny Mathis
6 Nat King Cole
7 Bing Crosby
8 Ray Charles
9 (Diana Ross &) The Supremes
10 Mitch Miller

1975 Elton John
Between 1973 - 1975, Elton John was the most successful artist for three years running, equaling the record set by Jackie Gleason in the 1950's. But even at his peak in 1975, Elton was still significantly less successful than The Monkees were in 1967.
Both The Rolling Stones and The Temptations surpassed The Supremes and Mitch Miller as they ascended into the Top 10.
1945 - 1975
1 Elvis Presley
2 The Beatles
3 Frank Sinatra
4 Perry Como
5 Johnny Mathis
6 Nat King Cole
7 Bing Crosby
8 Ray Charles
9 The Rolling Stones

1977 Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac was more successful in 1977 than any artist had been since The Monkees in 1967. But the Bee Gees managed the same feat in 1978 and were themselves the most successful artist since The Monkees.
Meanwhile The Rolling Stones surpassed Nat King Cole as the 6th most successful artist.
1945 - 1978
1 Elvis Presley
2 The Beatles
3 Frank Sinatra
4 Perry Como
5 Johnny Mathis
6 The Rolling Stones
7 Nat King Cole
8 Bing Crosby
9 Ray Charles
10 The Temptations
1979 Donna Summer
A successful year for female artists. Donna Summer led the charts over 1979.
And Barbra Streisand's long success over the 1960's and 1970's led her to be the 8th most successful overall, and the first female in the Top 10 since The Supremes.
1945 - 1979
1 Elvis Presley
2 The Beatles
3 Frank Sinatra
4 Perry Como
5 Johnny Mathis
6 The Rolling Stones

I’m surprised that Nicki being top of 2012 and Sam being top of 2014. They were big, but I didn’t think they were that big at the time.

In 2015 and especially in 2016, Drake blew away all competitors.

Ofcourse nobody is ever going to agree on a single formula or method for determine the biggest/most successful but I applaud you for the effort this took and the endeavor you made.
Obviously seems like features and/or amount of songs charted counts heavily - moreso saying that as a disclaimer to anyone trying to understand your methodology.

2023 Taylor Swift
Nothing and no one can compare with Taylor Swift in 2023. She emerged from the shadow of Drake, to reclaim the title of most successful artist of the year for a 2nd time having first claimed it in 2009. But Taylor also beat Drake's phenomenal achievement from 2016 and she become the most successful artist in a single year over the entire period of 1945 to 2023. And she beat Drake's record from 2016 by a very wide margin.
So Taylor Swift deservedly surpassed Elvis Presley, to become the 2nd most successful artist over this period, only behind Drake.
Meanwhile, Rihanna surpassed The Rolling Stones in 2023, to take 9th place overall.
1945 - 2023
1 Drake
2 Taylor Swift
3 Elvis Presley
4 The Beatles
5 Elton John
6 Frank Sinatra
7 Mariah Carey
8 Michael Jackson
9 Rihanna
10 The Rolling Stones
Jan - Jun 2024
During the first six months of 2024, Taylor Swift remains the most successful artist in the charts today. She is on track to become the only female artist to ever top the charts over three separate years. And if the second half of 2024 is as good for her as the first, then she will again become the most successful artist in any single year over the entire period 1945 to 2024, beating her own phenomenal record of 2023.
Drake is the 2nd most successful artist over 2024 to date but lags far behind Taylor Swift.
1945 - Jun 2024
All the artists in the Top Ten have charted in 2024, thanks to various christmas recordings that were still charting in Jan 2024.
Michael Jackson is doing best of the artists placed 3 to 10. If his success continues he might surpass Mariah Carey, then his solo career will be the 7th most successful of the period 1945 to 2024.
But Mariah Carey might be hard to catch at christmas time if "All I Want For Christmas Is You" returns to number 1 yet again.
