In this thread, I will be taking a look at Billboard's Mainstream Rock & Alternative charts through this progressive time capsule. Prior to the mid 1970's, rock 'n' roll had defined the landscape of popular music, but things began to change with the influence of funk, soul, and most importantly, disco. A number of radio stations across the country had begun switching to the "album rock" or AOR format, and soon enough, Billboard began monitoring the activity on these stations with the debut of Top Rock Tracks (and Top Rock Albums). Many of the tracks that have charted on here were never released as commercial singles. The beauty of these stations is that they are freeform based and allow for a wide variety of exposure to an artist's material. As punk and new wave began to mutate into new forms of alternative music, Billboard created it's Modern Rock chart in 1988. Artists like Peter Murphy, Depeche Mode, 10,000 Maniacs, R.E.M. etc. found a home on college radio, some of which would garner massive mainstream appeal in the 1990's and beyond. At first, Top Rock Tracks and Modern Rock were distinguishable by the content they played, but as time has progressed many of these artists would find success on both charts. "Modern" rock as it was called would define the "mainstream"... even if rock's presence and influence overall has increasingly diminished.Major thanks to Paul Haney, whose work at Record Research has made a lot of this possible. For those about to rock, we salute you! When Billboard created the Top Rock Tracks chart on March 21, 1981, it wasn't the only new rock chart born that day. Top Rock Albums was a short-lived rock radio chart that measured the popularity of albums based on overall performance. During the course of this chart's history, you'll find many of the classic rock staples like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and the Rolling Stones. There's also a lot of new blood with punk/new wave bands like the Cars and the Police, both which found huge success on Top Rock Albums. The only explanation that Billboard gave to this chart's demise was that "Beginning with this issue (September 15, 1984), Billboard's AOR chart contains only Top Rock Tracks, reflecting the changes in the AOR radio format over the last year and a half." From that point forward, Top Rock Tracks would the only rock based chart until the birth of Modern Rock Tracks in 1988.

A few notable things occurred in the industry that changed the game on Mainstream Rock Tracks. First of all, grunge and heavy metal backs from Seattle began dominate the market at the start of the 1990's. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and it's eventual followers added a new twist to a market carried on establish acts like Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones. Even though grunge itself seemingly vanished after Kurt Cobain's death, a more commercialized version (pro-grunge) quickly replaced it with radio friendly Matchbox Twenty, Creed and Nickelback bridging the gap again between rock and mainstream pop. Also, more record labels were interested in releasing few singles from a parent album. The blockbuster era of albums lasted roughly from 1977's Rumours to 1993's janet., and the industry was all about increasing album sales and lowering the number of singles to avoid cannabilism. Likewise, Billboard introduced Nielsen Broadcast Data System to run this chart, starting with November 23, 1991 issue. This chart has always been monitored by detections or number of spins on AOR stations. Like with the Hot 100, things began to slow down going into the turn of the new century.

In the response to the increasing popularity of college radio and the underground movement of punk, new wave, and "alternative" music, Billboard created the Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1988. Some of the artists featured range from the B-52's, R.E.M., and U2 to Nirvana, Green Day and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Many of these acts found crossover appeal on the Hot 100, while others were sanctioned to these college radio stations due to both a lack of mainstream top 40 airplay and the lack of a physical single. As with Mainstream Rock, Modern Rock switched over to the Nielsen formula by January 1994, after beginning the transition in June 1993. Noticeably longer chart runs began in the mid-late 90's and would carry forward into the new millennium. While Billboard did not like using the word "alternative" to label the chart, it would eventually be labeled as such with Radio & Records acquisition in 2009.

The new millennium gave way to a new kind of "alternative" as Linkin Park debuts on the scene with Hybrid Theory. This band, led by the late Chester Bennington, would enjoy widespread success not only on Modern Rock Tracks but also on the Hot 100 and Billboard 200. Former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl would also encounter success with his band, Foo Fighters. Veteran acts like U2, Green Day and the Red Hot Chili Peppers continued strong into the 2000's with Green Day experiencing success unparalled to anything but their major-label debut, Dookie. All in all, the new "alternative" had been "mainstream" and it infiltrated the pop market, even crossing over into Adult Contemporary and Adult Top 40 charts. Sales across the decade remained strong until the dawning of the digital era in the mid-2000's. Couple with downloads and streaming, rock would lose its edge entering the 2010's, but the music and the format itself continue to thrive despite losing the limelight.
The chart itself remains the same but it will undergo a name change on June 20, 2009, with Billboard's acquisition of Radio & Records, acquiring the name Alternative Songs. Upon the acquisition, Billboard created a brand new chart named Rock Songs, an airplay chart that combines the panels for Mainstream, Alternative and Adult Alternative (from Radio & Records) to give an overall perspective of rock radio. Just like R&B and country, the rock chart would become a "hybrid" chart on October 20, 2012, a chart compiled by overall sales, airplay and streaming data... essentially a cherry-pick of the Hot 100 itself determined by Billboard executives. Fortunately, the airplay-only continued forward as Rock Airplay, and since June 13, 2020, as Hot Rock & Alternative Airplay. Likewise, Rock Songs would turn into Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, heavily broadening its spectrum to include crossover acts like Hozier, Zach Bryan and Billie Eilish, furthering raising the question as to what is rock? For the sake of this thread, I will continue to focus on Mainstream Rock and Alternative Songs as they are the representation of these two circuits.
